DESCRIPTION:Date: July 8\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Saluda Library \nSpeaker: Kristin Cozza\, Trails and Greenways Manager for Conserving Carolina \nConserving Carolina has permanently protected over 49\,000 acres of forest\, farmland\, wetlands and other significant landscapes in our service area which includes Polk County.  Did you know that we also build trails and work with local communities to plan greenways?  Kristin Cozza\, Trails and Greenways Manager for Conserving Carolina will give an overview of Conserving Carolina’s existing trail and greenway projects and provide an update on our ongoing efforts to promote public access to the special places we help to protect including our role in advancing greenway projects across the region. \nAs the Trails and Greenways Manager\, Kristin supports Conserving Carolina’s efforts to build new public access trails and greenways with a particular focus on the Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail and the Saluda Grade Trail.  Kristin has called WNC home for over 20 years and is very grateful to live and work in such a beautiful place.  She has worked as a watershed planner for the State of NC\, in consulting for Confluence Engineering and Headwaters Engineering and for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.  Kristin has a BA from the University of Virginia in Environmental Science and Masters’ degrees in Public Policy and Environmental Management from Duke University.  In her free time\, she stays busy biking and gardening. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Green Drinks: How Are Our River Critters Post-Helene and How Can We Help Them?
DESCRIPTION:Join Luke Etchinson\, Aquatic Wildlife Diversity Coordinator at N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission\, for a dive into the current status of mussels\, fishes\, crayfishes\, and their habitats in the French Broad River watershed following Helene. Luke will be discussing the impacts of loss of habitat on our rivers and what is being done to protect and restore this habitat. \nLuke Etchison is a river conservation biologist for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and Past-President of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. He has been with the NCWRC since 2016 and is responsible for conservation and monitoring of mussels\, crayfishes\, native fishes\, and aquatic snails in the New\, Savannah\, Little Tennessee\, Hiwassee\, French Broad\, and Watauga watersheds in NC. Luke received a B.S. in Aquatic and Fisheries Biology\, M.S. in Aquatic Biology\, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Ball State University\, where he was involved in research on everything aquatic from insects to fishes. His dissertation focused on large river fish communities and their response to habitat change over time. SUMMARY:Pleasant Grove Preserve  Bradford Pear Removal & Treatment
DESCRIPTION:In the Summer of 2023 Conserving Carolina completed a large floodplain and stream restoration project along the French Broad River at the Pleasant Grove Preserve. The project restored an eroded stream (Little Willow Creek)\, stabilized banks along the French Broad River\, and created floodplain\, wetland\, and pollinator habitat. In order to protect the newly created habitats\, maintenance and management activities need to occur regularly. \nWe will be protecting the floodplain and wetland habitats by focusing on the removal of Bradford Pear\, a non-native invasive plant species. We will remove these trees and saplings via the “cut & dab” method: cutting the trees at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface. This work is critical to maintain the high-quality habitat created during the restoration. We will be hiking a short distance across moderate terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided\, but personal cutting tools such as handsaws\, Sawzalls\, and small chainsaws are welcome. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. You will get dirty\, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing. Light clothing is recommended in the floodplain\, along with hats\, sunscreen\, insect repellent\, work shoes or boots\, and sunglasses. DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nThis will be the first of our weekly garden workdays\, and this time we’ll be focusing on mulching and weeding to get the space ready for native plants to thrive.  The pollinators are already enjoying the many native plants in the garden! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: The Impact of Bacteria on Interactions Between Plants and Pollinators - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 15\, 2025 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Dr. Grace Freundlich\, Assistant Professor at Furman University \nPlant-pollinator interactions are of vital importance to ecosystem functioning and a viable human civilization. To date\, we’ve extensively studied how pollinators select for certain flowering plants and how these preferences shape floral morphology. For example\, pollinating flies preferentially select flowers with yellow or white flowers\, while birds visit bright red flowers with deep corollas\, and bees prefer to visit purple-colored flowers (Reverté et al. 2016). While pollinators select for various traits in flowers\, we have failed to fully identify how floral microbes influence plant-pollinator interactions. \nWithin the past 20 years\, we’ve documented the presence of various floral bacteria and yeasts that reside on petals\, in nectar\, and in pollen and how these communities differ across certain regions and flower species (Vannette 2020) (Burgess and Schaeffer 2022). Additionally\, we’ve noted how certain groups of microbes can influence pollinator behavior when they are present in flowers (Schaeffer et al. 2017; Schaeffer et al. 2019). However\, we have not\, to Dr. Freundlich’s knowledge\, taken the time to identify specific physiological and morphological features that may impact how these communities are shaped inside of these flowers. In this presentation\, Dr. Freundlich will discuss the work that she and her students have done addressing this question with a range of techniques\, including imaging the surface of floral structures and quantifying differences in visitation rates among common pollinator friendly plants in the Upstate. \nDr. Freundlich has always been interested in plant defense and the strategies they utilize. As an undergraduate at Dickinson College\, she studied how carbon dioxide enrichment impacted seagrass defenses. Soon after graduation\, she work at the Ohio State University to assess which genes conferred resistance in soybean against soybean cyst nematodes. After this experience\, she completed her Ph.D. studying how plant-plant communication impacts plant defense strategies in agricultural settings and soon moved to Utah State University for her postdoctoral position. In this post\, she investigated how herbivore-induced shifts in floral chemistry alter floral microbe communities and pollinator visitation. Additionally\, Dr. Freundlich received a National Science Foundation award to study how floral bacteria and yeast alter floral trait evolution in the model plant Brassica rapa. SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: An Introduction to Backyard Moths of the Carolinas
DESCRIPTION:Luna Moth by Sharon Mammoser \nDate: July 15\, 2025 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: David Ahrenholz \nNative giant silkworm and hawk moths are our largest North American insects\, but they go largely un-noticed. Dr. Ahrenholz presents backyard photographs from his Landrum home to illustrate the lives of these beautiful but rather secretive creatures. \nDr. Ahrenholz began his interest in butterflies and moths as a child in Iowa. He taught himself photography because family and friends were not interested in dead insect specimens. After medical school he continued his passion for nature photography\, photographing butterflies across the US and tropical South America. His photographs captured new species and led to an appointment as a Research Associate in the Entomology Department at the Smithsonian. He has pursued a 25-year project with the museum to document the butterflies of Ecuador in photographs and by collecting specimens. SUMMARY:Pleasant Grove Preserve Bradford Pear Removal & Treatment
DESCRIPTION:In the Summer of 2023 Conserving Carolina completed a large floodplain and stream restoration project along the French Broad River at the Pleasant Grove Preserve. The project restored an eroded stream (Little Willow Creek)\, stabilized banks along the French Broad River\, and created floodplain\, wetland\, and pollinator habitat. In order to protect the newly created habitats\, maintenance and management activities need to occur regularly. \nWe will be protecting the floodplain and wetland habitats by focusing on the removal of Bradford Pear\, a non-native invasive plant species. We will remove these trees and saplings via the “cut & dab” method: cutting the trees at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface. This work is critical to maintain the high-quality habitat created during the restoration. We will be hiking a short distance across moderate terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided\, but personal cutting tools such as handsaws\, Sawzalls\, and small chainsaws are welcome. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. You will get dirty\, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing. Light clothing is recommended in the floodplain\, along with hats\, sunscreen\, insect repellent\, work shoes or boots\, and sunglasses. DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are invited to help clean up trash with Conserving Carolina\, French Broad Paddle Trail Manager\, Jack Henderson\, and other members of MountainTrue’s French Broad Riverkeeper team. \nThe clean-up will be boat-based and focus on the French Broad River in Transylvania County between Island Ford River Access and Morrow Landing. \nMountainTrue can provide canoes (with paddles and PFDs) to volunteers with previous paddling experience\, but attendees are otherwise requested to bring their own boats. MountainTrue will also provide gloves\, trash bags\, a dumpster for trash removal\, and a shuttle to the put-in. \nIf you need to borrow a boat from MountainTrue\, please use the boat request form. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. DESCRIPTION:Date: July 24\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Green River Library \nSpeakers: Olga Katić \nJoin Olga\, of Mushroom Mountain\, for an engaging journey into the underground world of terrestrial fungi\, with a spotlight on Stropharia rugosoannulata—the mighty King Stropharia. Discover how mushrooms act as ecosystem engineers\, transforming woody debris and organic matter into rich\, fertile soil. This lecture explores the essential role of saprophytic fungi in building soil structure\, retaining moisture\, supporting plant life\, and even cleaning up toxins. You’ll also learn about practical applications in permaculture\, gardening\, and habitat restoration using mushrooms like King Stropharia. Whether you’re a mycophile\, a conservationist\, or just fungi-curious\, this talk will leave you seeing soil in a whole new light. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. This program was accepted by Health Departments of 7 states\, and counting\, and also endorsed by the FDA. SUMMARY:Lower Green River Clean-up with MountainTrue
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be joining Green Riverkeeper with MountainTrue to Clean the Lower Green! \nWe will meet at the Green Riverkeeper Office in Saluda\, NC at 10 am and carpool down to the river. The exact clean-up location will be announced in an email closer to the event date. \nThis event will be land and river-based. If you want to be on the river\, please plan to bring your own boat (MountainTrue is not providing boats for loan for this event) and appropriate river gear (pfd\, helmet\, paddles etc). \nPlease wear closed-toe shoes\, weather-appropriate attire (including things you don’t mind getting wet). Bring drinking water\, lunch/snacks\, and perhaps a change of clothes for afterward. We will have plenty of trash bags and gloves for use\, along with some hand tools such as shovels\, loppers\, etc.; however\, feel free to bring your own if you would like. \nAll volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 9am –  12pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.
