SUMMARY:A Nighttime Walk to Celebrate the Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2024 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area\, first/lower parking lot \nJoin us to celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – with a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nStarting from the lower/first parking lot\, participants will be asked to enjoy a silent walk in the darkness\, without the aid of flashlights. (Red flashlights are permitted\, but only if needed/when necessary.) The stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. Once arriving at the falls\, in the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining (white light) flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are asked to: \n\nbring (white light) flashlights to help illuminate the waterfall when we arrive\nonly us red flashlights along the trail and as needed – we’d like to invite you to use your senses and realize how well you can see and enjoy the wilderness in the dark!\nwalk in silence to the waterfall\nbring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the lower/first parking lot\n\nThe event will be cancelled in case of heavy rain\, snow\, or ice. Pre-registration is required\, please RSVP below.  There is no charge for this event. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the website event will be updated by 12 p.m. on the day of the walk if cancellation is necessary. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. Walkers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring water and a snack for themselves. DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. DESCRIPTION:Date: January 18\, 2025 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Liz Hillard\, Wildlands Network’s senior wildlife biologist for the Appalachian region \nThis presentation will highlight the importance of habitat connectivity in Western North Carolina/the Southern Appalachians\, highlighting local efforts to provide wildlife safe passage across our roadways\, and discuss the challenges (and opportunities) in building back better\, with wildlife in mind\, after Hurricane Helene. \nLiz Hillard is Wildlands Network’s senior wildlife biologist for the Appalachian region and based in Asheville. DESCRIPTION:Date: January 23\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Etowah Library \nSpeaker: Pam Torlina\, Community Engagement Director for Conserving Carolina \nOften we tend to think that there isn’t much to discover in nature during the dormant months of winter\, but many species of wildlife are still active and on the move\, looking for food and going from place to place. Join us to learn how to see and identify many of the tracks and signs that animals leave behind when we’re not there to see them. \nTorlina\, a biologist\, has been with the Conservancy for 18 years. She has over 25 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator. She has worked with the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation-Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve\, in Haliburton\, Ontario\, Canada\, where she has performed annual migratory and breeding bird surveys\, surveys on nocturnal owls\, hawks and woodpeckers\, presented educational programs on birds for adults and children\, conducted nest searches and nest record data in the U.S. and Canada\, she has volunteered with a licensed bird bander\, and she has participated in data collection for the most recent Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas and is currently a co-coordinator for the North Carolina Bird Atlas\, region 9. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Etowah Library’s calendar of events at this link.  \n \nThe Etowah Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

We will clean up litter along Conserving Carolina’s two-mile Adopt-a-Greenway section from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances (~3-miles) and may need to bend over to pick up trash. SUMMARY:Everett Rd. Transylvania County Clean-up with MountainTrue & Conserving Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Come join the French Broad Riverkeeper team and Conserving Carolina as we clean up the trash left behind by Hurricane Helene in Transylvania County. We will be removing trash and debris along the riparian areas upstream and downstream. Please note this will be a land-based clean up. \nPlease wear long sleeves\, long pants\, work boots\, rubber boots and/or waders. (Expect to get dirty!) We will have protective equipment available (gloves\, glasses)\, but feel free to bring your own as well. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring tools (loppers\, saws\, shovels\, ladders\, etc.) to help dislodge and collect garbage. \nPlease bring water and snacks and any food or drinks that you need. \nVolunteer Safety Reminder: Always Wear Your PPE During Cleanups!\nAs more volunteers participate in river clean-ups and other recovery activities\, many will be coming into contact with mud\, sludge\, sediment\, and dust left behind by the storm. These materials may contain higher levels of pollutants and contaminants\, so it’s important to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself. \nTo work safely\, we recommend using the following personal protective equipment (PPE): \n     ✔️Rubber boots that can be easily cleaned to prevent cross-contamination. \n     ✔️Rubber gloves to protect your hands from direct contact with contaminated materials. \n     ✔️N95 masks (or better) to reduce inhalation of harmful dust and particles. \n     ✔️Long sleeves to protect your arms from direct contact with potentially harmful substances. \n     ✔️Waterproof bandages to cover any cuts or abrasions\, reducing the risk of infection. \n     ✔️Safety glasses or goggles to shield your eyes from mud particles and dust. \nAfter your clean-up activities\, be sure to shower as soon as possible to remove any remaining contaminants from your skin and clothing. Given the lack of running water in many areas\, you may want to arrange your shower plans before signing up for a clean-up. It’s also a good idea to make sure you are up to date on your tetanus shot.  \nBy following these guidelines\, you can help ensure your safety while helping our community recover. \n  \nPre-registration is required. Carrie Blair\, founder of Tree Lovers School\, will discuss ways to help you identify trees by their various characteristics\, their habitats\, branch patterns\, leaves\, flowers\, seeds\, thorns\, buds\, and leaf scars. She’ll also teach some of the terms you should know when learning about and discussing trees. \nCarrie Blair has passionately studied the plants of the mid-Atlantic for over four decades. She served as the president of the Virginia Native Plant Society\, Piedmont Chapter and she was a board member for 25 years. She has led hundreds of plant walks for Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy\, she was a docent of the State Arboretum of Virginia\, a Virginia and North Carolina Master Gardener\, a Master Naturalist\, a member of the North Carolina Native Plant Society – Land of the Sky\, she belongs to the Western Carolina Botanical Club\, and the Georgia Botanical Society. \nThrough her work with Tree Lovers School\, Carrie provides botany education and landscape assessments\, as well as custom classes\, plant walks\, and field trips for schools and other groups.
