DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a native plant rescue! \n  \nA garden of Common Milkweed at a private residence in Pisgah Forest is in need of rescue and relocation! Join us to help dig up these important pollinator plants and a larval host plant of the Monarch butterfly! \nParticipants are welcome to take rhizomes/plants home to plant or they can help pot them up to be used in native pollinator gardens and restoration sites in the region. \n  \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be digging and potting up Common Milkweed rhizomes. \nVolunteers must be able to walk a short distances over relatively level terrain. Please bring a digging tool (shovel preferred) and gloves. Pots will be provided but if you have some at home\, please bring them! These animals are integral parts of a healthy ecosystem\, healthy earth\, and healthy humans\, yet they have been misunderstood and mistreated by many for centuries. It’s time to end the misunderstandings and build some respect for our wild friends. \n\nThis program will include LIVE ANIMALS and will be perfect for all ages!  So\, come out and bring the kids\, to meet Steve and his friends and learn some amazing secrets of our less than cuddly wild neighbors.\n\n\n\nSteve is from Hendersonville\, North Carolina and has worked as an interpretive naturalist for many years and with many organizations. He is the Executive Director of Earthshine Nature Programs. However\, nearly half of southeastern bumble bee species are at risk of extinction. To protect our bees\, conservationists need more information about our rare bumble bees and their habitat requirements. The Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas is a community science project that aims to track and understand southeastern bumble bees. This presentation will cover the background of the Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas\, our findings so far\, and how you can get involved. The Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas is led by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation in collaboration with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Division\, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources\, and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. \nLaurie Hamon is an Endangered Species Conservation Biologist with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and the lead coordinator for the Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas. Laurie earned a PhD in Biology and Entomology from North Carolina State University with a thesis on the pollination biology of Venus flytraps. DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the Saluda Grade Trail! The Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy will present the results of a year-long engineering and economic impact study to the public in two meetings\, one in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. \nThese presentations will address: \n\nFindings from public input – community goals and concerns\nRail to trail development process\nExisting condition of the trail corridor and bridges\nTrail design and safety recommendations from the engineering team\nProjected regional economic impacts\n\n\n\nConserving Carolina is one of three nonprofit partners spearheading the Saluda Grade Trail\, along with Upstate Forever and PAL: Play\, Advocate\, Live Well. Together\, these three nonprofits partners formed the Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy to advance the trail project. \n\n\nThe first meeting will take place on Aug. 6 at 6:00 at Polk County High School. The second meeting will take place Aug. 13 at 6:00 at Gramling United Methodist Church.

DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. She was the Black Bear and Furbearer Biologist for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission from 2007 to 2024 and was responsible for managing and conserving black bears and 17 furbearer species. She is now the Game Mammals and Surveys Supervisor. Colleen is a past-president of the North Carolina Chapter of The Wildlife Society (TWS) and is chair of TWS Wildlife Damage Management Working Group. DESCRIPTION:When: August 18\, 2024\, 9 am – 11 am \nMeet at: Bearwallow Mountain Trailhead \nUnplug\, unwind\, and reconnect with nature during this unique hike and outdoor yoga series on Bearwallow Mountain\, in partnership with Journey of the Microcosm. \nMonthly\, on the second to last Sunday of each month\, enjoy a one-mile hike with gentle incline (easy/moderate\, ~500’ elevation change) through the forest to the top of Bearwallow Mountain for panoramic views and an hour of yoga for all levels with certified Yoga instructor\, Kiersten Angelos\, founder of Journey of the Microcosm. Her creative instructions will be a perfect match for Bearwallow Mountain. \nPre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 12 participants. To register\, please RSVP below. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike/activity beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Bring your yoga mat\, props\, water\, and a snack. There are no facilities on site\, if needed\, please use the “facilitrees” using Leave No Trace principles. Please be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require in case of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Todd Elliott!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 24th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nTodd Elliott’s studies in biodiversity and interrelationships in nature have taken him to remote corners of the world to explore tropical rainforests\, deserts\, temperate forests\, beaches\, and high mountains on six continents. He is particularly interested in edible and medicinal mushrooms and plants and their importance to humans. Todd is an author of the Timber Press field guide Mushrooms of the Southeast and has published academic literature on various aspects of fungal ecology and taxonomy. Todd received his undergraduate degree in interpretive natural history from Warren Wilson College (USA) and his PhD in ecology from the University of New England (Australia). He enjoys sharing his research and knowledge of the natural world through presentations\, workshops\, and consultations for many different organizations in the US and abroad. DESCRIPTION:Date: August 27\, 2024 \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nLocation: Edneyville Library \nSpeaker: naturalist and educator\, Dan Lazar \nDuring the presentation\, Dan Lazar will discuss the animals and plants that were found in this region twenty thousand years ago.  He will also present evidence suggesting the former occurrence of now-extinct species such as Jefferson’s Ground Sloth and the American Mastodon.  The presentation will show images depicting ice age species still surviving in our Southern Mountains. \nDan Lazar served for many years as Director of Education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as Executive Director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum.  Mr. Lazar has a degree in Forest Biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse.  He has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist Certificate Program at the North Carolina Arboretum since 2005\, teaching a variety of classes including Ecology of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Geology of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Introduction to Insects\, Tree Identification\, and Meteorology.  Dan also has co-hosted “Nature News\,” a weekly radio program broadcast on WTZQ Hendersonville\, since 1993. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Edneyville Library’s calendar of events at this link. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: Moths and Why We Need to Think About Them Differently
DESCRIPTION:Rosy Maple Moth by Sharon Mammoser \nDate: September 10\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Sharon Mammoser\, naturalist\, photographer\, and writer \nWhen many people think about moths\, they probably don’t consider them beautiful\, very diverse\,  or worthy of protecting. But guess what? Moths outnumber butterflies TEN to one! Worldwide there are more than 160\,000 species of moths and about 17\,500 of butterflies. Moths and their caterpillars are the foundation of the food chain\, especially appealing to songbird parents who must feed their growing chicks. The diversity is shocking\, as are the colors\, shapes and adaptations. There are moths with fake eyes\, moths with perfect camouflage hiding secret colors\, moths that mimic other insects\, moths with long tails meant to outsmart bats\, moths that sleep in flowers\, moths with long proboscises that can reach deep into the nectary of flowers\, and moths with antennae so perfect you’d swear they were feathers. There are yellow and pink moths\, delicate green moths\, and moths with intricate designs that look hand-painted. \nIn this program we get an introduction to the amazing world of moths\, including a chance to see and learn about some of our more amazing local moths. We’ll also learn about their important place in the food web and how we can make our yards and outdoor spaces more moth friendly. \nNature is what nourishes Sharon’s soul and makes her heart sing with joy. After a childhood full of time spent exploring the wild lands around her home in western New York state\, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY at New Paltz. For many years\, Sharon shared nature with people of all ages in Minnesota\, Michigan\, Rhode Island\, Colorado\, and New York. In 2008\, she thru-hiked the 2175 mile Appalachian Trail\, an event that prompted her to move to western North Carolina\, which she now calls home. These days\, Sharon is focused on educating people about the plants and animals in their yards and how they can make their outdoor spaces more welcoming and beneficial to wildlife large and small. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems and a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2024. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 9AM – Noon at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  For the warmer months we will work from 9AM – Noon.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 4:00PM.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.
