DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are usually scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. SUMMARY:Lingering Hemlock Search
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this special opportunity to make a difference for our native Hemlocks! \nThe Lingering Hemlock Project\, a subset of The Nature Conservancy’s “Tree Species in Peril\,” aims to locate and selectively breed eastern and Carolina hemlocks with genetic resistance to the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). This insect is invasive in eastern North America and has already contributed to widespread hemlock mortality in much of the southeastern United States.  While strategies such as chemical control are effective in the short-term\, longer-term hemlock protection depends on biocontrol and selective breeding to promote hemlock woolly adelgid resistance. In this workshop\, Olivia Hall from the Hemlock Restoration Initiative will share more about how to identify a ‘lingering hemlock’ and how to report it when spotted. By detecting these lingering hemlocks that may be more resistant to the damage caused by HWA\, we can identify HWA-resistant genotypes to support resistance breeding in eastern and Carolina hemlocks. \nWe will meet at the Turkey Pen trailhead in Horse Shoe\, which is about a 1 mile drive up an unpaved road. We will walk about 2 miles total and will be back at the trailhead by 3:00pm. \nThere will be a pretty extensive stream crossing near the beginning due to a bridge that is out. It is typically just below knee depth (for a 5’4″ tall woman). Bring waders\, water shoes\, a change of socks\, pants that roll up\, trekking poles\, and/or anything else that you need to feel comfortable completing this crossing. If conditions make us unable to comfortably cross the stream\, we have a backup plan that we can pivot to. \nPlease dress appropriately for a hike\, bring water and whatever else you need to be comfortable.  We will be finding and reporting the lingering Hemlocks we find\, so please download the TreeSnap app on your phone ahead of time. \nCapacity is limited to 15 participants\, and RSVPs are required.  Email Mary\, mary@conservingcarolina.org\, if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Youngs Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Where: Youngs Mountain \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 4.2 miles\, moderate/strenuous; trail type – out and back \nElevation gain: 1\,200′ \nApproximately 50 minute drive \nLocated on the north side of Lake Lure\, this trail ascends 1\,200 feet in elevation to reach the top of scenic cliffs near the summit of the mountain. This dramatic destination offers panoramic views of Lake Lure\, Rumbling Bald\, Weed Patch Mountain\, and the lower Hickory Nut Gorge. On a clear day\, Mt. Mitchell and the Black Mountains are also visible. \nThis trail traverses 437 acres of land protected by Conserving Carolina. It is part of the emerging Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail network\, and will one day connect to other trails\, including the nearby Weed Patch Mountain Trail. The Youngs Mountain Trail also represents a likely future connection between the Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail and the proposed Wilderness Gateway State Trail\, which will ultimately extend as far east as Hickory! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, October 3\, 2025.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Where: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve \nMeet: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve\, Oak Grove Rd\, Landrum\, SC 29356 (see map link below) \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nWhat to expect: 5.5–miles\, moderately strenuous; trail type-lollipop; elevation change 928′ \n  \nHikers\, and their dogs\, are invited to join Conserving Carolina and the Foothills Humane Society (FHS) on Saturday\, October 25 for a 5.5-mile hike at Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve in South Carolina. \nThis is a great opportunity to give a shelter dog a break from the shelter and allow them to enjoy a nice\, socializing walk in the woods. There is a limit to the number of dogs that can come from the shelter\, so if you’re interested in walking a dog\, please contact the Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator for FHS no later than Wednesday\, October 15th to arrange a time for training orientation\, pairing with the appropriate dog\, and to sign a volunteer waiver. E-mail communityoutreach@foothillshumanesociety.org . Participants may also bring their own dog on the hike so long as they are kept on leash and do not have any nose-to-nose meetings with the shelter dogs. \nThe 5.5-mile hike is 2.75-miles out and 2.75-miles back and it starts out as relatively easy\, winding through new growth forest and along several streams\, gradually becoming moderately strenuous as the trail ascends Squirrel Mountain through a rich hardwood forest with beautiful rock outcroppings. After reaching the ridge top\, the trail descends Squirrel Mountain through a lush cove forest to the South Pacolet River\, at the base of Chestnut Ridge. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. To register\, please RSVP below. \n  \nHikers will meet at the Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve parking area/trailhead at 10:00 a.m. to check in. We would like FHS to have a parking spot in the lot\, if possible\, for ease and safety getting the dogs out and to their walkers.  (There is overflow parking along Oak Grove Road.)  Hikers should be prepared to return to the area in the late afternoon. DESCRIPTION:Barred Owl by Sara Jackson \nDate: October 28\, 2025 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Pam Torlina\, Community Engagement Director \nTorlina’s presentation will focus on the several species of owls found in the Carolinas and highlight the special characteristics that make them successful predators of the night. \nDuring the presentation\, participants will get an up-close look at feathers\, talons\, and owl specimens in order to gain a better understanding of their unique characteristics (it is illegal to possess any part of a migratory bird without the proper permitting\, and Conserving Carolina is permitted by the federal government to collect and possess bird specimens to be used for educational purposes). \nTorlina\, a biologist\, has been with the Conservancy for 19 years.  She has over 30 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator.  She has worked with the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation-Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve\, in Haliburton\, Ontario\, Canada\, where she has performed annual migratory and breeding bird surveys\, surveys on nocturnal owls\, hawks and woodpeckers\, presented educational programs on birds for adults and children\, conducted nest searches and nest record data in the U.S. and Canada\, participated in data collection for the most recent Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas\, she volunteered with a licensed bird bander in the past\, and she is a co-regional coordinator for the current North Carolina Bird Atlas. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 1pm –  3pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over 2 acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:Where: Swiftwater Farm\, private property \nMeet: Katydid Lane\, Mill Spring\, NC\, at 8:45 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 5 miles\, moderate\, loop \nThis hike will take place on private property next to the Green River in Mill Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam. Join us to celebrate autumn and Halloween! What better way to celebrate YOU\, our volunteers\, All Hallows’ Eve\, and the change of the seasons and glory of autumn leaf color! \nJoin us at Swiftwater Farm for a scenic 5 mile trail featuring stunning mountain vistas overlooking the Lake Adger Dam. Then descend into the ravine where you will walk along Hitching Creek observing lovely ground cedar\, rhododendron\, and large rock outcroppings. Cross over into another ravine along natural springs and creeks where you witness remnants of past gold mining history. Following the creek leads you to a 1 mile stretch along the Green River where you will see signs of the grain milling history. From the Green River\, we will cross over the mountain along more creeks and springs to complete our loop trail. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ to see if the hike will take place. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25) just before the bridge over Mud Creek). Another explores how Conserving Carolina is restoring natural floodplains\, a type of work that not only reduces flood risk but also revives vital wildlife habitats. Participants will enjoy a hike to grassy knolls that offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains\, through the maturing forest\, and along Walnut Creek to Walnut Creek Falls. *The Preserve is private land\, and the public is only allowed on the property by invitation\, so take advantage of this unique opportunity to enjoy the serenity of this beautiful property in the glory of autumn. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25) just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be  a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nThe best way to find the access area is to put N. Main Automotive\, Hendersonville in your GPS\, and that will get you almost there. DESCRIPTION:Where:  Upper Hickory Nut Gorge Trailhead\nDate:     November 10\, 2025\nTime:     10:00 AM – 12:00 PM\n  \nJoin us as we partner with Henderson County in assisting County staff with litter clean up around the parking lot of the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trailhead. A bear accessed the dumpster in the parking lot and\, doing what bears do\, made quite a mess of garbage in the area. There is likely about 10 large trash bags worth of litter to pick up. \nWe will be meeting in the parking lot for the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trailhead. County staff will be on site early to set up and will provide trash bags\, safety vests\, gloves\, and trash grabbers. We recommend volunteers wear long sleeves\, long pants\, close-toed shoes\, and sun protection as needed. \n*Please note: The site is accessible from 74-A; however you should expect delays due to the presence of stop lights along the routes. Grant Mountain Rd is closed daily from 9am – 4pm\, so folks should avoid any route that will take them on that road.
