SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Writing in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. We will begin with mindfulness meditation and some “forest bathing” with “texture gathering.”- Mattie Decker \nJournals and supplies will be provided\, however you may wish to bring your own. \nRegistration is limited to 12 participants. \nDonations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. A donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. Donations of $35 or more will include Conserving Carolina membership benefits. \n*Transfiguration Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \nDONATE HERE \nLEARN MORE ABOUT FOREST BATHING \nRSVP below.\nPlease reach out to drmattie.decker@gmail.com with any additional questions or concerns!

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: Creating an Ecologically Sustainable Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 9\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Lisa Wagner\, plant ecologist \nUsing plants in ways that create pleasing and attractive gardens can be as simple as using nature for your inspiration.  By including a diversity of native plants\, focusing on species that support native insects\, birds\, and other wildlife\, your landscape can become not only sustainable\, but attractive and easily maintained.  Learn how to choose plants that naturally work together using a plant community approach\, reflecting the aesthetic of natural Blue Ridge landscapes. \nLisa Wagner was the Director of Education at the South Carolina Botanical Garden\, Clemson University for over 20 years. A plant ecologist by background (Ph.D. in Botany\, UC Berkeley)\, she’s interested in native plants\, ecological gardening\, and promoting habitat restoration\, as well as encouraging engagement and creativity in mid-life and beyond. She continues to do presentations and consultations as a volunteer\, while continuing to be a keen gardener and committed writer about the natural world.  Her first blog\, Natural Gardening (www.naturalgardening.blogspot.com) reflects her observations about gardening and the natural world. Her second blog\, Places of the Spirit (www.placesofthespirit.blogspot.com) reflects sense of place and broader observations about being at home in the world. \nLisa and her husband Tim Spira spend roughly half the year in Asheville\, NC\, where they’ve surrounded their in-town house with native gardens. They spend the other half of the year at their cottage in Quebec\, where they’re converting a horticultural landscape to a more naturalistic and native one. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems and a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series - Historic Native American Paths and a Revolutionary Battle Site in the Landrum Area
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 16\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Dennis Chastain\, naturalist\, historian and outdoor writer \nTwo ancient Native American Paths\, later improved to wagon standards\, once intersected very near downtown Landrum. The Tugaloo Path\, which originated at the Cherokee town\, Tugalloo\, on the border between South Carolina and Georgia\, ran all the way to Virginia. The route took the path through the Town of Landrum and forded the North Pacolet River just beyond I-26. At this ford on the North Pacolet River (Earle’s Ford)\, a predawn raid on a Patriot camp by the notorious British commander\, James Dunlap\, resulted in a Patriot victory\, but it was a brutal assault and a story that should be heard by all so that it can be preserved and recalled for generations. \nThe historic Blackstock Road\, which ran all the way to Charleston\, SC\, intersected with the Tugaloo Path about 1/2 mile south of downtown Landrum\, and then on to Tryon\, NC\, and then to Hendersonville and beyond. Widely recognized as the  oldest road in Spartanburg County\, the Blackstock Road was developed in the 1800’s into a drovers road where thousands of cattle\, horses\, hogs\, turkeys and wagon loads of produce trudged through on their way to markets in Charleston. Dennis Chastain says\, “The stories of these two ancient Native American paths and the battle of Earle’s Ford are largely untold stories. The way to preserve the legacy of these old stories is for folks to learn them and pass them along to the next generation.” \nDennis is an award-winning outdoor writer\, interpretive naturalist\, historian\, and modern-day explorer. He has been writing feature articles for South Carolina Wildlife magazine and other outdoor publications for more than twenty years. As you’ll soon discover\, by using his skills as a naturalist and his love of cultural history\, Dennis has a unique way of interpreting what can be seen when exploring the local mountains. \nWe acknowledge that though we are the current stewards\, the land where we live and work is stolen land. Homeland of the Cherokee\, the Yuchi\, and the Catawba people\, acquired through genocide and forced removal. Chastain is not a part of the Cherokee community but will share his knowledge on Cherokee history from his years of research and findings.  \n \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series: A screening and discussion of the new\, local documentary\, "Nature’s Wisdom Thru Native Eyes"
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 20\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: David Weintraub\, award-winning documentary filmmaker and executive director of the Center for Cultural Preservation \nWhen storytelling\, native wisdom and nature’s intelligence converge\, something beautiful can arise.  That’s the theme of this new film that documents the Cherokees connection to nature. \nAccording to Cherokee elder\, storyteller and mask-maker Davy Arch\, “We were trying to stay connected to the natural world because we realized that everything that was connected to it thrived\, so we understood that if we would stay connected to it\, we would be prosperous as well.” Arch is one of several native elders featured in the film discussing how for over 10\,000 years storytelling connected the tribe to nature and to each other\, the use of medicinal plants\, and how the native approach that focuses finding connections can help all of us heal our broken relationship with the living world. \nFilm Director David Weintraub elaborates that what struck him most of all while working with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and half a dozen other native tribes is their sophisticated approach in seeing the connections between history\, culture and nature.  “In the western tradition\, humans are considered to be at the top of the hierarchy\, with animals and plants far below.  But native people instead believe that since humans were the last to come and have the least experience on how to live\, they must turn to plants and animals as their teachers.  By looking at the living world that way\, it transforms us and how we view the living world.  Instead of nature being our conquest\, it becomes our partner.” \nNature’s Wisdom integrates native storytelling and philosophy with cutting edge science that’s now discovering that what native people have been saying about the intelligence of nature for thousands of years is actually true!  According to Weintraub\, “Recent research confirms that trees have a highly intelligent way of communicating with each other\, sharing resources and warning each other of potential hazards.  Many animals use tools\, and communicate with each other in ways that we never thought possible before.  And yet native stories and wisdom has observed these behaviors for thousands of generations.” \nWe acknowledge that though we are the current stewards\, the land where we live and work is stolen land. Homeland of the Cherokee\, the Yuchi\, and the Catawba people\, acquired through genocide and forced removal. Weintraub is not a part of the Cherokee community but will share the knowledge he has gained by creating this documentary and through interviews with native people\, helping to preserve their culture and history.  \n*Walnut Creek Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \n \nThe Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Preserve. \n*Walnut Creek Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Hike with Blue Ridge Humane Society!
DESCRIPTION:Where: Bearwallow Mountain \nMeet: Bearwallow Mountain Trailhead\, Bearwallow Mountain Road \nTime: 11:00 a.m. \nWhat to expect: 2–mile\, easy/moderate; trail type-loop; elevation change ~500′ \n  \nJoin Conserving Carolina & Blue Ridge Humane Society for a hike & \nwalk an adoptable dog!\nHikers\, and their dogs\, are invited to join Conserving Carolina and Blue Ridge Humane Society (BRHS) on Wednesday\, April 24th at 11 a.m. for an approximately 2-mile hike up Bearwallow Mounatain. Conserving Carolina’s Community Engagement Director\, Pam Torlina\, will lead the hike from the trail head off of Bearwallow Mountain Road. \nThis is a great opportunity to give an adoptable dog a break from the Adoption Center and allow them to enjoy a nice\, socializing walk in the outdoors. There is a limit to the number of dogs that can come from BRHS\, so if you’re interested in walking a dog\, please contact Cameron Davis\, Volunteer Manager for BRHS by Monday\, April 1st to arrange a time for training orientation\, pairing with the appropriate dog\, and to sign a volunteer waiver. Cameron can be reached at\, volunteer@blueridgehumane.org. Participants may also bring their own dog on the hike so long as they are kept on leash and do not have any nose-to-nose meetings with the BRHS dogs. If bringing your own dog\, there is no need to go through orientation at BRHS. \nThe approximately 2-mile easy/moderate\, loop hike begins by ascending Bearwallow Mountain\, gaining just over 500’ in elevation in approximately 1 mile. The trail traverses through a maturing hardwood forest before opening up to a grassy meadow near the mountain’s summit at 4\,232 feet above sea level. Here\, hikers will enjoy a nearly 280° panoramic view of the surrounding mountains with views that include Mt. Mitchell and Mt. Pisgah. This breathtaking vista also includes a birds-eye view of Hickory Nut Gorge\, downtown Hendersonville\, and the high country of South Carolina. A historic fire lookout tower occupies the summit\, as do grazing cattle who call the mountaintop home. \nAfter taking in the sights and enjoying a little break and snack near the summit of the mountain\, hikers and their dogs will complete the loop by returning to the trailhead by traveling a gravel service road on the property. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. To register\, please RSVP below. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. Hikers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and dogs must be on a leash and accustomed to being around many other dogs. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water (don’t forget snacks for your pooch!). Treat bags will be provided. Please be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by e-mail\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, by 8 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website event or Facebook page to see if the hike will take place. \nThe Blue Ridge Humane Society\, Inc.\, is a 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization started in 1950 and dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of life for animals in Henderson County and our neighboring communities. BRHS cares for pets awaiting adoption at the Adoption Center; offers low-cost vaccine clinics\, animal education programs\, pet training classes\, and youth education and projects; coordinates community pet food assistance\, emergency vet assistance\, and the Spay Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP)\, which is a collaboration with Henderson County\, the City of Hendersonville\, and the Henderson County Animal Services Center. If you believe in our cause\, consider donating or learning how to volunteer by visiting the Blue Ridge Humane Society’s website at www.blueridgehumane.org or call (828) 692-2639. \nFor more information contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org.
