DESCRIPTION:Where: Raven Cliff Falls \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.9–miles\, moderate; trail type-out and back \nElevation gain: 738′ \nApproximately 40 minute drive \n**There is a State Park trail access fee of $3 per adult\, but if you’re a SC senior\, the fee if $1.50. PLEASE BRING CASH IN THE EXACT AMOUNT for yourself on the day of the hike. \nJoin us for a scenic hike to Raven Cliff Falls\, one of the Upstate’s most spectacular waterfalls! We’ll wind through a beautiful forest in the Matthews Creek watershed\, enjoying lush vegetation\, mountain views\, and the sights and sounds of the surrounding forest before reaching a viewing platform to see the falls. Raven Cliff Falls plunges an estimated 420 feet from Raven Cliff Mountain along the Blue Ridge Escarpment\, where the Blue Ridge Mountains drop dramatically toward the Piedmont below. Named for the ravens that nest in the high cliffs around the falls\, Raven Cliff Falls is one of South Carolina’s most scenic waterfalls! Come explore this popular trail and experience the beauty of the Southern Appalachians along the way! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Trade St.\, Tryon\, NC 28782 \nJoin us for a free community movie night – a collaboration of Conserving Carolina\, The Gardening For Life Project\, and the Congregational Church\, UCC in Tryon. \nFantastic Fungi is a descriptive time-lapse journey about the magical\, mysterious and medicinal world of fungi and their power to heal\, sustain and contribute to the regeneration of life on Earth that began 3.5 billion years ago. \nThis documentary takes viewers into the hidden world of fungi through stunning time-lapse photography\, interviews with mycologists\, ecologists\, physicians\, and other experts\, and exploration of the remarkable networks of fungal mycelium beneath our feet. The film looks at fungi’s roles in ecosystems\, their relationships with plants\, their potential applications in medicine and environmental restoration\, and the ways fungi can help us rethink our relationship with the natural world. \nOne of the film’s biggest strengths is making the invisible visible. Much of a fungus exists as microscopic or threadlike mycelium underground or within decaying material; the mushroom is simply the reproductive structure that we happen to notice. The film uses beautiful time-lapse imagery to reveal this hidden world and encourage viewers to think about forests and soils as interconnected living systems. \nWhy are fungi so important? \n1. They are nature’s recyclers.Fungi are among the most important decomposers on Earth. They break down dead plants\, wood\, leaves\, and other organic material\, releasing nutrients such as carbon\, nitrogen\, and phosphorus back into ecosystems where they can be used again. Fungi are particularly good at breaking down tough compounds such as cellulose and lignin. \n2. They help plants get what they need.Many plants form partnerships with fungi called mycorrhizae. Fungal threads extend far beyond plant roots and can help plants obtain water and nutrients from the soil. In return\, the plant provides the fungus with sugars produced through photosynthesis. An estimated 80–90% of plant species have mycorrhizal partners. \n3. They are fundamental to healthy forests.Fungal networks are an important part of the soil food web and influence nutrient cycling\, plant productivity\, decomposition\, and carbon storage. Recent research continues to demonstrate just how important fungal communities are to the functioning of forest and soil ecosystems. \n4. They connect plants and ecosystems.Mycorrhizal fungi create extensive networks of hyphae throughout soil. These networks can connect plants and facilitate the movement of nutrients and carbon. Fantastic Fungi emphasizes this interconnectedness\, including the work of forest ecologist Suzanne Simard on relationships among trees and fungal networks. \n5. They influence the carbon cycle.Fungi both decompose organic matter and contribute to the formation and storage of organic carbon in soils. Their activity can therefore influence how carbon moves between living organisms\, soil\, and the atmosphere. \n6. They support wildlife.Fungi aren’t just important to plants. They are food for insects\, other invertebrates\, mammals\, and microorganisms\, making them an important part of food webs. \n7. They have enormous importance to humans.Fungi provide us with food\, fermentation\, medicines\, and compounds that have inspired medical research. The film explores the potential of fungi in medicine and human health\, although some of the film’s more forward-looking claims are best viewed as areas of research rather than established treatments. \n8. They may help us address environmental problems.Researchers are investigating fungi for applications such as breaking down pollutants\, restoring degraded environments\, and developing sustainable materials. Where the road splits\, take the first left onto Balfour Rd. You will pass Berkeley Ball Park on the left\, and a Kimberly Clark truck entrance on the right. After you pass the truck entrance\, turn right and arrive at the parking lot. Look for a Conserving Carolina yard sign to guide you to the parking area! \n  \nDescription: The Oklawaha Greenway provides a green recreational space for the City of Hendersonville and we want to make sure it stays clear of litter! We will clean up litter along Conserving Carolina’s two-mile Adopt-a-Greenway section (Berkely Ball Park to N. Main crossing). Volunteers must be able to walk moderate distances (~3-miles) and may need to bend over to pick up trash. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. Blending science\, ecology\, and storytelling\, it examines how bioluminescence works\, why the Southern Appalachian region supports such extraordinary biodiversity\, and how healthy forests\, clean water\, and true darkness are essential to these species’ survival. From the synchronized flashes of fireflies to the eerie glow of foxfire and glowworms hidden in Appalachian ravines\, the program highlights both the wonder and fragility of these nighttime ecosystems while emphasizing the importance of conservation in protecting not only biodiversity\, but also opportunities for awe and human connection with the natural world. \nPam Torlina is a biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator with more than 30 years of experience connecting people to the natural world. She has been with Conserving Carolina for 20 years\, where she shares her passion for the rich biodiversity of western North Carolina through educational programs focused on native plants\, wildlife\, ecology\, and conservation. \nThroughout her career\, Pam has worked with organizations including the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve in Ontario\, Canada. Conserving Carolina’s Restoration Manager\, Wood Robinson\, will highlight Conserving Carolina’s innovative floodplain restoration projects along the French Broad River\, focusing on their important role in mitigating flood risks\, improving biodiversity\, and enhancing water quality. Using real-world examples\, such as the Pleasant Grove and Kings Bridge restorations\, we’ll explore strategies to restore natural functions to floodplains and build resilience against extreme weather events like Tropical Storm Helene. Attendees will gain insights into effective restoration techniques\, the power of community partnerships\, and the importance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge. Join us to learn how these projects serve as a model for creating thriving\, sustainable landscapes that support both people and nature. \nOriginally from Greensboro\, Wood graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2013 with a BS in environmental science. Though his original plans pointed toward a career in glacial hydroclimatology\, he took the scenic route – spending the next decade on tour with his band\, watching the world pass by through van windows\, bright lights\, and thick smoke. When the music settled down he found his way back to the natural sciences through land protection work at a land trust in Utah. Fulfilling as the American West proved to be\, the Old North State eventually called him home\, and in 2026 he joined Conserving Carolina. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and The Local Table curated by Stump Farms. DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: AllTrails.com \nWhere: Graveyard Fields to the upper falls \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.3–miles\, moderately strenuous; trail type-lollipop \nElevation gain: 416′ \nApproximately 1 hour drive \nJoin us for a beautiful hike through the high-elevation landscape of Graveyard Fields\, where open meadows\, mountain streams\, and surrounding peaks create a uniquely scenic setting. We’ll follow the Graveyard Fields Loop to the Upper Falls Trail\, winding through a scenic forest alongside Yellowstone Prong creek to the Upper Falls\, a magnificent cascade. We’ll then retrace our steps before continuing along the loop to Second Falls\, enjoying cascading water\, rhododendron-lined trails\, and the natural beauty of this special landscape along the Blue Ridge Parkway. \nHikers should expect a few creek crossings\, and waterproof boots are recommended. There will be plenty of great spots for photos\, and we’re hoping to catch some beautiful fall color along the way! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Highway 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. He is the Executive Director of Earthshine Nature Programs. DESCRIPTION:Nature Preserve Stewards\nJoin us for our weekly Nature Preserve Stewards workday. You will be working with Conserving Carolina Habitat Restoration staff in a caring environment focused on safety and wellness\, learning and camaraderie\, on the land. Volunteers will not be asked to handle any chemicals or herbicides or to operate any fossil fuel-powered equipment. \nWhere and When\n\nWeekly\, rain\, or shine\, with exceptions for extreme weather\nAll workdays will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a well-earned break in between\nFeel free to choose specific days or pledge yourself to a steady regime as best suits you.\n\n\n\n\nFirst Wednesday: Pleasant Grove – Etowah\, Henderson County\nSecond Wednesday: Mouth of Mud Creek – Mills River/Arden\, Henderson County\nThird Wednesday: Florence Nature Preserve – Gerton\, Henderson/Buncombe Counties\nFourth Wednesday: Land Manager’s choice of Preserve\, location – to be published in each month’s volunteer newsletter and online calendar. This will be a chance to see some neat corners of the world\, with exclusive access. The ecology of the land is tended to\, which benefits plants\, insects\, birds\, and other animals living on the land. The result is a beautiful park that is protected in perpetuity. \nKarly Michel is the Operations Director at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary (CMS)\, a conservation burial ground in Mills River\, NC. CMS is a place for natural burials of humans and their beloved pets\, or cremated and aquamated remains. With over 30 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator\, Pam has dedicated two decades to advancing the Conservancy’s mission in the Carolinas. DESCRIPTION:Where: John Rock \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 4.8–miles\, strenuous; trail type-loop \nElevation gain: 1\,062′ \nApproximately 50 minute drive \nJoin us for a beautiful hike through Pisgah National Forest on the John Rock Loop Trail. The trail winds alongside streams\, through lush rhododendron and hardwood forests\, climbing to the expansive granite face of John Rock. From the overlook\, hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of Looking Glass Rock\, Pilot Mountain\, and the surrounding mountains…hopefully in their autumn glory! \nThis fairly challenging loop offers a wonderful mix of forests\, flowing water\, mountain scenery\, and one of Pisgah’s most impressive viewpoints. Hikers should be prepared for a sustained climb\, stream crossings\, and uneven\, rocky terrain. Please use caution near the exposed rock face\, where steep drop-offs are present. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, October 2\, 2026.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 7:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ to see if the hike will take place.
