DESCRIPTION:Great-Horned-Owl-by-Jon-David-Nelson-is-licensed-under-CC-BY-NC-SA-2.0.jpg \nDate: October 25\, 2024 \nTime: 1:00 a.m. \nLocation: Etowah Library \nSpeaker: Pam Torlina\, Community Engagement Director for Conserving Carolina \nTorlina’s presentation will focus on the several species of owls found in the Carolinas and highlight the special characteristics that make them successful predators of the night. \nDuring the presentation\, participants will get an up-close look at feathers\, talons\, and owl specimens in order to gain a better understanding of their unique characteristics (it is illegal to possess any part of a migratory bird without the proper permitting\, and Conserving Carolina is permitted by the federal government to collect and possess bird specimens to be used for educational purposes). \nTorlina\, a biologist\, has been with the Conservancy for 18 years. She has over 25 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator. She has worked with the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation-Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve\, in Haliburton\, Ontario\, Canada\, where she has performed annual migratory and breeding bird surveys\, surveys on nocturnal owls\, hawks and woodpeckers\, presented educational programs on birds for adults and children\, conducted nest searches and nest record data in the U.S. and Canada\, she has volunteered with a licensed bird bander\, and she has participated in data collection for the most recent Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas and is currently a co-coordinator for the North Carolina Bird Atlas\, region 9. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Etowah Library’s calendar of events at this link. The Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy will present the results of a year-long engineering and economic impact study to the public in two meetings\, one in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. \nThese presentations will address: \n\nFindings from public input – community goals and concerns\nRail to trail development process\nExisting condition of the trail corridor and bridges\nTrail design and safety recommendations from the engineering team\nProjected regional economic impacts\n\n\n\nConserving Carolina is one of three nonprofit partners spearheading the Saluda Grade Trail\, along with Upstate Forever and PAL: Play\, Advocate\, Live Well. Together\, these three nonprofits partners formed the Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy to advance the trail project. \n\n\nThe first meeting will take place on Aug. 6 at 6:00 at Polk County High School. The second meeting will take place Aug. 13 at 6:00 at Gramling United Methodist Church.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Water Quality in Streams and Rivers of Upstate South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 6\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Dr. Greg Lewis\, professor of biology at Furman University \nThe Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces of South Carolina are experiencing some of the fastest urban growth in the country.  Therefore\, it’s important to understand how the transformation of rural lands to urban and suburban lands affects water quality and other conditions in streams and rivers\, which are often used as public water supplies\, receivers of treated wastewater\, and for recreational opportunities. This presentation will provide a summary of over 20 years of research by faculty and students at Furman University on how both natural variations in the landscape and human activity influence water quality in streams and rivers in this region. \nGreg is a Professor and the Chair of the Biology Department at Furman University.  He has been on the faculty at the University since 2000.  Since childhood\, he has been fascinated by freshwater ecosystems and has spent most of his professional career studying them.  As a PhD student at Cornell University\, he studied small streams in the Allegheny National Forest of northwestern Pennsylvania.  As a postdoctoral research fellow at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory near Aiken\, South Carolina\, he studied small artificial lakes. For the past 23 years at Furman\, he has collaborated with other Biology faculty and faculty in the Department of Earth\, Environmental\, and Sustainability Sciences on interdisciplinary studies of streams\, rivers\, ponds\, and wetlands across the South Carolina Piedmont and Blue Ridge Escarpment.  His research has focused on how a variety of human activities (including release of wastewater treatment effluent\, urbanization\, and agriculture) influence water quality in streams and rivers. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Restoration Projects Along the French Broad River
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an update on Conserving Carolina’s restoration projects along the French Broad River from Conserving Carolina’s Natural Resources Manager\, David Lee! \nConserving Carolina has completed several restoration projects along the French Broad River and it’s tributaries. To date restoring nearly 50 acres of wetlands\, 125 acres of floodplain\, nearly 23 acres of native pollinator habitat\, and nearly 5 miles of streams. These restoration sites have returned abandoned agricultural land and a failed golf course development back to more natural floodplains designed to handle periods of high water\, created wetlands\, and restored native vegetation and habitat that supports a variety of species\, both terrestrial and aquatic. \nIn addition\, Conserving Carolina has been directly collaborating with Cherokee artisans who have harvested rivercane from some of these sites for making traditional baskets and clay for making traditional pottery. Cherokee artisans are also helping to develop planting plans on upcoming restoration projects along the French Broad River. These plans will prioritize plants of cultural significance to the Cherokee\, such as white oak\, rivercane\, and yellowroot for their future harvest and sustainable use. \nCome learn about these exciting projects and what the Conservancy has planned for 2024 – 2026! \nDavid lived most of his life in Florida\, but he spent many vacations camping\, hiking\, and enjoying nature in the southern Appalachians. These experiences instilled in him a sense of appreciation for the environment that led to a strong commitment to conserve it. After earning a BS in Environmental Science from the University of West Florida\, David relocated to Asheville where he worked as a Bog Steward for The Nature Conservancy. He then served two consecutive terms with AmeriCorps Project Conserve with Conserving Carolina’s Weed Action Coalition of the Hickory Nut Gorge (WAC-HNG) where he preserved the natural habitats and scenic beauty of the Gorge through management of non-native invasive plants. He joined the staff in 2014 where he works to keep our protected lands healthy\, which means a good deal of non-native\, invasive species management. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Join us to help dig up these important pollinator plants and a larval host plant of the Monarch butterfly! \nParticipants are welcome to take rhizomes/plants home to plant or they can help pot them up to be used in native pollinator gardens and restoration sites in the region. \n  \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be digging and potting up Common Milkweed rhizomes. \nVolunteers must be able to walk a short distances over relatively level terrain. Please bring a digging tool (shovel preferred) and gloves. Pots will be provided but if you have some at home\, please bring them! However\, nearly half of southeastern bumble bee species are at risk of extinction. To protect our bees\, conservationists need more information about our rare bumble bees and their habitat requirements. The Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas is a community science project that aims to track and understand southeastern bumble bees. This presentation will cover the background of the Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas\, our findings so far\, and how you can get involved. The Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas is led by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation in collaboration with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Division\, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources\, and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. \nLaurie Hamon is an Endangered Species Conservation Biologist with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and the lead coordinator for the Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas. Laurie earned a PhD in Biology and Entomology from North Carolina State University with a thesis on the pollination biology of Venus flytraps. The Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy will present the results of a year-long engineering and economic impact study to the public in two meetings\, one in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. \nThese presentations will address: \n\nFindings from public input – community goals and concerns\nRail to trail development process\nExisting condition of the trail corridor and bridges\nTrail design and safety recommendations from the engineering team\nProjected regional economic impacts\n\n\n\nConserving Carolina is one of three nonprofit partners spearheading the Saluda Grade Trail\, along with Upstate Forever and PAL: Play\, Advocate\, Live Well. Together\, these three nonprofits partners formed the Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy to advance the trail project. \n\n\nThe first meeting will take place on Aug. 6 at 6:00 at Polk County High School. The second meeting will take place Aug. 13 at 6:00 at Gramling United Methodist Church.

DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. She was the Black Bear and Furbearer Biologist for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission from 2007 to 2024 and was responsible for managing and conserving black bears and 17 furbearer species. She is now the Game Mammals and Surveys Supervisor. Colleen is a past-president of the North Carolina Chapter of The Wildlife Society (TWS) and is chair of TWS Wildlife Damage Management Working Group. DESCRIPTION:When: August 18\, 2024\, 9 am – 11 am \nMeet at: Bearwallow Mountain Trailhead \nUnplug\, unwind\, and reconnect with nature during this unique hike and outdoor yoga series on Bearwallow Mountain\, in partnership with Journey of the Microcosm. \nMonthly\, on the second to last Sunday of each month\, enjoy a one-mile hike with gentle incline (easy/moderate\, ~500’ elevation change) through the forest to the top of Bearwallow Mountain for panoramic views and an hour of yoga for all levels with certified Yoga instructor\, Kiersten Angelos\, founder of Journey of the Microcosm. Her creative instructions will be a perfect match for Bearwallow Mountain. \nPre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 12 participants. To register\, please RSVP below. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike/activity beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Bring your yoga mat\, props\, water\, and a snack. There are no facilities on site\, if needed\, please use the “facilitrees” using Leave No Trace principles. Please be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require in case of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. SUMMARY:Guided Nature Walk – Looking for Mushrooms with Todd Elliott!
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Todd Elliott!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 24th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nTodd Elliott’s studies in biodiversity and interrelationships in nature have taken him to remote corners of the world to explore tropical rainforests\, deserts\, temperate forests\, beaches\, and high mountains on six continents. He is particularly interested in edible and medicinal mushrooms and plants and their importance to humans. Todd is an author of the Timber Press field guide Mushrooms of the Southeast and has published academic literature on various aspects of fungal ecology and taxonomy. Todd received his undergraduate degree in interpretive natural history from Warren Wilson College (USA) and his PhD in ecology from the University of New England (Australia). He enjoys sharing his research and knowledge of the natural world through presentations\, workshops\, and consultations for many different organizations in the US and abroad. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. SUMMARY:Edneyville Library Speaker Series: Southern Appalachians During the Ice Age
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 27\, 2024 \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nLocation: Edneyville Library \nSpeaker: naturalist and educator\, Dan Lazar \nDuring the presentation\, Dan Lazar will discuss the animals and plants that were found in this region twenty thousand years ago.  He will also present evidence suggesting the former occurrence of now-extinct species such as Jefferson’s Ground Sloth and the American Mastodon.  The presentation will show images depicting ice age species still surviving in our Southern Mountains. \nDan Lazar served for many years as Director of Education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as Executive Director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum.  Mr. Lazar has a degree in Forest Biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse.  He has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist Certificate Program at the North Carolina Arboretum since 2005\, teaching a variety of classes including Ecology of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Geology of the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Introduction to Insects\, Tree Identification\, and Meteorology.  Dan also has co-hosted “Nature News\,” a weekly radio program broadcast on WTZQ Hendersonville\, since 1993. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Edneyville Library’s calendar of events at this link. SUMMARY:Felburn Center Workday: Invasive Plant Management
DESCRIPTION:Workday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Kudzu\, Tree of Heaven\, Butterfly Bush\, and others from the grounds. Volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling methods to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk a short distance on level ground. Tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site.
