Look for a Conserving Carolina sign to guide you to the parking area. \n\nThe Oklawaha Greenway provides a green recreational space for the City of Hendersonville and we want to make sure it stays clear of litter! We will clean up litter along Conserving Carolina’s two-mile Adopt-a-Greenway section from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances (~3-miles) and may need to bend over to pick up trash. All tools and gloves will be provided. \nWhat to Wear:\nWork pants\, long sleeves; dress for the weather \nClose-toed shoes \nWhat to Bring:\nWater\, snacks. \nWork gloves (if you have a personal pair) \nPlease RSVP below.

SUMMARY:Everett Rd. Transylvania County Clean-up with MountainTrue & Conserving Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Come join the French Broad Riverkeeper team and Conserving Carolina as we clean up the trash left behind by Hurricane Helene in Transylvania County. We will be removing trash and debris along the riparian areas upstream and downstream. Please note this will be a land-based clean up. \nPlease wear long sleeves\, long pants\, work boots\, rubber boots and/or waders. (Expect to get dirty!) We will have protective equipment available (gloves\, glasses)\, but feel free to bring your own as well. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring tools (loppers\, saws\, shovels\, ladders\, etc.) to help dislodge and collect garbage. \nPlease bring water and snacks and any food or drinks that you need. \nVolunteer Safety Reminder: Always Wear Your PPE During Cleanups!\nAs more volunteers participate in river clean-ups and other recovery activities\, many will be coming into contact with mud\, sludge\, sediment\, and dust left behind by the storm. These materials may contain higher levels of pollutants and contaminants\, so it’s important to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself. \nTo work safely\, we recommend using the following personal protective equipment (PPE): \n     ✔️Rubber boots that can be easily cleaned to prevent cross-contamination. \n     ✔️Rubber gloves to protect your hands from direct contact with contaminated materials. \n     ✔️N95 masks (or better) to reduce inhalation of harmful dust and particles. \n     ✔️Long sleeves to protect your arms from direct contact with potentially harmful substances. \n     ✔️Waterproof bandages to cover any cuts or abrasions\, reducing the risk of infection. \n     ✔️Safety glasses or goggles to shield your eyes from mud particles and dust. \nAfter your clean-up activities\, be sure to shower as soon as possible to remove any remaining contaminants from your skin and clothing. Given the lack of running water in many areas\, you may want to arrange your shower plans before signing up for a clean-up. It’s also a good idea to make sure you are up to date on your tetanus shot.  \nBy following these guidelines\, you can help ensure your safety while helping our community recover. \n  \nPre-registration is required. Carrie Blair\, founder of Tree Lovers School\, will discuss ways to help you identify trees by their various characteristics\, their habitats\, branch patterns\, leaves\, flowers\, seeds\, thorns\, buds\, and leaf scars. She’ll also teach some of the terms you should know when learning about and discussing trees. \nCarrie Blair has passionately studied the plants of the mid-Atlantic for over four decades. She served as the president of the Virginia Native Plant Society\, Piedmont Chapter and she was a board member for 25 years. She has led hundreds of plant walks for Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy\, she was a docent of the State Arboretum of Virginia\, a Virginia and North Carolina Master Gardener\, a Master Naturalist\, a member of the North Carolina Native Plant Society – Land of the Sky\, she belongs to the Western Carolina Botanical Club\, and the Georgia Botanical Society. \nThrough her work with Tree Lovers School\, Carrie provides botany education and landscape assessments\, as well as custom classes\, plant walks\, and field trips for schools and other groups. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Restoring Natural Floodplains - Building Resilience for Communities and Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Restoring natural floodplains offers transformative benefits for both communities and ecosystems. Conserving Carolina’s Natural Resources Director\, David Lee\, will highlight Conserving Carolina’s innovative floodplain restoration projects along the French Broad River\, focusing on their important role in mitigating flood risks\, improving biodiversity\, and enhancing water quality. Using real-world examples\, such as the Pleasant Grove and Kings Bridge restorations\, we’ll explore strategies to restore natural functions to floodplains and build resilience against extreme weather events like Tropical Storm Helene. Attendees will gain insights into effective restoration techniques\, the power of community partnerships\, and the importance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge. Join us to learn how these projects serve as a model for creating thriving\, sustainable landscapes that support both people and nature. \nDavid lived most of his life in Florida\, but he spent many vacations camping\, hiking\, and enjoying nature in the southern Appalachians. These experiences instilled in him a sense of appreciation for the environment that led to a strong commitment to conserve it. After earning a BS in Environmental Science from the University of West Florida\, David relocated to Asheville where he worked as a Bog Steward for The Nature Conservancy. He then served two consecutive terms with AmeriCorps Project Conserve with Conserving Carolina’s Weed Action Coalition of the Hickory Nut Gorge (WAC-HNG) where he preserved the natural habitats and scenic beauty of the Gorge through management of non-native invasive plants. He joined the staff in 2014 where he works to keep our protected lands healthy\, which means a good deal of non-native\, invasive species management. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. You don’t have to drink at Green Drinks\, just come and listen. Trailside Brewing Co. offers beer\, wine\, cider\, prosecco and non-alcoholic beverages. DESCRIPTION:Date: February 15\, 2025 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nPresentation Location: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Todd Elliott\, naturalist\, ecologist\, mycologist\, and author \nCome learn about edible mushrooms in the Southeast! This talk will cover the basics of mushroom ecology and identification and will focus on some of the best edible species that can be foraged in our area. \nTodd Elliott’s studies in biodiversity and interrelationships in nature have taken him to remote corners of the world to explore tropical rainforests\, deserts\, temperate forests\, beaches\, and high mountains on six continents. He is particularly interested in edible and medicinal mushrooms and plants and their importance to humans. Todd is an author of the Timber Press field guide Mushrooms of the Southeast and has published academic literature on various aspects of fungal ecology and taxonomy. Todd received his undergraduate degree in interpretive natural history from Warren Wilson College (USA) and his PhD in ecology from the University of New England (Australia). He enjoys sharing his research and knowledge of the natural world through presentations\, workshops\, and consultations for many different organizations in the US and abroad. This presentation will address many of the important events that occurred during that period and several advancements in railroading that came from operation on the Grade. \nDavid O’Brien moved across the valley from Melrose (bottom of the Grade) 16 years ago. He became active in the Saluda Historic Depot and Museum in 2017 as a docent. DESCRIPTION:Join the Rock Crushers on Conserving Carolina trails in the Hickory Nut Gorge in trail building and maintenance including digging trail tread/surface\, removing vegetation\, moving rocks\, swinging sharp tools\, having fun while working hard. \nSeeking consistent weekly volunteers. \nIf interested in joining the Trail Crew\, email mary@conservingcarolina.org or call 828-697-5777 ext. 211 to check for availability. \nRSVP Required\nRSVP’s are required to to help staff adequately plan for safety precautions and to maintain group sizes less than 10 and so we can provide meet up information.

SUMMARY:Kudzu Warriors
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. GPS points (35.22458\, -82.27428) \nWe will supply tools and gloves\, but please bring water and a snack for yourself\, dress appropriately and bring your own work gloves if you’d like. \nTo RSVP or for more information email pam@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: Owls of the Carolinas
DESCRIPTION:Barred Owl by Sara Jackson \nDate: March 11\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Saluda Library \nSpeaker: Pam Torlina\, Community Engagement Director \nTorlina’s presentation will focus on the several species of owls found in the Carolinas and highlight the special characteristics that make them successful predators of the night. \nDuring the presentation\, participants will get an up-close look at feathers\, talons\, and owl specimens in order to gain a better understanding of their unique characteristics (it is illegal to possess any part of a migratory bird without the proper permitting\, and Conserving Carolina is permitted by the federal government to collect and possess bird specimens to be used for educational purposes). \nTorlina\, a biologist\, has been with the Conservancy for 18 years.  She has over 25 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator.  She has worked with the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation-Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve\, in Haliburton\, Ontario\, Canada\, where she has performed annual migratory and breeding bird surveys\, surveys on nocturnal owls\, hawks and woodpeckers\, presented educational programs on birds for adults and children\, conducted nest searches and nest record data in the U.S. and Canada\, participated in data collection for the most recent Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas\, she volunteered with a licensed bird bander in the past\, and she is a co-regional coordinator for the current North Carolina Bird Atlas. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
