SUMMARY:Yoga on Bearwallow Mountain!
DESCRIPTION:When: August 18\, 2024\, 9 am – 11 am \nMeet at: Bearwallow Mountain Trailhead \nUnplug\, unwind\, and reconnect with nature during this unique hike and outdoor yoga series on Bearwallow Mountain\, in partnership with Journey of the Microcosm. \nMonthly\, on the second to last Sunday of each month\, enjoy a one-mile hike with gentle incline (easy/moderate\, ~500’ elevation change) through the forest to the top of Bearwallow Mountain for panoramic views and an hour of yoga for all levels with certified Yoga instructor\, Kiersten Angelos\, founder of Journey of the Microcosm. Her creative instructions will be a perfect match for Bearwallow Mountain. \nPre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 12 participants. To register\, please RSVP below. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike/activity beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Bring your yoga mat\, props\, water\, and a snack. There are no facilities on site\, if needed\, please use the “facilitrees” using Leave No Trace principles. Please be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require in case of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). You will be asked to sign a waiver form. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please check the Conserving Carolina website event page to see if the event will take place. SUMMARY:Guided Nature Walk – Looking for Mushrooms with Todd Elliott!
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Todd Elliott!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 24th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nTodd Elliott’s studies in biodiversity and interrelationships in nature have taken him to remote corners of the world to explore tropical rainforests\, deserts\, temperate forests\, beaches\, and high mountains on six continents. He is particularly interested in edible and medicinal mushrooms and plants and their importance to humans. Todd is an author of the Timber Press field guide Mushrooms of the Southeast and has published academic literature on various aspects of fungal ecology and taxonomy. Todd received his undergraduate degree in interpretive natural history from Warren Wilson College (USA) and his PhD in ecology from the University of New England (Australia). He enjoys sharing his research and knowledge of the natural world through presentations\, workshops\, and consultations for many different organizations in the US and abroad. SUMMARY:Edneyville Library Speaker Series: Southern Appalachians During the Ice Age
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 27\, 2024 \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nLocation: Edneyville Library \nSpeaker: naturalist and educator\, Dan Lazar \nDuring the presentation\, Dan Lazar will discuss the animals and plants that were found in this region twenty thousand years ago.  He will also present evidence suggesting the former occurrence of now-extinct species such as Jefferson’s Ground Sloth and the American Mastodon.  The presentation will show images depicting ice age species still surviving in our Southern Mountains. \nDan Lazar served for many years as Director of Education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as Executive Director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum.  Mr. Lazar has a degree in Forest Biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse.  He has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist Certificate Program at the North Carolina Arboretum since 2005\, teaching a variety of classes including Ecology of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Geology of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Introduction to Insects\, Tree Identification\, and Meteorology.  Dan also has co-hosted “Nature News\,” a weekly radio program broadcast on WTZQ Hendersonville\, since 1993. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Edneyville Library’s calendar of events at this link. DESCRIPTION:Workday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Kudzu\, Tree of Heaven\, Butterfly Bush\, and others from the grounds. Volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling methods to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk a short distance on level ground. Tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Rosy Maple Moth by Sharon Mammoser \nDate: September 10\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Sharon Mammoser\, naturalist\, photographer\, and writer \nWhen many people think about moths\, they probably don’t consider them beautiful\, very diverse\,  or worthy of protecting. But guess what? Moths outnumber butterflies TEN to one! Worldwide there are more than 160\,000 species of moths and about 17\,500 of butterflies. Moths and their caterpillars are the foundation of the food chain\, especially appealing to songbird parents who must feed their growing chicks. The diversity is shocking\, as are the colors\, shapes and adaptations. There are moths with fake eyes\, moths with perfect camouflage hiding secret colors\, moths that mimic other insects\, moths with long tails meant to outsmart bats\, moths that sleep in flowers\, moths with long proboscises that can reach deep into the nectary of flowers\, and moths with antennae so perfect you’d swear they were feathers. There are yellow and pink moths\, delicate green moths\, and moths with intricate designs that look hand-painted. \nIn this program we get an introduction to the amazing world of moths\, including a chance to see and learn about some of our more amazing local moths. We’ll also learn about their important place in the food web and how we can make our yards and outdoor spaces more moth friendly. \nNature is what nourishes Sharon’s soul and makes her heart sing with joy. After a childhood full of time spent exploring the wild lands around her home in western New York state\, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY at New Paltz. For many years\, Sharon shared nature with people of all ages in Minnesota\, Michigan\, Rhode Island\, Colorado\, and New York. In 2008\, she thru-hiked the 2175 mile Appalachian Trail\, an event that prompted her to move to western North Carolina\, which she now calls home. This program will be rescheduled for May 2025! \nDate: September 19\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nSpeaker: Brad Nelson \nThis program will be great for all ages and introduce basic information about butterflies and some of the species common in our area with a focus on the Monarch butterfly. Keeping it fun and entertaining\, Brad will discuss the Monarchs life cycle\, different types of milkweed common in our area\, and which milkweeds are more likely to attract Monarchs. He will also provide gardening techniques that will help attract Monarchs\, describing specific types of plants that are best for the enticing them and which are better to help perpetuate the species. The presentation will also include explanation of migration routes and when to expect Monarchs in this area. This is sure to be a great program for the whole family\, so bring the kids! \nBrad has been involved with Monarch Watch\, the University of Kansas tagging program\, for the last 5 years. DESCRIPTION:Last year\, Conserving Carolina was helped the City of Brevard acquire 34 acres of beautiful forest land to expand Bracken Mountain Preserve. The goal for this land is to expand the trail system with 2-3 miles of moderate trails that will be welcoming to trail users of all ages and abilities. Now\, you can help kick off the trail building phase! \nPisgah Area SORBA is leading a volunteer trail day to assist the professional crew with Long Cane Trails. Volunteers will play a key role in making these new trails a reality! \nVolunteers will assist Long Cane Trails building the new climbing trail. SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series: Survival By Degrees - The Impact of Climate Change on Birds
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 21\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Tom Tribble\, Past President of the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter and current At-Large Director of Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter \nFor over 100 years\, Audubon had focused on making the world a better place for birds. In 2014\, National Audubon released a Birds and Climate Change Report. The report established that shrinking and shifting ranges due to the changing climate could imperil more than half of the 588 species of North America breeding birds involved in the study – within this century. This seven-year science investigation\, made possible by decades of community-science data\, sounded an alarm that made news around the world. In early October of 2019\, National Audubon released a follow-up report – Survival By Degrees – that paints an even more challenging situation for birds if the world does not take action to reduce global warming. This presentation will summarize the results of this study and discuss actions that individuals can take to help birds. \nTom Tribble served six years as President and is now an At-Large Director of Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter\, which covers Buncombe\, Henderson\, Madison and several adjacent counties in western North Carolina. Tom has been an Audubon member and avid birder for more than 45 years. DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. SUMMARY:Yoga on Bearwallow Mountain!
DESCRIPTION:When: September 22\, 2024\, 9:30 am – 11:30 am \nMeet at: Bearwallow Mountain Trailhead \nUnplug\, unwind\, and reconnect with nature during this unique hike and outdoor yoga series on Bearwallow Mountain\, in partnership with Journey of the Microcosm. \nMonthly\, on the second to last Sunday of each month\, enjoy a one-mile hike with gentle incline (easy/moderate\, ~500’ elevation change) through the forest to the top of Bearwallow Mountain for panoramic views and an hour of yoga for all levels with certified Yoga instructor\, Kiersten Angelos\, founder of Journey of the Microcosm. Her creative instructions will be a perfect match for Bearwallow Mountain. \nPre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 12 participants. To register\, please RSVP below. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike/activity beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Bring your yoga mat\, props\, water\, and a snack. There are no facilities on site\, if needed\, please use the “facilitrees” using Leave No Trace principles.
