DESCRIPTION:Photo by Diane Carr/AllTrails.com \nWhere: Holmes Educational State Forest \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.9  miles\, moderate/strenuous; trail type – lollipop \nElevation gain: 767′ \nApproximately 20 minute drive \nHikers will follow the Short Cut trail starting in the valley of Crab Creek. After following the Short Cut trail for a short distance the group will take the Forest Demonstration trail with opportunities to enjoy the beautiful forest\, a small pond\, and views of the surrounding area. The trail ascends approximately 767′ before descending back down the mountain\, making a loop in the 235 acre Forest. \n[Except from their website] Holmes Educational State Forest has been providing the citizens of North Carolina a living outdoor classroom where visitors of all ages can learn about the local natural forest environment since 1977. The forest\, which started out as a nursery developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps\, has now become one of seven educational state forests located throughout the state. The land along Crab Creek Road was obtained by the state in the mid-1930’s to provide North Carolina landowners White pine and Yellow poplar seedlings. By the late 1960’s the state moved the nursery to Avery County and developed Holmes has a small state forest. Since then\, the forest has grown into a diverse woodscape that includes many other plant species from herbs on the forest floor to towering forest trees. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, November 1\, 2024.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m.\, unless otherwise specified. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ and/or Facebook page to see if the hike will take place. Please also remember to bring any medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). Hike leaders will carry a first aid kit; however\, it may not contain specific medication for your individual needs. \nBefore each hike\, you will be asked to sign a waiver form. DESCRIPTION:December 7th 10:00 – 2:00 “Writing in Nature” \nWhere:  Walnut Creek Preserve\, 179 Wood Thrush Lane\, Mill Spring\, NC 28756 \nWhat:  “Writing in Nature” includes an experience of Shinrin Yoku\, known as “Forest Bathing” with Mattie Decker\, ANFT certified guide and mindfulness teacher.  We gather in a circle\, with mindfulness meditation before embarking into the forest to “find our spot”\, our tree\, or place we are drawn to sit and write. Afterward there are refreshments shared\, as we tell about our experiences\, often reading what we’ve written. Participants are also encouraged to bring writing they are working on\, or journals to continue projects they are midst. There are always surprises\, and amazement in how the medicine of the forest provides us what is uniquely needed for each of us. For new writers\, or those who are writers\, this experience offers a dimension of awakening to the deep relationship we each have in Nature. \nDirections: How to Get to Walnut Creek Preserve \nPlease note that the preserve is open to the public only by invitation for educational events. Go 1 mile to the intersection with Big Level Road; turn left\, go 0.2 miles and take the first right onto Aden Green Road. Follow Aden Green for 0.4 mile and turn left on Wood Thrush Lane and into Walnut Creek Preserve. Take the first left onto Conservatory Lane\, which takes you to the parking area for the nature center on the right. \nDirections from Hendersonville \nGo east on I-26 for 18 miles. Take exit 67 from I-26 (exit for Rutherfordton\, Columbus\, Tryon\, etc.)\, and then take the left fork of the exit (Highway 74) toward Forest City and Charlotte. Take the first exit off of Highway 74 (Exit 163) to Mill Spring. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp (you are on Highway 108). Go 3 miles to blinking light at Highway 9. Turn left (north) toward Lake Lure. \nGo 5 miles on Highway 9 to McGuinn Road (McGuinn’s store/Exxon on the right corner). Turn right and go 1 mile to intersection with Big Level Road (dead end). Turn left. Go .3 miles to Aden Green Road on the right. Turn right and go .4 miles to Walnut Creek Preserve drive entrance on the left at Herbarium Lane. (There is a gate at the driveway\, which will be open for events). Turn left onto the drive\, through the black gate and then left onto Conservatory Lane. Come up the drive to the Nature Center parking lot on the right. \n

SUMMARY:A Nighttime Walk to Celebrate the Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2024 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area\, first/lower parking lot \nJoin us to celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – with a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nStarting from the lower/first parking lot\, participants will be asked to enjoy a silent walk in the darkness\, without the aid of flashlights. (Red flashlights are permitted\, but only if needed/when necessary.) The stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. Once arriving at the falls\, in the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining (white light) flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are asked to: \n\nbring (white light) flashlights to help illuminate the waterfall when we arrive\nonly us red flashlights along the trail and as needed – we’d like to invite you to use your senses and realize how well you can see and enjoy the wilderness in the dark!\nwalk in silence to the waterfall\nbring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the lower/first parking lot\n\nThe event will be cancelled in case of heavy rain\, snow\, or ice. Pre-registration is required\, please RSVP below.  There is no charge for this event. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the website event will be updated by 12 p.m. on the day of the walk if cancellation is necessary. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. Walkers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring water and a snack for themselves. SUMMARY:Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE) Invasive Plant Management
DESCRIPTION:FENCE needs your help clearing invasive plants on the FENCE property. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2026. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. DESCRIPTION:Date: January 18\, 2025 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Liz Hillard\, Wildlands Network’s senior wildlife biologist for the Appalachian region \nThis presentation will highlight the importance of habitat connectivity in Western North Carolina/the Southern Appalachians\, highlighting local efforts to provide wildlife safe passage across our roadways\, and discuss the challenges (and opportunities) in building back better\, with wildlife in mind\, after Hurricane Helene. \nLiz Hillard is Wildlands Network’s senior wildlife biologist for the Appalachian region and based in Asheville. Join us to learn how to see and identify many of the tracks and signs that animals leave behind when we’re not there to see them. \nTorlina\, a biologist\, has been with the Conservancy for 18 years. She has over 25 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator. She has worked with the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation-Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve\, in Haliburton\, Ontario\, Canada\, where she has performed annual migratory and breeding bird surveys\, surveys on nocturnal owls\, hawks and woodpeckers\, presented educational programs on birds for adults and children\, conducted nest searches and nest record data in the U.S. and Canada\, she has volunteered with a licensed bird bander\, and she has participated in data collection for the most recent Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas and is currently a co-coordinator for the North Carolina Bird Atlas\, region 9. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Etowah Library’s calendar of events at this link.  \n \nThe Etowah Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a litter cleanup on the beautiful Oklawaha Greenway!\nWhen: January 24th\, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. \nMeet: Oklawaha Greenway parking area across from Berkeley Mills Park. Look for a Conserving Carolina sign to guide you to the parking area. \n\nThe Oklawaha Greenway provides a green recreational space for the City of Hendersonville and we want to make sure it stays clear of litter! We will clean up litter along Conserving Carolina’s two-mile Adopt-a-Greenway section from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances (~3-miles) and may need to bend over to pick up trash. All tools and gloves will be provided. \nWhat to Wear:\nWork pants\, long sleeves; dress for the weather \nClose-toed shoes \nWhat to Bring:\nWater\, snacks. \nWork gloves (if you have a personal pair) \nPlease RSVP below.

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJoin the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda.
