Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a volunteer workday removing non-native invasive species at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary\n\nBackground Info:\nPut under a conservation easement with Conserving Carolina in 2018\, Carolina Memorial Sanctuary is an 11-acre conservation & green cemetery passionate about protecting the land and conserving the environment. In addition to eco-burials\, CMS is a public park that strives to improve the land. The neighboring property\, under a conservation easement and owned by the Barkwells\, is partnering with Conserving Carolina and CMS to work on various conservation projects\, including: stream restoration\, storm water retention\, a pollinator meadow\, bluebird boxes\, invasive species removal\, native plantings\, and stream restoration \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Kudzu\, bamboo\, Chinese Privet\, Japanese Honeysuckle\, and Multiflora Rose from the sanctuary. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. You will get dirty\, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing. \nWhat to Bring:\n• Water and snacks or lunch\n• Leather Work Gloves (if you have a personal pair)\n• Small Backpack for Carrying Tools\n• Change of Clothes for Drive Home (recommended) \nWhat to Wear:\n• Closed toed shoes that can navigate off-trail terrain and can get dirty\n• Work pants; dress for the weather \n  \nPlease RSVP below.

DESCRIPTION:When: July 21\, 2024\, 2 pm – 4 pm \nMeet at: Bearwallow Mountain Trailhead \nUnplug\, unwind\, and reconnect with nature during this unique hike and outdoor yoga series on Bearwallow Mountain\, in partnership with Journey of the Microcosm. \nMonthly\, on the second to last Sunday of each month\, enjoy a one-mile hike with gentle incline (easy/moderate\, ~500’ elevation change) through the forest to the top of Bearwallow Mountain for panoramic views and an hour of yoga for all levels with certified Yoga instructor\, Kiersten Angelos\, founder of Journey of the Microcosm. Her creative instructions will be a perfect match for Bearwallow Mountain. \nPre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 12 participants. To register\, please RSVP below. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike/activity beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Bring your yoga mat\, props\, water\, and a snack. There are no facilities on site\, if needed\, please use the “facilitrees” using Leave No Trace principles. Please be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require in case of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). So\, come out and bring the kids! \nNaturalist and educator Carlton Burke lives in Mills River\, NC where he operates an educational service called “Carolina Mountain Naturalists” which specializes in presenting live animal and nature programs and displays for area schools\, summer camps\, and many other organizations. Carlton was also on staff for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits at the Western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville\, NC. One of only a few Piedmont Monadnocks in South Carolina\, this unusual land form provides a spectacular view and harbors several rare plant species.  Dan will show some of the views and plants that make this such a special place in South Carolina. \nDan Whitten is a naturalist living in the Spartanburg County since 1980.  He graduated from Auburn University with a BS degree in Wildlife Management.  He retired from Michelin North America after 30 years and began to renew his study of nature by taking the Upstate Master Naturalist Class in 2008 and the Catawba Master Naturalist Class in 2010\, and the Lowcountry Master Naturalist class in 2016.  He became a SC state certified naturalist in 2014.  He serves on the boards of the SC Native Plant Society (currently as state president)\, Friends of Jocassee\, the Tyger River Foundation\, and has served on the Foothills Conservancy from 2012 until 2018.  He works part time as a pontoon boat guide with Jocassee Lake Tours\, a hiking guide and as a Pole Manager with Spartanburg Co. DESCRIPTION:Workday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Kudzu\, bamboo\, Chinese Privet\, Japanese Honeysuckle\, and Multiflora Rose from the sanctuary. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Creating Farm Resilience Against Extreme Weather Events
DESCRIPTION:As extreme weather events continue to pose challenges for farming operations\, we must take steps to rally behind our farmers. This is why MountainTrue is conducting a Farm Weather Impact Survey with the help of their newest AmeriCorps Member\, Olivia Gray. The survey aims to better understand how extreme weather events affect agricultural production in the Southern Blue Ridge. The information we receive will help guide MountainTrue in tailoring support initiatives\, advocating for vital resources\, and implementing strategies to support farm resiliency in Western North Carolina. Join Olivia Gray and her project supervisor Erica Shanks for this presentation on the importance of local agriculture and our survey findings so far. \nOlivia Gray grew up camping and hiking and has always had an affinity for nature. She graduated from the State University of New York at Binghamton with a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and Economics. Upon graduating\, she landed her first AmeriCorps position with the University of Hawai’i Maui College\, where she focused on campus and county-wide food security efforts. Olivia is excited to be applying her knowledge of food systems to her work at MountainTrue as their Climate Action Corps AmeriCorps Member. \nErica is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Spanish and Broadcast Journalism and two reputable leadership programs. She also holds a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University. DESCRIPTION:Date: July 9\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Bill Hilton\, Jr.\, executive director of Hilton Pond North: Blue Ridge Birds & Nature\, Lansing\, NC \nRuby-throated Hummingbirds are likely the most common hummingbird species in the world\, but there is much to be learned about their life history. Alas\, many facts about hummers are clouded by misperceptions and untruths. During his presentation\, Dr. Bill Hilton Jr.\, principal investigator for “Operation RubyThroat: The Hummingbird Project\,” will “bust” some common myths about ruby-throats and share exciting results of his work—includingcitizen science hummingbird expeditions to the Neotropics. There will be plenty of time following for questions and answers about these amazing little birds that break all the rules. \nDr. Hilton was twice named South Carolina Science Teacher of the Year and was honored as the state’s Outstanding Biology Teacher. In December 2008 Discover magazine cited him as one of “50 Best Brains in Science” and one of ten top amateur scientists in America. His undergraduate major in philosophy from Newberry College was excellent preparation for his advanced science degrees from Winthrop University and University of Minnesota. \nFrom 1982 to early 2024 Dr. Hilton was based near York\, South Carolina\, at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History (www.hiltonpond.org)\, a non-profit organization he founded on family property. An active field researcher\, Hilton banded more than 79\,000 birds of 127 species during 43 years just at York. In February 2024 he moved operations to a new site in upper Ashe County\, North Carolina\, calling it “Hilton Pond North: Blue Ridge Birds & Nature\,” where he continues his innovative environmental education\, natural history research\, and conservation activities. \nDr. Hilton is one of only about 150 people authorized to capture wild hummingbirds and has banded 10\,000-plus Ruby-throated Hummingbirds since 1984. Learn about the various factors that have led to their decline\, including habitat degradation\, pollution\, and changes in river flow patterns. Discover how researchers and conservationists are coming together to protect these imperiled species\, implementing innovative strategies to restore their habitats and raise awareness about their importance. \n  \nHans\, a freshwater mussel enthusiast\, developed a passion for these aquatic creatures during his internship with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) while completing his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He gained invaluable expertise in captive propagation techniques and identifying diverse mussel species across the aquatic habitats of Western North Carolina. \nFurthering his education at Appalachian State University\, Hans earned his master’s degree and conducted his thesis research comparing freshwater mussel taxonomic relationships using a combination of DNA analysis\, geographic range data\, and shell morphology. This academic pursuit deepened his understanding of these fascinating organisms. \nFollowing his academic journey\, Hans dedicated three years to the NCWRC\, focusing on the conservation of freshwater mussels through the preservation of both wild and captive populations. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. Participants will enjoy gentle yoga along the Rocky Broad River. \nBring your own yoga mat and props\, and a water bottle. \nDr. Mattie Decker’s friend Kiersten Angelos will begin a monthly offering here of Nature and Yoga! Kiersten is an ANFT-Certified Forest Therapy Guide and a Yoga Teacher certified in both Vinyasa yoga (200RYT) and Ayuryoga (500RYT).  She moved here from Albuquerque\, New Mexico where she was certified as an Ayurvedic Practitioner with The Ayurvedic Institute. With all of her training\, she helps guide others to live life harmoniously by incorporating wellness and holistic teachings. DESCRIPTION:Date: June 22\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat – in the orchard \nSpeaker: Elaine Eisenbraun\, Executive Director of the Nikwasi Initiative\, and Kirstie Frady\, Enrolled Member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) \nPeople have lived on\, learned from\, and altered this extraordinary landscape for millennia. Noquisi Initiative invites people to cross the bridge between Cherokee heritage and today’s society.  How does the scenery out our window\, the stories we tell\, even the language we speak bring us together as people and with our homeland. How can we incorporate Cherokee wisdom into our approach to the land and each other? What can we offer in return? This presentation will share the interplay between people and place and how it is influenced by our own experience. \nElaine Eisenbraun guides Noquisi Initiative in its mission to ‘preserve\, protect\, and promote culture and history in the original homelands of the Cherokee. This is Elaine’s fourth executive directorship and she sees this organization as the one that can have the greatest impact on place-based understanding of diverse cultures. Elaine’s undergraduate work was in forest management\, which led to several years of working in the woods for industry\, government and consulting. She believes that her years working in the woods was where she learned to see relationships that tend to elude the eye. After drifting toward environmental education\, Elaine directed organizations in Vermont and Oregon. She taught communities to be “community focused and landscape reflected.” In a short detour\, Elaine founded and led an organization that brought fine art to critically ill children. Then she came to western North Carolina to combine her skills in landscape awareness\, community development\, art\, and outreach. Together\, her experience and Master of Science degree in Leadership and Management helps her embrace the tasks that unfold every day within Noquisi Initiative. Sometime\, ask her about her fun work in such diverse fields as: avalanche study\, equipment operation\, textiles\, fire fighting\, wildlife management and more. \nKirstie is a recent graduate of the Dadiwonisi Cherokee Language and Heritage program for enrolled Tribal members.  She has worked as a Cherokee language transcriber.  Kirstie now works for Noquisi Initiative and attends college seeking a degree in Human Services. She is a traditional basket weaver and lives in Robbinsville (Snowbird) with her husband and 6 children. \n​The Nikwasi Initiative was founded to promote\, interpret and link cultural and historic sites (such as the Noquisiyi and Cowee mounds) along a Cherokee Cultural Corridor\, along with raising awareness and funds to pursue those efforts and exploring more opportunities for collaboration between the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and local communities.  \nGuests will park in the orchard at Laughing Waters Retreat\, accessed from the address below\, and walk up a little hill and gravel driveway to the pavilion.  If anyone has mobility challenges\, there is the opportunity to be dropped off closer to the pavilion. \n \nPrograms at Laughing Waters Retreat Center are made possible thanks to our partnership with Laughing Waters Retreat Center. DESCRIPTION:Date: June 19\, 2024 \nTime: 11:00 am \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat Center \nConserving Carolina volunteers are invited to join us to explore Laughing Waters Retreat Center and the Hickory Nut Forest Eco-community located in Gerton\, NC. \nHickory Nut Forest (HNF)\, an intentionally planned community\, was founded by the late John Myers and his wife Jane Lawson in 2006.  HNF has 20 homesites on 25 acres with an additional 35-acre conservation-easement common area\, which is protected through Conserving Carolina. Community members also have access to 60 acres of adjacent property which includes Laughing Waters Retreat Center and an organic orchard and gardens. Currently\, the community has 9 completed homes with several more in the planning stages. The pillars of the community are Earth Stewardship\, Green Built Homes\, Renewable Energy\, Healthy Food\, and Education. \nStarting at Laughing Waters Retreat Center\, we will learn about the history and intentions of the site and the activities that the Center offers. Then\, we will tour the micro – hydro system which powers all the buildings of Laughing Waters from Hickory Nut Creek. \nAfter the tour of Laughing Waters\, we will carpool to Hickory Nut Forest\, less than half a mile up 74A\, to see and learn more about the green community. \nParticipants are invited to enjoy a hike at the nearby Florence Nature Preserve or Wildcat Rock trails after the tour of the Eco-community. \nBe prepared for walking on uneven surfaces and be sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a snack bag and/or lunch and plenty of water for yourself. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series: The Backyard Chorus - Insect Songs Through the Seasons
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 15\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Timothy G. Forrest\, Professor Emeritus\, Department of Biology\, UNC-Asheville \nWhy do insects make sounds?  How do they make sounds?  What are the common sound-producing species in North Carolina and when are they most active?  If you are curious about these questions\, this is a presentation for you!  This presentation is a brief introduction to the most common singing insects with special reference to those in North Carolina.  The talk discusses the function and mechanisms of sound production for crickets\, katydids\, and cicadas.  Along with learning tidbits of natural history and the behavior of singing insects\, you hear the species-specific songs that help you identify them and you learn how the chorus in your backyard changes during the year. \nTim Forrest is an Emeritus Professor of Biology at UNC-Asheville and has been studying and teaching about insect biology and behavior for over 40 years.   He received Masters and Doctoral degrees in Entomology from the University of Florida.
