DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. We will explore best practices for tree care\, focusing on how these can enhance tree health and reduce risk\, as well as how poor tree management can contribute to raising risk and decline. \nThere will be an optional walk to look at trees in the field after the presentation for those that are interested in participating. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. \nJason Llano is a Board Certified Master Arborist and the owner of Optimal Arboriculture. He holds both Tree Risk Assessment and Prescription Pruning Qualifications from the International Society of Arboriculture. This program will feature LIVE FISH\, examples of some of the beautiful species living in our area streams and rivers\, so bring the kids too! \nKevin Kubach (20 years with SCDNR) and Rachel Moore (3 years) are biologists with the Statewide Freshwater Research Program of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources\, based in Clemson. Though the trail is ranked difficult\, this will be a wildflower walk\, not a hike\, so plan to go short distances\, stopping to admire flowers. We probably won’t walk the full 5-miles of the trail\, but want you to be prepared\, if we do. We will share tips about how to identify these flowers and some of the unique adaptations they’ve evolved to ensure pollination. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Using real-world examples\, such as the Pleasant Grove and Kings Bridge restorations\, we’ll explore strategies to restore natural functions to floodplains and build resilience against extreme weather events like Tropical Storm Helene. Attendees will gain insights into effective restoration techniques\, the power of community partnerships\, and the importance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge. Join us to learn how these projects serve as a model for creating thriving\, sustainable landscapes that support both people and nature. \nTorlina received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of South Carolina Upstate and has been working with the Conservancy for nearly 19 years. She has more than 30 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 9am –  12pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

DESCRIPTION:The post-World War II of the 40’s and 50’s shifted the food paradigm from local to high-yield crops and grocery stores. Steeped in an economy of conveniences\, this system provides on demand food\, but has shown devastating impacts on environment\, health\, and community. Could a shift back to local be the answer to these 3 top issues faced today? \nJoin us for a discussion entitled\, “Localization; the answer to more than just the environmental crisis?” with Tia Wackerhagen\, RN\, BSN\, Food and Agriculture Committee Co-chair\, and member of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments. \nTia is a registered nurse for Roof Above in Charlotte North Carolina\, serving individuals who have recently come out of chronic homelessness. She is passionate about equality not only in health care\, but in food systems. To further strengthen this passion\, Tia is pursuing her doctorate in nursing practice in family nurse practitioner specialty at East Carolina University. She serves as co-chair for the Alliance for Healthy Nurses food and agriculture committee. \n\n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Date: May 13\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Mark Ray\, NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) Engagement Program Specialist \nThanks to conservation efforts\, black bears have made a dramatic comeback in North Carolina. As bears expand into areas with suitable habitat\, it is important for communities to learn how to coexist with them. Living with bears is part of life in North Carolina. \nMark has been an advocate outdoorsman his entire life\, being a native of the NC Appalachian Mountains. His desire to extend his outdoors love and knowledge led him to employment with the NCWRC as an Enforcement Officer in March of 2007. He has worked from Manteo to Murphy with NCWRC Agency and has developed an even greater love for this state and its wildlife resources. He currently lives in Macon County with his wife/best friend.  As of September 2016\, he has worked as an educator\, coordinator\, and program developer with the NCWRC education division.
