Perched on ridges and cliffs throughout the western North Carolina mountains\, rock outcrops host unique plant communities shaped by elevation\, chemistry\, exposure\, and structure. \nIn this program\, we’ll explore where different outcrop types occur and how factors like pH\, slope\, and geology create distinct ecological worlds. You’ll learn how to tell them apart using a simple flow-chart key and discover the specialized plant species that cling\, bloom\, and thrive in these extreme environments. \nWhether you’re a hiker\, naturalist\, or plant enthusiast\, you’ll leave with a new way to “read” the rocks beneath your feet. \nGary Kauffman is trained as a botanist and ecologist\, with a master’s degree in botany and mycology. In 2025\, he retired from the National Forests in NC after 32 years of work. Gary’s job covered 1.4 million USFS acres from the mountains to the coast. He is currently on the board of the Asheville Botanical Garden and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. With some of the highest diversity of plants and wildlife anywhere in the world\, our region and its natural history is truly a story that will inform and inspire. Mr. Huffman will present a lifetime of study and discovery of the region and present how we came to be. \nRick Huffman\, American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)\, is the founder of Earth Design\, an environmental design and landscape architecture firm with more than 30 years of experience integrating ecology\, horticulture\, and landscape architecture to create resilient\, inspiring places. A nationally recognized conservation leader\, Rick founded the South Carolina Native Plant Society and continues to serve as its Advocacy Chair and Upstate Chapter President. He is the co-author of Life at the Water’s Edge\, recipient of numerous conservation and environmental education awards\, including the Governor’s Award for Environmental Awareness and the 2024 Lifetime Achievement for Conservation Award from Conservation Voters of South Carolina. In 2025\, he was elevated to Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects\, the profession’s highest national honor. Throughout his career\, Rick has been a passionate advocate for protecting native plants\, restoring natural landscapes\, and connecting people to the rich natural heritage of the Southern Appalachians. DESCRIPTION:Nature Preserve Stewards\nJoin us for our weekly Nature Preserve Stewards workday. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Fighting for Farmland - Henderson County Farmland Preservation
DESCRIPTION:Join Angela Price\, Henderson County Farmland Preservation Coordinator\, as she discusses a new agricultural conservation easement program to work in tandem with existing preservation efforts. The current efforts\, through outreach\, Voluntary Ag Districts and Enhanced Agricultural Districts\, are working to ensure that the farmland in Henderson County remains productive and in the hands of farmers. The County lost over 8\,000 acres of agricultural land between 2017-2022\, and the preservation efforts through Soil and Water are aiming at preventing the continuous bleed seen throughout North Carolina. The state of North Carolina ranks second in loss of farmland\, and first in loss of farmland to development. Henderson County’s efforts to reduce the loss of farmland are in partnership and funded through the North Carolina Department of Agriculture’s Farmland Preservation Trust Fund. \nAngela was born and raised in Columbus\, North Carolina\, and became interested in environmental conservation and agriculture in high school through the agriculture program and FFA chapter at Polk County High. She attended Appalachian State for environmental science and received her master’s in environmental and soil sciences at the University of Tennessee\, where she focused on the reduction of food insecurity in Appalachia through small-scale agricultural production and farmland preservation. Her work was centered around creating a self-sustaining Appalachian Region to uplift rural communities and create mutually beneficial partnerships with nearby urban centers. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and The Local Table curated by Stump Farms. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Highway 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. If you enjoy gardening (or the idea of gardening)\, and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. DESCRIPTION:Where: Raven Cliff Falls \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.9–miles\, moderate; trail type-out and back \nElevation gain: 738′ \nApproximately 40 minute drive \n**There is a State Park trail access fee of $3 per adult\, but if you’re a SC senior\, the fee if $1.50. PLEASE BRING CASH IN THE EXACT AMOUNT for yourself on the day of the hike. \nJoin us for a scenic hike to Raven Cliff Falls\, one of the Upstate’s most spectacular waterfalls! We’ll wind through a beautiful forest in the Matthews Creek watershed\, enjoying lush vegetation\, mountain views\, and the sights and sounds of the surrounding forest before reaching a viewing platform to see the falls. Raven Cliff Falls plunges an estimated 420 feet from Raven Cliff Mountain along the Blue Ridge Escarpment\, where the Blue Ridge Mountains drop dramatically toward the Piedmont below. Named for the ravens that nest in the high cliffs around the falls\, Raven Cliff Falls is one of South Carolina’s most scenic waterfalls! Come explore this popular trail and experience the beauty of the Southern Appalachians along the way! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Highway 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! No green thumb? We welcome your enthusiasm and are happy to share our knowledge with you. If you enjoy gardening (or the idea of gardening)\, and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main Street access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25 just before the bridge over Mud Creek). DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants and gardening?  Join us Thursdays from 9 am –  11am at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler in October we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:When: Friday\, October 2nd\, from 10am-12pm \n  \nWhere to Meet: Oklawaha Greenway Balfour Access (near Berkeley Ball Park at 69 Balfour Rd\, Hendersonville\, NC 28792) \n  \nFrom Asheville Hwy\, turn onto Berkely Rd. Where the road splits\, take the first left onto Balfour Rd. You will pass Berkeley Ball Park on the left\, and a Kimberly Clark truck entrance on the right. After you pass the truck entrance\, turn right and arrive at the parking lot. Look for a Conserving Carolina yard sign to guide you to the parking area! \n  \nDescription: The Oklawaha Greenway provides a green recreational space for the City of Hendersonville and we want to make sure it stays clear of litter! We will clean up litter along Conserving Carolina’s two-mile Adopt-a-Greenway section (Berkely Ball Park to N. Main crossing). Volunteers must be able to walk moderate distances (~3-miles) and may need to bend over to pick up trash. SUMMARY:Nature Preserve Stewards - Pleasant Grove/Etowah
DESCRIPTION:Nature Preserve Stewards\nJoin us for our weekly Nature Preserve Stewards workday. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. An email with details of the workday\, including meeting place\, will be sent to all who have registered by Friday of the preceding week.\nIn the case of a month with five Wednesdays\, we will not have a formal workday.  Volunteers are encouraged to visit and monitor any of the sites we’ve worked in together in the past.  Please update our projects in iNaturalist (contact Torry@conservingcarolina.org for details) with any interesting observations.  You can log your time spent by emailing mary@conservingcarolina.org.\n\n\n\nWhat to expect:\nA typical day might include: \n\nPulling weeds\nErosion control\nPlanting and tending trees and other plants\nMaking and recording scientific observations\nCreating habitat for all kinds of animals\nMaintaining artificial habitats (bird and bat boxes\, etc.)\nOther tasks as conditions warrant.\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\nAppropriate clothing for four hours in nature: close-toed shoes\, long pants\, and shirt sleeves.
