SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: The Backyard Chorus – Insect Songs Through the Seasons
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: “Flickr – ggallice – Katydid (1)” by Geoff Gallice from Gainesville\, FL\, USA is licensed under CC BY 2.0. \nDate: March 10\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Timothy G. Forrest\, Professor Emeritus\, Department of Biology\, UNC-Asheville \nWhy do insects make sounds?  How do they make sounds?  What are the common sound-producing species in North Carolina and when are they most active?  If you are curious about these questions\, this is a presentation for you!  This presentation is a brief introduction to the most common singing insects with special reference to those in North Carolina.  The talk discusses the function and mechanisms of sound production for crickets\, katydids\, and cicadas.  Along with learning tidbits of natural history and the behavior of singing insects\, you hear the species-specific songs that help you identify them and you learn how the chorus in your backyard changes during the year. \nTim Forrest is an Emeritus Professor of Biology at UNC-Asheville and has been studying and teaching about insect biology and behavior for over 40 years.   He received Masters and Doctoral degrees in Entomology from the University of Florida. After postdoctoral research in Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University\, he took a position in the Biology Department at UNCA.  There\, Tim taught courses in Ecology\, Evolution\, Animal Behavior\, Invertebrate Zoology\, and Entomology.  For 9 years during his 25-year tenure at UNCA\, Tim organized and ran Bug Camp\, a week-long summer camp for middle school students. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: A Few Stops on a Walk Around the Yard (and Beyond)
DESCRIPTION:Date: March 17\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Dr. Mike Ferro\, Entomologist and Collection Manager for the Plant and Environmental Sciences Department at Clemson University \nWhere manicured lawns meet the deep forest\, stories begin to surface. This free educational program explores the unexpected world at the edge—where history\, fashion\, forbidden practices\, insects\, birds\, and blooming plants collide. Join us for a brisk and surprising history of the lawn\, vivid tales of wet leaves and rotting stumps\, and ecological advice that might just skirt the rules. You’ll also get a gentle introduction to observing and collecting insects—using cameras and curious fingers only. No experience required\, just a willingness to look closely and wander a little off the beaten path. \nMike grew up playing in the mud on a wooded farm in Missouri and started collecting bugs as part of a 4-H project when he was 8 or 9 years old. When he was an undergraduate he did some research trying to find populations of a rare dragonfly\, the grey petaltail\, in Missouri. For his masters research he tried to collect and document all the mayflies\, stoneflies\, and caddisflies in 15 Missouri State Parks. The larvae of those bugs live in water and are used to monitor water quality. Over two years he collected 44\,593 specimens and identified 213 species! For his Ph.D. he tried to find out what beetles live in which kinds of dead wood in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He did several studies and collected more than 12\,000 beetles representing more than 600 species. He also got to describe several new species of beetles (and a fly!) from the Smokies and other parts of the eastern US. Currently\, Mike manages the Arthropod museum at Clemson University\, which is a library for bugs. There are over a million specimens. Mike gets to collect bugs and help others do the same. The job lets him work with lots of different types of bugs and numerous projects\, including webspinners\, bark lice\, scorpionflies\, weird lacewings\, fireflies\, etc. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series: Finding “Trails of Tears” and Creating a National Historic Trail in Southwestern North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Date: March 21\, 2026 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nPresentation Location: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Dr. Brett Riggs\, Sequoyah Distinguished Professor of Cherokee Studies at Western Carolina University \nFor more than forty years researchers have worked to find and document remnants of landscapes associated with the 1838 deportations of Cherokee peoples from their Southeastern homelands. Here in North Carolina\, we’ve used detailed survey records to find remains of Cherokee homes\, trails and roads\, and the federal military infrastructure used to dispossess and displace Cherokee families. These archaeological landscapes are now under protections and interpretive development as part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail\, a National Park Service administered network that stretches from North Carolina to Oklahoma. We’ll take a look at these landscapes and the future of the National Historic Trail that remembers a tragic and shameful episode of the American story. \nBrett High Riggs (Ph.D.\, University of Tennessee) is Sequoyah Distinguished Professor of Cherokee Studies at Western Carolina University. Prior to joining Western Carolina University\, Riggs was a research archaeologist and assistant professor in the Research Laboratories of Archaeology at the University of North Carolina. He previously served as deputy Tribal Historic Preservation Officer and archaeologist for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (ECBI) and serves on the executive committee of the National Trail of Tears Association. Riggs specializes in the archaeology and ethnohistory of the Cherokee and Catawba peoples; his studies of Removal-era Cherokee archaeology and documentary sources guided expansion and interpretation of the NPS Trail of Tears National Historic Trail in North Carolina and Tennessee. His current work focuses on Cherokee traditional landscapes and restoration of form and meanings of traditional geographies. \nWe acknowledge that though we are the current stewards\, the land where we live and work is stolen land. Homeland of the Cherokee\, the Yuchi\, and the Catawba people\, acquired through genocide and forced removal. While Brett Riggs ancestry is not Indigenous\, in 2025 the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians named him as an honorary member. Check out the article here. \nRSVP is requested below\, but not necessary to attend the event! Please join us! \n \nThe Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Preserve. \n*Walnut Creek Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Etowah Library Speaker Series: Wildflowers of the Cove Forest: Ecology\, Adaptations\, and Hidden Stories
DESCRIPTION:Date: March 25\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 pm \nLocation: Etowah Library \nSpeaker: E.J. Dwigans\, Forest Ranger and an environmental educator with the North Carolina Forest Service \nJoin us for an engaging\, photo presentation exploring the rich diversity of wildflowers found in Southern Appalachian cove forests\, with a special focus on Holmes Educational State Forest. This one-hour talk will dive into the ecology of these lush\, species-rich forests and the wildflowers that thrive within them. We’ll explore how spring ephemerals and other forest herbs survive in shaded environments\, the fascinating ways wildflowers are pollinated and disperse their seeds\, and the unique adaptations that allow them to take advantage of brief windows of light and moisture. Along the way\, you’ll learn fun facts\, natural history stories\, and ecological connections that reveal why cove forests are among the most botanically diverse ecosystems in North America. \nE.J. Dwigans is a Forest Ranger and an environmental educator with the North Carolina Forest Service\, where he has worked for the past nine years at Holmes Educational State Forest. During that time\, he has explored and studied every corner of the forest’s ecosystems and leads annual guided wildflower hikes for students and the general public. His work focuses on helping people build meaningful connections to the natural world. E.J. grew up near Uwharrie National Forest in Randolph County\, North Carolina\, and developed an early passion for the outdoors through scouting. \nIn addition to his educational work\, E.J. serves as a Public Information Officer for the North Carolina Forest Service and most recently supported wildfire response and public communication during the Black Cove Complex wildfires in Polk County. He believes strongly in the role of environmental education in fostering long-term stewardship of North Carolina’s forestland. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Etowah Library’s calendar of events at this link. \n \nThe Etowah Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information. \n

SUMMARY:Hexastylis Bioblitz by North Pacolet River
DESCRIPTION:Join our Natural Resource Manager Torry Nergart on an exploration of  a spectacular biological ecology. We will hike and/or shuttle to locations along the North Pacolet River Gorge\, including glades and rock outcrops\, rich cove forests\, and other varieties of habitat and terrain. Prepare for backcountry hiking\, and consider preparing an iNaturalist account which will be our primary data collector. \nWe will focus our observation efforts on the Hexastylis section of Aristolochiacaea- the “Little Brown Jugs” wildflower. Once plant identifications are uploaded to iNaturalist\, our Hexastylis observations will contribute to bodies of research on the range and distribution of the several species in the genera. \nBelow is the link to the  iNaturalist project where we will be recording data: \nhttps://www.inaturalist.org/projects/hex-flex-26-hexastylis-bioblitz-pacolet-river-gorge \nMeeting Place: Norman Wilder Forest trailhead\, Hwy 176 west of Tryon. \nWhat to Bring:  Appropriate clothing for exploring and getting dirty and wet!  Bring your lunch\, snacks\, and plenty of drinking water. \nRSVP is Required.

SUMMARY:Pollinator Paradise Partners
DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main access to the Oklawaha Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25 just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nClick here for a GPS dropped pin. \nCome when you can\, and leave when you need to. \nFor more information\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org. \nPlease RSVP below.
