SUMMARY:Speaker Series at Laughing Waters Retreat: Forest Lifeways: Food\, Medicine and More
DESCRIPTION:Date: October 5\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat – in the orchard \nSpeaker: Sara Jackson of Bat Cave Designs \nThis Forest Lifeways discussion explores the myriad lifeforms and lifeways of the forest from a naturalist’s perspective. From fungi to flora to fauna\, we will first take a bird’s eye view of the intricate web of forest life. In the second part\, we will delve into the ways that people have lived with\, stewarded and been part of these very special places from early on\, up to the present day. Shelter\, water\, food\, medicine\, materials\, and deep connection are all ways that humans always have and continue to benefit from one of the greatest strongholds of life on this earth: our incredible forests. \nSara lives among three creeks\, deep in the forest of Bat Cave\, NC. As a student of nature\, she is profoundly grateful to gain and offer her understanding as a naturalist\, educator and photographer. Along with family life in the forest and raising a future steward\, she is a conservationist\, advocate and resource creator who assists nonprofits\, groups and programs in the areas of conservation\, forest farming\, education and more. Her favorite topics are forest botanicals\, ecology\, foraging\, ethnobotany and traditional medicines. \nGuests will park in the orchard at Laughing Waters Retreat\, accessed from the address below\, and walk up a little hill and gravel driveway to the pavilion.  If anyone has mobility challenges\, there is the opportunity to be dropped off closer to the pavilion. \n \nPrograms at Laughing Waters Retreat Center are made possible thanks to our partnership with Laughing Waters Retreat Center. For more information about Laughing Waters Retreat Center\, visit laughingwatersnc.com. \nFor more information contact Pam Torlina at pam@conservingcarolina.org. \n

SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Conserving Carolina’s Trails - Conservation and Recreation

Conserving Carolina has built and maintains ~39 miles of trail in the region\, showcasing many acres on\, and scenic views from\, protected land. He attended Denison University in Ohio where he earned a B.A. in environmental studies with a minor in geoscience. Knowing he wanted to return to North Carolina after graduation\, he served two terms with AmeriCorps Project Conserve as Conserving Carolina’s Habitat Restoration and Volunteer Coordinator. SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Moonshine Falls
DESCRIPTION:Where: Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC \nTime: 8:30 a.m. \nTrail info.: 5.5 miles\, moderate; trail type – out and back \nElevation gain: 823′ \nDrive time: approximately 35 minutes \nJoin us for an approximately 5.5-mile\, moderate\, out and back hike in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. Leaving from Asbury Hills Camp and Retreat Center in Cleveland\, South Carolina\, the trail winds through a maturing forest and offers great winter views of Table Rock.  At one point\, hikers will have to cross Matthews Creek using a cable crossing (one cable for your feet and one cable for your hands).  This is the easiest way to cross the creek\, though rock hopping and wadding may be possible.  The cable crossing may test your courage but it will offer a great sense of accomplishment! \nApproaching the waterfall\, hikers will arrive near the top of the falls and take a short\, fairly steep descent to a cave behind the falls.  This offers a unique view of the waterfall.  There will also be an opportunity to hike down to the base of the falls to take in the full splendor of this hidden gem. \nThe waterfall was named for the illegal moonshining activity that occurred in the ‘cave’ behind the falls\, and old moonshining barrels still remain behind the falls.  This waterfall plunges like a veil 40 feet over a dark granite cliff\, strikes a ledge\, turns 90 degrees and plunges into a pool. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, September 20\, 2024.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. SUMMARY:Brevard Speaker Series: Masters of the Night - Bats
DESCRIPTION:Date: October 28\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Transylvania County Public Library\, Rogow Room \nSpeaker: Sharon Mammoser\, naturalist\, photographer\, and writer \nBats are amazingly diverse\, and incredibly important to a healthy ecosystem. One average size bat can eat up to 1000 mosquito-sized insects in ONE HOUR and save farmers all over the world millions of dollars in pest control. Yet so many people have a negative opinion of this gentle animal. My friend\, and bat biologist and photographer\, Merlin Tuttle has dedicated his life to studying bats and educating people around the world about their value. With the help of some of his incredible photos\, this program will introduce you to the fascinating world of bats. How many bat species are there? How many live in NC? How do they find their prey in pitch darkness? Do they spread rabies and other diseases? Why would you want to welcome bats into your yards? These and many more questions will be answered as we discover the truth about these masters of the night. \nAfter a childhood full of time spent exploring the wild lands around her house in western New York state\, Sharon earned her Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY at New Paltz. For the next 12 years she shared nature with people of all ages in Minnesota\, Michigan\, Rhode Island\, Colorado and New York. After thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail\, she moved to western North Carolina. Through photography\, writing\, and educational programs\, she aims to educate people about their outdoor neighbors and encourage actions that will help the natural world thrive. Sharon states\, “Nature is my church. It is what nourishes my soul and makes my heart sing with joy.” \n \nThe Brevard Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the NC Cooperative Extension\, Transylvania County Center. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series - Freshwater Mussels of the Western Carolinas
DESCRIPTION:Date: November 12\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Hans Lohmeyer\, freshwater ecologist and Conserving Carolina Stewardship Coordinator \nDive into the captivating world of freshwater mussels found in the mountain and foothill regions of the Carolinas\, as we unravel their biology\, ecology\, and pressing conservation concerns. This engaging talk offers a comprehensive overview of these remarkable creatures\, exploring their unique life cycle\, habitat preferences\, and the factors contributing to their alarming decline. \nJoin us on a journey through the rivers and streams that serve as the home for these hidden gems. Discover the intricate relationship between freshwater mussels and their environment\, as we explore their vital role in maintaining water quality and stream bed stability. Gain insight into the fascinating reproductive strategies and the complex interactions that shape their existence. \nHowever\, this talk also sheds light on the challenges faced by freshwater mussels. Learn about the various factors that have led to their decline\, including habitat degradation\, pollution\, and changes in river flow patterns. Explore the interconnectedness of these factors and their impact on the delicate balance of freshwater ecosystems. \nBy the end of this talk\, you will develop a deeper appreciation for the significance of freshwater mussels and the urgent need for their conservation. Discover how researchers and conservationists are coming together to protect these imperiled species\, implementing innovative strategies to restore their habitats and raise awareness about their importance. \n  \nHans\, a freshwater mussel enthusiast\, developed a passion for these aquatic creatures during his internship with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) while completing his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He gained invaluable expertise in captive propagation techniques and identifying diverse mussel species across the aquatic habitats of Western North Carolina. \nFurthering his education at Appalachian State University\, Hans earned his master’s degree and conducted his thesis research comparing freshwater mussel taxonomic relationships using a combination of DNA analysis\, geographic range data\, and shell morphology. This academic pursuit deepened his understanding of these fascinating organisms. \nFollowing his academic journey\, Hans dedicated three years to the NCWRC\, focusing on the conservation of freshwater mussels through the preservation of both wild and captive populations. Recently\, he has taken on the role of Stewardship Coordinator at Conserving Carolina\, collaborating with private landowners to promote conservation easements. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems and a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information. \n\n\n\n\n Add to calendar
