This presentation will highlight Conserving Carolina’s innovative floodplain restoration projects along the French Broad River\, focusing on their important role in mitigating flood risks\, improving biodiversity\, and enhancing water quality. Using real-world examples\, such as the Pleasant Grove and Kings Bridge restorations\, we’ll explore strategies to restore natural functions to floodplains and build resilience against extreme weather events like Tropical Storm Helene. Attendees will gain insights into effective restoration techniques\, the power of community partnerships\, and the importance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge. Join us to learn how these projects serve as a model for creating thriving\, sustainable landscapes that support both people and nature. \nTorlina received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of South Carolina Upstate and has been working with the Conservancy for nearly 19 years. She has more than 30 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator. DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. Steeped in an economy of conveniences\, this system provides on demand food\, but has shown devastating impacts on environment\, health\, and community. Could a shift back to local be the answer to these 3 top issues faced today? \nJoin us for a discussion entitled\, “Localization; the answer to more than just the environmental crisis?” with Tia Wackerhagen\, RN\, BSN\, Food and Agriculture Committee Co-chair\, and member of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments. \nTia is a registered nurse for Roof Above in Charlotte North Carolina\, serving individuals who have recently come out of chronic homelessness. She is passionate about equality not only in health care\, but in food systems. To further strengthen this passion\, Tia is pursuing her doctorate in nursing practice in family nurse practitioner specialty at East Carolina University. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Date: May 13\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Mark Ray\, NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) Engagement Program Specialist \nThanks to conservation efforts\, black bears have made a dramatic comeback in North Carolina. As bears expand into areas with suitable habitat\, it is important for communities to learn how to coexist with them. Living with bears is part of life in North Carolina. \nMark has been an advocate outdoorsman his entire life\, being a native of the NC Appalachian Mountains. His desire to extend his outdoors love and knowledge led him to employment with the NCWRC as an Enforcement Officer in March of 2007. He has worked from Manteo to Murphy with NCWRC Agency and has developed an even greater love for this state and its wildlife resources. He currently lives in Macon County with his wife/best friend.  As of September 2016\, he has worked as an educator\, coordinator\, and program developer with the NCWRC education division. DESCRIPTION:Date: May 17\, 2025 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Erica Shanks\, Green Riverkeeper and Watershed Outreach Coordinator with MountainTrue \n\nThe Green Riverkeeper will be presenting on the status of the Lower Green River after Hurricane Helene. You can expect to hear updates about the cleanup process\, bank stabilization ideas and projects moving forward\, volunteer opportunities\, and what the future of the Green River looks like this season for recreation. You will also hear about water sampling efforts and how to get involved! \nErica is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Spanish and Broadcast Journalism and two reputable leadership programs. She also holds a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University. Throughout her collegiate experience\, she found her passion for helping others while studying abroad in Mexico for three summers and living with amazing host families and teaching English as a Second Language at local schools and an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. After graduation\, she spent time serving as an Americorps*VISTA Member in Spartanburg\, South Carolina\, where she fell in love with the conservation world and local food movement. For the past 10 years\, Erica has worked in the agricultural field supporting new and beginning farmers\, managing farmer’s markets\, running her own small farm business\, and advocating for the protection of farmland for future beginning farmers. He is the South Carolina Park Services coordinator with the South Carolina Master Naturalist Program and is an Educational Leadership Partner for the South Carolina Aquarium. DESCRIPTION:Come join Dr. Mattie Decker for Writing with Nature! This includes an experience of Shinrin Yoku\, known as “Forest Bathing” with Mattie Decker\, ANFT certified guide and mindfulness teacher. We gather in a circle\, with mindfulness meditation before embarking into the forest to “find our spot”\, our tree\, or place we are drawn to sit and write. Afterward there are refreshments shared\, as we tell about our experiences\, often reading what we’ve written. Participants are also encouraged to bring writing they are working on\, or journals to continue projects they are midst. There are always surprises\, and amazement in how the medicine of the forest provides us what is uniquely needed for each of us. For new writers\, or those who are writers\, this experience offers a dimension of awakening to the deep relationship we each have in Nature. \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat\, HWY 74A at Gerton. DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are invited to help clean up trash with Conserving Carolina and French Broad Paddle Trail Manager\, Jack Henderson\, and other members of MountainTrue’s French Broad Riverkeeper team. \nThe clean-up will be boat-based and focus on the French Broad River in Transylvania County between Pisgah Forest River Access and Penrose Boating Access Area. \nMountainTrue can provide canoes (with paddles and PFDs) to volunteers with previous paddling experience\, but attendees are otherwise requested to bring their own boats. MountainTrue will also provide gloves\, trash bags\, a dumpster for trash removal\, and a shuttle to the put-in at Pisgah Forest River Access. \nIf you need to borrow a boat from MountainTrue\, please use the boat request form. (We have a limited number of boats so you must complete this form to borrow a boat). \nALL participants\, regardless of whether you are borrowing a boat or bringing your own\, must sign-up through this “sign-up link” to ensure we can adhere to safety standards for the maximum number of participants. \nPlease bring: \n\nPFD if bringing your own boat.\nAppropriate clothing and footwear for paddling and cleaning up trash (closed-toed shoes recommended).\nDrinking water\, snacks\, lunch.\nChange of clothes for after the event.\n\nKids under the age of 18 are allowed as long as accompanied by a parent/guardian AND are experienced paddlers. \nTo thank you for your time\, volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. Please email members@mountaintrue.org to request yours. \nREGISTER HERE. \nThis event has been generously-sponsored by Explore Brevard through the Transylvania County TDA’s Transylvania Always grant program. DESCRIPTION:Date: June 4\, 2025 \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nLocation: Edneyville Library \nSpeaker: Mary Miller\, AmeriCorps Project Conserve member serving as Community Engagement Associate for Conserving Carolina \nHave you ever wanted to turn your organic waste into fertile soil? Join us for an all-encompassing discussion on turning your garden/food waste into black gold. In her program\, Mary will discuss the benefits of composting in your backyard\, how to turn food\, garden waste\, and leaves into nutrient rich soil\, the do’s and don’t’s when composting\, and the tools and methods for making good compost. \nMary is a Master Gardener with the NC Extension Service in Transylvania county.  She has a MS in Environmental Sustainability and did her Capstone Project on Community Composting.  She is also an AmeriCorps member serving as a Community Engagement Associate with Conserving Carolina! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Edneyville Library’s calendar of events at this link.  \n \nThe Edneyville Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Native Plant Gardening Group
DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 9am –  12pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda.
