DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. This engaging talk offers a comprehensive overview of these remarkable creatures\, exploring their unique life cycle\, habitat preferences\, and the factors contributing to their alarming decline. \nJoin us on a journey through the rivers and streams that serve as the home for these hidden gems. Discover the intricate relationship between freshwater mussels and their environment\, as we explore their vital role in maintaining water quality and stream bed stability. Gain insight into the fascinating reproductive strategies and the complex interactions that shape their existence. \nHowever\, this talk also sheds light on the challenges faced by freshwater mussels. Learn about the various factors that have led to their decline\, including habitat degradation\, pollution\, and changes in river flow patterns. Explore the interconnectedness of these factors and their impact on the delicate balance of freshwater ecosystems. \nBy the end of this talk\, you will develop a deeper appreciation for the significance of freshwater mussels and the urgent need for their conservation. Discover how researchers and conservationists are coming together to protect these imperiled species\, implementing innovative strategies to restore their habitats and raise awareness about their importance. \n  \nHans\, a freshwater mussel enthusiast\, developed a passion for these aquatic creatures during his internship with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) while completing his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He gained invaluable expertise in captive propagation techniques and identifying diverse mussel species across the aquatic habitats of Western North Carolina. \nFurthering his education at Appalachian State University\, Hans earned his master’s degree and conducted his thesis research comparing freshwater mussel taxonomic relationships using a combination of DNA analysis\, geographic range data\, and shell morphology. This academic pursuit deepened his understanding of these fascinating organisms. \nFollowing his academic journey\, Hans dedicated three years to the NCWRC\, focusing on the conservation of freshwater mussels through the preservation of both wild and captive populations. DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: The Future of the Toilet: The Good\, the Bad\, and the Ugly
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive conversation about what happens when we flush and possibilities for a different future in our bathrooms. \nCome learn about possibilities for change in our bathrooms and alternatives that have been experienced and considered from experts in their field! Participants will learn about some innovative ways people around the country are thinking about the stuff our bodies make (through images\, videos\, and conversations)\, and\, if they are so moved\, participants can share their experiences of how people talk about this potentially sensitive topic. FlushED is a National Science Foundation-funded team based in Winston Salem and Boston. \nBetsy Towns a member of an art\, science\, and communications-design team– FlushED\, working to discover ways to raise curiosity and interest in changes to wastewater practices that may reach our bathrooms in the coming decades.  Betsy is a professor of Art History and Creative Practice at University of North Carolina School of the Arts\, and a ceramic sculptor whose work centers on the relationship between art\, science\, and literature. Betsy works as a principal investigator on a US National Science Foundation grant to communicate alternative possibilities for managing the stuff our bodies make. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. Whether you’re a landowner or an environmental enthusiast\, you’ll learn about what you can do to preserve hemlocks on your property and beyond. \nOlivia Hall is the Communications and Educational Outreach Manager for HRI. She graduated with her Masters in Biology in May of 2023 from Northern Michigan University and moved to the Asheville area in July of the same year. Being from the north country\, she holds a particular affinity for conifers\, and she loves the ecological value and beauty they hold. \nAyla Busch is an AmeriCorps Project Conserve member serving as Stewardship and Conservation Education Associate with Hemlock Restoration Initiative. She grew up in upstate New York\, and attended University of North Carolina Wilmington\, where she learned that she loved connecting with new people through environmental outreach. Come learn more about the biology of this unique species\, its mountain habitat\, and how the NC Wildlife Resources Commission goes about researching and managing the Spotted Skunk in our state. \nCaitlin Brett is the state Furbearer Biologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission\, and represents a wide variety of species in the state including otters\, opossums\, muskrats\, foxes\, bobcats\, beavers\, coyotes\, weasels\, and skunks. DESCRIPTION:Date: September 23\, 2025 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Evangaline LaMore \nThe Eastern Bluebird\, a cavity nester that was once widespread throughout North America\, experienced a notable decrease in its population during the early 20th century. This decline was largely attributed to habitat loss caused by the invasion of non-native species such as European Starlings and House Sparrows\, which competed fiercely for nesting locations. However\, due to conservation initiatives\, such as the extensive use of nest boxes\, their numbers have significantly recovered in recent decades\, highlighting a successful example of human efforts in bird conservation. The North American Bluebird Society\, established in 1978\, was instrumental in protect bluebird populations. During this presentation\, you will learn about the history of the Eastern Bluebird in North America and the role of the North American Bluebird Society and its primary goal\, to protect bluebird populations through education\, research\, and promoting the installation of bluebird nest boxes. \nEvangeline LaMore\, Songbird rehabilitator for over 20 years\, and Polk County coordinator for The North Carolina Bluebird Society for 4 years. She started her journey with songbirds by volunteering at Earthplace Nature Center\, in Westport\, CT\, where she learned about wildlife rehabilitation. In 2005\, Evangeline moved to N.C. and pursued a Federal and State permit to rehabilitate Migratory Songbirds at her home. In 2022\, she established a bluebird trail at Harmon Field and has worked with many groups and individuals to erect bluebird boxes throughout the regoin.

DESCRIPTION:Where: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 5.5–miles\, moderately strenuous; trail type-lollipop \nElevation gain: 928′ \nApproximately 30-minute drive \nThe 5.5-mile hike is 2.75-miles out and 2.75-miles back and it starts out as relatively easy\, winding through new growth forest and along several streams\, gradually becoming moderately strenuous as the trail ascends Squirrel Mountain through a rich hardwood forest with beautiful rock outcroppings. After reaching the ridge top\, the trail descends Squirrel Mountain through a lush cove forest to the South Pacolet River\, at the base of Chestnut Ridge. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, September 5\, 2025.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. DESCRIPTION:Brackenfest 3.0 is a fundraising event to expand Bracken Preserve – Brevard’s own trail system which directly links to the Pisgah National Forest. With a current 432 acres and nine miles of trail – we are on our way to adding the next 3-4 miles (with 1-2 miles planned for completion within 2025) of beginner and intermediate trails and need your help!  \nBrackenfest is a Time Trial event – the winners achieving the most laps in a three hour timeline – and the bragging rights that the winners deserve. This year the event is open to Trail Runners as well!  \nThanks to generous donations – 100% of the proceeds from the event go to the new Bracken Trails  \nPrizes for the winners in all categories – Adult Men and Women\, Student Men and Women\, and Youth. Award Ceremony will be at 1:00PM  \nLunch for participants and volunteers is included in registration and location will be announced within this week. If you would like your friends or family to join you – there is a $15.00 additional cost. (Lunch and non-alcoholic beverages included). DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 1pm –  3pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over 2 acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25) just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be  a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nThe best way to find the access area is to put N. Main Automotive\, Hendersonville in your GPS\, and that will get you almost there. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Blue Ridge Rising
DESCRIPTION:Join George Ivy\, Director of Blue Ridge Rising\, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation’s initiative to unite and serve the gateway communities of the Parkway’s 29 counties in Virginia and North Carolina. While the Blue Ridge Rising Action Plan includes dozens of community-led strategies to enhance tourism and economic development\, natural resource protection emerged as a key component of this work. Join us to learn more about Blue Ridge Rising\, with a particular emphasis on viewshed protection\, dark skies\, and related strategies\, and how they can benefit our local environment\, economy\, and communities. \nGeorge Ivey serves as the Director of Blue Ridge Rising\, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation’s initiative to unite and serve the gateway communities of the Parkway’s 29 counties in Virginia and North Carolina. George’s career includes positions with Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park\, The Nature Conservancy\, and the North Carolina Arboretum\, as well as eight years as a consultant. George earned a political science degree at Duke University and a master’s degree in parks\, recreation\, and tourism from N.C. State University. George lives in Flat Rock\, North Carolina\, with his wife and two children. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. You don’t have to drink at Green Drinks\, just come and listen. Trailside Brewing Co. offers beer\, wine\, cider\, prosecco and non-alcoholic beverages. SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Daniel Ridge loop\, Pisgah National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Where: Daniel Ridge loop\, Pisgah National Forest \nMeet: Lowe’s Home Improvement\, 119 Ecusta Rd\, Brevard\, NC 28712\, at 9:00 a.m. (in spaces farthest from the building entrance) \nDistance and difficulty: 4.5 miles\, moderate; trail type – loop \nElevation gain: 813′ \nApproximately 20 minute drive \nHikers will head to Pisgah National Forest\, just past the old Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and Fish Hatchery. The Daniel Ridge Trail begins by following the Davidson River\, then the trail leaves the river and follows Lanning Branch and ascends the ridge.  The reward for this ascent is beautiful views of Pilot Mountain.  After descending the opposite side of the ridge\, hikers will be led to the base of a 90-foot waterfall\, Toms Spring Falls. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, September 19\, 2025.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ to see if the hike will take place. Please also remember to bring any medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). Hike leaders will carry a first aid kit; however\, it may not contain specific medication for your individual needs. \nBefore each hike\, you will be asked to sign a waiver form. For your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. This schedule is subject to change.
