If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25) just before the bridge over Mud Creek) which will be marked by a Conserving Carolina sign. \nCome when you can\, and leave when you need to. \nFor more information or to sign-up\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Carolina Wild!
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 19\, 2025 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Melissa Fuentes\, Clemson museum curator \n\nSouth Carolina is a treasure trove of diverse ecosystems\, offering us a rich tapestry of wildlife. This program aims to introduce participants to the native mammals\, reptiles and amphibians\, fish\, insects\, and birds of South Carolina\, while emphasizing the importance of preservation and conservation and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world and inspire active involvement in conservation efforts. \nMelissa Fuentes was raised in Eagle Pass\, TX\, a small border town nestled against the rugged beauty of the Texas hill country. Her childhood was filled with adventure—hunting\, catching armadillos and snakes\, and immersing herself in the wild landscapes that shaped her love for the natural world. That passion soon extended beyond exploration and into academia\, where she developed a deep curiosity for science\, literature\, and the arts. \nAfter high school\, Melissa pursued her education at two universities\, earning degrees in Biology\, English\, and the arts—all centered on her lifelong commitment to teaching others about nature. Her academic journey led her to further studies\, but fate intervened when she was offered a position at Clemson University. As the curator of the Bob and Betsy Museum of Natural History\, she found the perfect space to merge scholarship with storytelling. Eight years later\, she remains the same curious\, fearless explorer\, dedicated to educating and inspiring others through the wonders of the natural world. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Green River Library Speaker Series: An Introduction To Western Carolina Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 28\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Green River Library \nSpeaker: David Ahrenholz \nButterfly populations across the United States have declined at least 22% since 2000. This presentation is an introduction to the butterflies occurring in the fields\, forests and lawns of Western North Carolina and it includes ways to us backyard plants to attract and support them. \nDr. Ahrenholz began his interest in butterflies as a child in Iowa. He taught himself photography because family and friends were not interested in dead insect specimens. After medical school he continued his passion for nature photography\, photographing butterflies across the US and tropical South America. His photographs captured new species and led to an appointment as a Research Associate in the Entomology Department at the Smithsonian. He has pursued a 25-year project with the museum to document the butterflies of Ecuador in photographs and by collecting specimens. After retiring from his surgical career at the University of Minnesota\, he moved with his wife to their horse farm in the Landrum area where he enjoys equestrian foxhunting and sharing images from his butterfly garden. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Green River Library’s calendar of events at this link.  \n \nThe Green River Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Guided Mushroom/Ecology Walk at Swiftwater Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Olga Katić\, owner of Mushroom Mountain!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 30th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. This program was accepted by Health Departments of 7 states\, and counting\, and also endorsed by the FDA. In her free time\, Olga loves to be in the woods\, picking mushrooms and wild plants\, and of course taking tons of pictures of anything she finds. She is fascinated by nature in every possible aspect. \n  \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. A loop/hand lens may be helpful\, if you have one to bring! \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by e-mail\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, by 8 a.m. on the day of the walk and/or check the Conserving Carolina website calendar event to see if the walk will take place. \nSpace is limited. SUMMARY:Pollinator Paradise Partners
DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference.

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series - Freshwater Mussels of the Western Carolinas
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 9\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Hans Lohmeyer\, freshwater ecologist and Conserving Carolina Stewardship Coordinator \nDive into the captivating world of freshwater mussels found in the mountain and foothill regions of the Carolinas\, as we unravel their biology\, ecology\, and pressing conservation concerns. This engaging talk offers a comprehensive overview of these remarkable creatures\, exploring their unique life cycle\, habitat preferences\, and the factors contributing to their alarming decline. \nJoin us on a journey through the rivers and streams that serve as the home for these hidden gems. Discover the intricate relationship between freshwater mussels and their environment\, as we explore their vital role in maintaining water quality and stream bed stability. Gain insight into the fascinating reproductive strategies and the complex interactions that shape their existence. \nHowever\, this talk also sheds light on the challenges faced by freshwater mussels. Learn about the various factors that have led to their decline\, including habitat degradation\, pollution\, and changes in river flow patterns. Explore the interconnectedness of these factors and their impact on the delicate balance of freshwater ecosystems. \nBy the end of this talk\, you will develop a deeper appreciation for the significance of freshwater mussels and the urgent need for their conservation. Discover how researchers and conservationists are coming together to protect these imperiled species\, implementing innovative strategies to restore their habitats and raise awareness about their importance. \n  \nHans\, a freshwater mussel enthusiast\, developed a passion for these aquatic creatures during his internship with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) while completing his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He gained invaluable expertise in captive propagation techniques and identifying diverse mussel species across the aquatic habitats of Western North Carolina. \nFurthering his education at Appalachian State University\, Hans earned his master’s degree and conducted his thesis research comparing freshwater mussel taxonomic relationships using a combination of DNA analysis\, geographic range data\, and shell morphology. This academic pursuit deepened his understanding of these fascinating organisms. \nFollowing his academic journey\, Hans dedicated three years to the NCWRC\, focusing on the conservation of freshwater mussels through the preservation of both wild and captive populations. Recently\, he has taken on the role of Stewardship Coordinator at Conserving Carolina\, collaborating with private landowners to promote conservation easements. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Welcome Back to the Bluebirds
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 23\, 2025 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Evangaline LaMore \nThe Eastern Bluebird\, a cavity nester that was once widespread throughout North America\, experienced a notable decrease in its population during the early 20th century. This decline was largely attributed to habitat loss caused by the invasion of non-native species such as European Starlings and House Sparrows\, which competed fiercely for nesting locations. However\, due to conservation initiatives\, such as the extensive use of nest boxes\, their numbers have significantly recovered in recent decades\, highlighting a successful example of human efforts in bird conservation. The North American Bluebird Society\, established in 1978\, was instrumental in protect bluebird populations. During this presentation\, you will learn about the history of the Eastern Bluebird in North America and the role of the North American Bluebird Society and its primary goal\, to protect bluebird populations through education\, research\, and promoting the installation of bluebird nest boxes. \nEvangeline LaMore\, Songbird rehabilitator for over 20 years\, and Polk County coordinator for The North Carolina Bluebird Society for 4 years. She started her journey with songbirds by volunteering at Earthplace Nature Center\, in Westport\, CT\, where she learned about wildlife rehabilitation. In 2005\, Evangeline moved to N.C. and pursued a Federal and State permit to rehabilitate Migratory Songbirds at her home. In 2022\, she established a bluebird trail at Harmon Field and has worked with many groups and individuals to erect bluebird boxes throughout the regoin.
