SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series: Survival By Degrees - The Impact of Climate Change on Birds
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 21\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Tom Tribble\, Past President of the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter and current At-Large Director of Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter \nFor over 100 years\, Audubon had focused on making the world a better place for birds. In 2014\, National Audubon released a Birds and Climate Change Report. The report established that shrinking and shifting ranges due to the changing climate could imperil more than half of the 588 species of North America breeding birds involved in the study – within this century. This seven-year science investigation\, made possible by decades of community-science data\, sounded an alarm that made news around the world. In early October of 2019\, National Audubon released a follow-up report – Survival By Degrees – that paints an even more challenging situation for birds if the world does not take action to reduce global warming. This presentation will summarize the results of this study and discuss actions that individuals can take to help birds. \nTom Tribble served six years as President and is now an At-Large Director of Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter\, which covers Buncombe\, Henderson\, Madison and several adjacent counties in western North Carolina. Tom has been an Audubon member and avid birder for more than 45 years. Tom worked for 30 years at the NC Center for Geographic Information & Analysis\, the State’s Geographic Information System\, retiring in 2013. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and a Master’s degree from Duke University. \n \nThe Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Preserve. \n*Walnut Creek Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Writing in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. We will begin with mindfulness meditation and some “forest bathing” with “texture gathering.”- Mattie Decker \nJournals and supplies will be provided\, however you may wish to bring your own. \nRegistration is limited to 12 participants. \nLEARN MORE ABOUT FOREST BATHING \nTO REGISTER PLEASE CLICK HERE \nYou will be redirected from the Conserving Carolina site at this time.\n*Transfiguration Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).

SUMMARY:Speaker Series at Laughing Waters Retreat: Forest Lifeways: Food\, Medicine and More
DESCRIPTION:Date: October 5\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat – in the orchard \nSpeaker: Sara Jackson of Bat Cave Designs \nThis Forest Lifeways discussion explores the myriad lifeforms and lifeways of the forest from a naturalist’s perspective. From fungi to flora to fauna\, we will first take a bird’s eye view of the intricate web of forest life. In the second part\, we will delve into the ways that people have lived with\, stewarded and been part of these very special places from early on\, up to the present day. Shelter\, water\, food\, medicine\, materials\, and deep connection are all ways that humans always have and continue to benefit from one of the greatest strongholds of life on this earth: our incredible forests. \nSara lives among three creeks\, deep in the forest of Bat Cave\, NC. As a student of nature\, she is profoundly grateful to gain and offer her understanding as a naturalist\, educator and photographer. Along with family life in the forest and raising a future steward\, she is a conservationist\, advocate and resource creator who assists nonprofits\, groups and programs in the areas of conservation\, forest farming\, education and more. Her favorite topics are forest botanicals\, ecology\, foraging\, ethnobotany and traditional medicines. \nGuests will park in the orchard at Laughing Waters Retreat\, accessed from the address below\, and walk up a little hill and gravel driveway to the pavilion.  If anyone has mobility challenges\, there is the opportunity to be dropped off closer to the pavilion. \n \nPrograms at Laughing Waters Retreat Center are made possible thanks to our partnership with Laughing Waters Retreat Center. SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Moonshine Falls
DESCRIPTION:Where: Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC \nTime: 8:30 a.m. \nTrail info.: 5.5 miles\, moderate; trail type – out and back \nElevation gain: 823′ \nDrive time: approximately 35 minutes \nJoin us for an approximately 5.5-mile\, moderate\, out and back hike in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. Leaving from Asbury Hills Camp and Retreat Center in Cleveland\, South Carolina\, the trail winds through a maturing forest and offers great winter views of Table Rock.  At one point\, hikers will have to cross Matthews Creek using a cable crossing (one cable for your feet and one cable for your hands).  This is the easiest way to cross the creek\, though rock hopping and wadding may be possible.  The cable crossing may test your courage but it will offer a great sense of accomplishment! \nApproaching the waterfall\, hikers will arrive near the top of the falls and take a short\, fairly steep descent to a cave behind the falls.  This offers a unique view of the waterfall.  There will also be an opportunity to hike down to the base of the falls to take in the full splendor of this hidden gem. \nThe waterfall was named for the illegal moonshining activity that occurred in the ‘cave’ behind the falls\, and old moonshining barrels still remain behind the falls.  This waterfall plunges like a veil 40 feet over a dark granite cliff\, strikes a ledge\, turns 90 degrees and plunges into a pool. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, September 20\, 2024.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. SUMMARY:Brevard Speaker Series: Masters of the Night - Bats
DESCRIPTION:Date: October 28\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Transylvania County Public Library\, Rogow Room \nSpeaker: Sharon Mammoser\, naturalist\, photographer\, and writer \nBats are amazingly diverse\, and incredibly important to a healthy ecosystem. One average size bat can eat up to 1000 mosquito-sized insects in ONE HOUR and save farmers all over the world millions of dollars in pest control. Yet so many people have a negative opinion of this gentle animal. My friend\, and bat biologist and photographer\, Merlin Tuttle has dedicated his life to studying bats and educating people around the world about their value. With the help of some of his incredible photos\, this program will introduce you to the fascinating world of bats. How many bat species are there? How many live in NC? How do they find their prey in pitch darkness? Do they spread rabies and other diseases? Why would you want to welcome bats into your yards? These and many more questions will be answered as we discover the truth about these masters of the night. \nAfter a childhood full of time spent exploring the wild lands around her house in western New York state\, Sharon earned her Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY at New Paltz. For the next 12 years she shared nature with people of all ages in Minnesota\, Michigan\, Rhode Island\, Colorado and New York. After thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail\, she moved to western North Carolina. Through photography\, writing\, and educational programs\, she aims to educate people about their outdoor neighbors and encourage actions that will help the natural world thrive. Sharon states\, “Nature is my church. It is what nourishes my soul and makes my heart sing with joy.” \n \nThe Brevard Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the NC Cooperative Extension\, Transylvania County Center. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
