SUMMARY:French Broad River Series: LEARN! – Conserving Carolina's French Broad River Restoration Projects
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 6\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Transylvania County Public Library \nSpeaker: Lia Waldrum\, Indigenous Partnership and Restoration Coordinator \nConserving Carolina and the N.C. Cooperative Extension\, Transylvania County Center are offering a series of lectures\, April – July\, to better acquaint the public with the French Broad River\, considered one of the oldest rivers in the world. \nConserving Carolina has completed several restoration projects along the French Broad River and it’s tributaries. To date restoring nearly 50 acres of wetlands\, 125 acres of floodplain\, nearly 23 acres of native pollinator habitat\, and nearly 5 miles of streams. These restoration sites have returned abandoned agricultural land and a failed golf course development back to more natural floodplains designed to handle periods of high water\, created wetlands\, and restored native vegetation and habitat that supports a variety of species\, both terrestrial and aquatic. \nIn addition\, Conserving Carolina has been directly collaborating with Cherokee artisans who have harvested rivercane from some of these sites for making traditional baskets and clay for making traditional pottery. Cherokee artisans are also helping to develop planting plans on upcoming restoration projects along the French Broad River. These plans will prioritize plants of cultural significance to the Cherokee\, such as white oak\, rivercane\, and yellowroot for their future harvest and sustainable use. \nCome learn about these exciting projects and what the Conservancy has planned for 2024 – 2026! \n  \n    \nThe French Broad River Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the NC Cooperative Extension\, Transylvania County Center and the Transylvania County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Using genetics to aid recovery of the federally endangered Bunched Arrowhead
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 14\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Ashley Morris\, Professor and Curator of the Herbarium in the Department of Biology at Furman University \nBunched Arrowhead (Sagittaria fasciculata)\, is found only in small isolated pockets in Henderson County\, North Carolina and Greenville County\, South Carolina. The seepage habitat in which it grows is extremely threatened. The remaining populations of this plant and the places where it grows are vulnerable to residential and industrial development\, conversion of land to pasture\, and non-native and invasive species. Join us to learn about the approach that the lab at Furman University has taken to understand the relative importance of sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction in the federally endangered plant\, Bunched Arrowhead\, and the implications that research findings have for species recovery. \nThis program will also give an update on Oconee Bells (Shortia galacifolia)\, a rare flower of the southern Appalachians found only in a few locations in the mountains of North Carolina\, South Carolina and Georgia and first discovered by French botanist\, André Michaux\, in 1788. (Check out this link to the June Landrum Library Speaker Series on this topic.) \nAshley is the Professor and Curator of the Herbarium in the Department of Biology at Furman University. She has been at the University since 2019\, after moving from Middle Tennessee. She’s been working on rare plant population genetics for over 20 years and teaches courses in Economic Botany\, Field Botany\, Forest Ecology\, Population Genetics & Evolution\, and Ecology and Natural Resources Management of the Smokies. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series: Plastic Pollution Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 18\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Robin Edgar\, educator \nRobin Edgar has started a new community organization called Generations Against Single-use Plastic (G.A.S.P) in Polk County. Their mission is to reduce plastic pollution by providing research and tools for long-term reduction of plastics in our environment. With over 30 years of experience teaching workshops\, Edgar will speak about plastic pollution and its effects on plant and animal life; the myths about current recycling programs; and how to make a difference in our community with solutions to tackle single-use plastic pollution\, one bottle at a time. \nShocking Facts About Plastic Pollution \n\nAbout 51 trillion pieces of micro plastic are currently in the oceans.\nHumans consume between 39\,000 and 52\,000 micro plastic particles each year.\nPlastic waste kills up to one million seabirds and 100\,000 sea mammals every year\, according to the United Nations.\nTwo million plastic bags are used every minute\, worldwide. The average amount of time a plastic bag is used is only 12 minutes.\nNearly a million beverages in plastic bottles are sold every minute worldwide.\n\n \nThe Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Preserve. \n*Walnut Creek Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Writing in Nature Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. We will begin with mindfulness meditation and some “forest bathing” with “texture gathering.”- Mattie Decker \nJournals and supplies will be provided\, however you may wish to bring your own. \nRegistration is limited to 12 participants. \nDonations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. A donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. Donations of $35 or more will include Conserving Carolina membership benefits. \n*Transfiguration Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \nDONATE HERE \nLEARN MORE ABOUT FOREST BATHING \nRSVP below.\nRegistration will close on May 23rd at noon. \nPlease reach out to drmattie.decker@gmail.com with any additional questions or concerns!

Join Steve Pettis\, Henderson County Extension Agent for NC State University\, to learn about pollinating insects and how to attract them to your yard! Pollinating insects such as native bees\, wasps\, beetles and flies are critical to native plant reproduction and to our food supply but these workhorses of the insect world are under threat from land use changes\, pesticides and habitat loss. The great news is that you can make a difference by dedicating a part of your landscape to the plants that feed and shelter pollinators. Steve will teach you how to make your yard and garden a pollinator paradise! \nSteve Pettis has spent his life studying plants and gardening.  As a child\, he gardened with his grandmother dividing daylilies\, irises and daffodils and collecting native plants in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia.  Steve has been a tree farm and nursery manager\, a research greenhouse manager\, a consulting arborist\, UGA Extension Agent in Rockdale and Gwinnett Counties\, and is now a North Carolina Horticulture Agent in Henderson County. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Edneyville Library’s calendar of events at this link. Registrations open at 10:00am Tuesday\, May 7\, 2024. \n \nThe Edneyville Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: André Michaux and his contribution to botany in the southeast
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 6\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: author\, Charles Williams \nKnown to today’s biologists primarily as the “Michx.” at the end of more than 700 plant names and to historians for his part in the Genet Affair\, André Michaux was an intrepid French naturalist. Under the directive of King Louis XVI\, he was commissioned to gather and grow American plants and ship them back to his homeland in order to improve French forestry\, agriculture\, and horticulture. He made major botanical discoveries that he published in his two landmark books\, Histoire des Chênes de l’Amérique (1801)\, a compendium of all oak species recognized from eastern North America\, and Flora Boreali-Americana (1803)\, the first account of all plants known in eastern North America. \nTo carry out his mission for the French government\, Michaux traveled from the Bahamas to Hudson’s Bay and west to the Mississippi River on a series of journeys that are indicated on a finely rendered\, color-coded map in this volume. His writings detail the many hardships and dangers that Michaux endured on the North American frontier and on his return home. But it also conveys the soaring joys of exploration in a new world where Nature still reigned supreme\, a paradise of plants mostly unknown to science. \n  \nCharlie Williams is retired librarian from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library in North Carolina. He recently authored André Michaux in North America; Journals and Letters\, 1785–1797 and he edited The Annotated Memoirs of the Life and Botanical Travels of André Michaux by J.P.F. Deleuze and chairs the André Michaux International Society (AMIS). \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: An Introduction to Western Carolina Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 11\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: David Ahrenholz \n  \nDuring this presentation\, participants will learn how to identify the butterflies of the western Carolinas through photographs taken by the presenter\, as well as the foodplants needed to attract both the caterpillar and adult stages to your home butterfly garden. \nDr. Ahrenholz began his interest in butterflies as a child in Iowa. He taught himself photography because family and friends were not interested in dead insect specimens. After medical school he continued his passion for nature photography\, photographing butterflies across the US and tropical South America. His photographs captured new species and led to an appointment as a Research Associate in the Entomology Department at the Smithsonian. He has pursued a 25 year project with the museum to document the butterflies of Ecuador in photographs and by collecting specimens. Now retired from his surgical career at the University of Minnesota\, he has moved with his wife to their horse farm in the Landrum area where he enjoys equestrian foxhunting and sharing images from his butterfly garden. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems and a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
