DESCRIPTION:Where:  Upper Hickory Nut Gorge Trailhead\nDate:     November 10\, 2025\nTime:     10:00 AM – 12:00 PM\n  \nJoin us as we partner with Henderson County in assisting County staff with litter clean up around the parking lot of the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trailhead. County staff will be on site early to set up and will provide trash bags\, safety vests\, gloves\, and trash grabbers. We recommend volunteers wear long sleeves\, long pants\, close-toed shoes\, and sun protection as needed. \n*Please note: The site is accessible from 74-A; however you should expect delays due to the presence of stop lights along the routes. Grant Mountain Rd is closed daily from 9am – 4pm\, so folks should avoid any route that will take them on that road.

DESCRIPTION:Photo by Diane Carr/AllTrails.com \nWhere: Holmes Educational State Forest \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.9  miles\, moderate/strenuous; trail type – lollipop \nElevation gain: 767′ \nApproximately 20 minute drive \nHikers will follow the Short Cut trail starting in the valley of Crab Creek. After following the Short Cut trail for a short distance the group will take the Forest Demonstration trail with opportunities to enjoy the beautiful forest\, a small pond\, and views of the surrounding area. The trail ascends approximately 767′ before descending back down the mountain\, making a loop in the 235 acre Forest. \n[Except from their website] Holmes Educational State Forest has been providing the citizens of North Carolina a living outdoor classroom where visitors of all ages can learn about the local natural forest environment since 1977. The forest\, which started out as a nursery developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps\, has now become one of seven educational state forests located throughout the state. The land along Crab Creek Road was obtained by the state in the mid-1930’s to provide North Carolina landowners White pine and Yellow poplar seedlings. By the late 1960’s the state moved the nursery to Avery County and developed Holmes has a small state forest. Since then\, the forest has grown into a diverse woodscape that includes many other plant species from herbs on the forest floor to towering forest trees. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, October 31\, 2025.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. SUMMARY:Pollinator Paradise Partners
DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25) just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be  a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nThe best way to find the access area is to put N. Main Automotive\, Hendersonville in your GPS\, and that will get you almost there. Go a little further and then pull into the parking lot mentioned above.  Go left on the Greenway and walk a short distance\, and you will find the garden on the right side\, marked with Conserving Carolina signs. \nCome when you can\, and leave when you need to. \nFor more information or to sign-up\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org.
