Where the road splits\, take the first left onto Balfour Rd. You will pass Berkeley Ball Park on the left\, and a Kimberly Clark truck entrance on the right. After you pass the truck entrance\, turn right and arrive at the parking lot. Look for a Conserving Carolina yard sign to guide you to the parking area! \n  \nDescription: The Oklawaha Greenway provides a green recreational space for the City of Hendersonville and we want to make sure it stays clear of litter! We will clean up litter along Conserving Carolina’s two-mile Adopt-a-Greenway section (Berkely Ball Park to N. Main crossing). Volunteers must be able to walk moderate distances (~3-miles) and may need to bend over to pick up trash. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Highway 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. Blending science\, ecology\, and storytelling\, it examines how bioluminescence works\, why the Southern Appalachian region supports such extraordinary biodiversity\, and how healthy forests\, clean water\, and true darkness are essential to these species’ survival. From the synchronized flashes of fireflies to the eerie glow of foxfire and glowworms hidden in Appalachian ravines\, the program highlights both the wonder and fragility of these nighttime ecosystems while emphasizing the importance of conservation in protecting not only biodiversity\, but also opportunities for awe and human connection with the natural world. \nPam Torlina is a biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator with more than 30 years of experience connecting people to the natural world. She has been with Conserving Carolina for 20 years\, where she shares her passion for the rich biodiversity of western North Carolina through educational programs focused on native plants\, wildlife\, ecology\, and conservation. \nThroughout her career\, Pam has worked with organizations including the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve in Ontario\, Canada. DESCRIPTION:Restoring natural floodplains offers transformative benefits for both communities and ecosystems. Conserving Carolina’s Restoration Manager\, Wood Robinson\, will highlight Conserving Carolina’s innovative floodplain restoration projects along the French Broad River\, focusing on their important role in mitigating flood risks\, improving biodiversity\, and enhancing water quality. Using real-world examples\, such as the Pleasant Grove and Kings Bridge restorations\, we’ll explore strategies to restore natural functions to floodplains and build resilience against extreme weather events like Tropical Storm Helene. Attendees will gain insights into effective restoration techniques\, the power of community partnerships\, and the importance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge. Join us to learn how these projects serve as a model for creating thriving\, sustainable landscapes that support both people and nature. \nOriginally from Greensboro\, Wood graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2013 with a BS in environmental science. Though his original plans pointed toward a career in glacial hydroclimatology\, he took the scenic route – spending the next decade on tour with his band\, watching the world pass by through van windows\, bright lights\, and thick smoke. When the music settled down he found his way back to the natural sciences through land protection work at a land trust in Utah. Fulfilling as the American West proved to be\, the Old North State eventually called him home\, and in 2026 he joined Conserving Carolina. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and The Local Table curated by Stump Farms. DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: AllTrails.com \nWhere: Graveyard Fields to the upper falls \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.3–miles\, moderately strenuous; trail type-lollipop \nElevation gain: 416′ \nApproximately 1 hour drive \nJoin us for a beautiful hike through the high-elevation landscape of Graveyard Fields\, where open meadows\, mountain streams\, and surrounding peaks create a uniquely scenic setting. We’ll follow the Graveyard Fields Loop to the Upper Falls Trail\, winding through a scenic forest alongside Yellowstone Prong creek to the Upper Falls\, a magnificent cascade. We’ll then retrace our steps before continuing along the loop to Second Falls\, enjoying cascading water\, rhododendron-lined trails\, and the natural beauty of this special landscape along the Blue Ridge Parkway. \nHikers should expect a few creek crossings\, and waterproof boots are recommended. There will be plenty of great spots for photos\, and we’re hoping to catch some beautiful fall color along the way! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants and gardening?  Join us Thursdays from 9 am –  11am at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler in October we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants and gardening?  Join us Thursdays from 9 am –  11am at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler in October we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: John Rock
DESCRIPTION:Where: John Rock \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 4.8–miles\, strenuous; trail type-loop \nElevation gain: 1\,062′ \nApproximately 50 minute drive \nJoin us for a beautiful hike through Pisgah National Forest on the John Rock Loop Trail. The trail winds alongside streams\, through lush rhododendron and hardwood forests\, climbing to the expansive granite face of John Rock. From the overlook\, hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of Looking Glass Rock\, Pilot Mountain\, and the surrounding mountains…hopefully in their autumn glory! \nThis fairly challenging loop offers a wonderful mix of forests\, flowing water\, mountain scenery\, and one of Pisgah’s most impressive viewpoints. Hikers should be prepared for a sustained climb\, stream crossings\, and uneven\, rocky terrain. Please use caution near the exposed rock face\, where steep drop-offs are present. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, October 2\, 2026.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 7:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ to see if the hike will take place. Please also remember to bring any medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). Hike leaders will carry a first aid kit; however\, it may not contain specific medication for your individual needs. \nBefore each hike\, you will be asked to sign a waiver form. For your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. This schedule is subject to change.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Highway 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Nature Preserve Stewards\nJoin us for our weekly Nature Preserve Stewards workday. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Little River Wetlands – Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. An email with details of the workday\, including meeting place\, will be sent to all who have registered by Friday of the preceding week.\nIn the case of a month with five Wednesdays\, we will not have a formal workday.  Volunteers are encouraged to visit and monitor any of the sites we’ve worked in together in the past.  Please update our projects in iNaturalist (contact Torry@conservingcarolina.org for details) with any interesting observations.  You can log your time spent by emailing mary@conservingcarolina.org.\n\n\n\nWhat to expect:\nA typical day might include: \n\nPulling weeds\nErosion control\nPlanting and tending trees and other plants\nMaking and recording scientific observations\nCreating habitat for all kinds of animals\nMaintaining artificial habitats (bird and bat boxes\, etc.)\nOther tasks as conditions warrant.\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\nAppropriate clothing for four hours in nature: close-toed shoes\, long pants\, and shirt sleeves. Layers are recommended as the conditions will likely change during the day.\nSunscreen\, hat\, or other personal shade device\nLunch\, snacks\, drinking water\nAny medications you may need\n\nEmail Torry at torry@conservingcarolina.org with questions. \n
