SUMMARY:French Broad River Series: LEARN! – Freshwater Mussels of the Western Carolinas
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 8\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Transylvania County Public Library \nSpeaker: Hans Lohmeyer\, freshwater ecologist and Conserving Carolina Stewardship Coordinator \nDive into the captivating world of freshwater mussels found in the mountain and foothill regions of the Carolinas\, as we unravel their biology\, ecology\, and pressing conservation concerns. This engaging talk offers a comprehensive overview of these remarkable creatures\, exploring their unique life cycle\, habitat preferences\, and the factors contributing to their alarming decline. \nJoin us on a journey through the rivers and streams that serve as the home for these hidden gems. Discover the intricate relationship between freshwater mussels and their environment\, as we explore their vital role in maintaining water quality and stream bed stability. Gain insight into the fascinating reproductive strategies and the complex interactions that shape their existence. \nHowever\, this talk also sheds light on the challenges faced by freshwater mussels. Learn about the various factors that have led to their decline\, including habitat degradation\, pollution\, and changes in river flow patterns. Explore the interconnectedness of these factors and their impact on the delicate balance of freshwater ecosystems. \nBy the end of this talk\, you will develop a deeper appreciation for the significance of freshwater mussels and the urgent need for their conservation. Discover how researchers and conservationists are coming together to protect these imperiled species\, implementing innovative strategies to restore their habitats and raise awareness about their importance. \n  \nHans\, a freshwater mussel enthusiast\, developed a passion for these aquatic creatures during his internship with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) while completing his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He gained invaluable expertise in captive propagation techniques and identifying diverse mussel species across the aquatic habitats of Western North Carolina. \nFurthering his education at Appalachian State University\, Hans earned his master’s degree and conducted his thesis research comparing freshwater mussel taxonomic relationships using a combination of DNA analysis\, geographic range data\, and shell morphology. This academic pursuit deepened his understanding of these fascinating organisms. \nFollowing his academic journey\, Hans dedicated three years to the NCWRC\, focusing on the conservation of freshwater mussels through the preservation of both wild and captive populations. Recently\, he has taken on the role of Stewardship Coordinator at Conserving Carolina\, collaborating with private landowners to promote conservation easements. \n    \nThe French Broad River Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the NC Cooperative Extension\, Transylvania County Center and the Transylvania County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: Top Ten Hummingbird Myths (Plus Two\, Maybe More!)
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 9\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Bill Hilton\, Jr.\, executive director of Hilton Pond North: Blue Ridge Birds & Nature\, Lansing\, NC \nRuby-throated Hummingbirds are likely the most common hummingbird species in the world\, but there is much to be learned about their life history. Alas\, many facts about hummers are clouded by misperceptions and untruths. During his presentation\, Dr. Bill Hilton Jr.\, principal investigator for “Operation RubyThroat: The Hummingbird Project\,” will “bust” some common myths about ruby-throats and share exciting results of his work—includingcitizen science hummingbird expeditions to the Neotropics. There will be plenty of time following for questions and answers about these amazing little birds that break all the rules. \nDr. Hilton was twice named South Carolina Science Teacher of the Year and was honored as the state’s Outstanding Biology Teacher. In December 2008 Discover magazine cited him as one of “50 Best Brains in Science” and one of ten top amateur scientists in America. His undergraduate major in philosophy from Newberry College was excellent preparation for his advanced science degrees from Winthrop University and University of Minnesota. \nFrom 1982 to early 2024 Dr. Hilton was based near York\, South Carolina\, at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History (www.hiltonpond.org)\, a non-profit organization he founded on family property. An active field researcher\, Hilton banded more than 79\,000 birds of 127 species during 43 years just at York. In February 2024 he moved operations to a new site in upper Ashe County\, North Carolina\, calling it “Hilton Pond North: Blue Ridge Birds & Nature\,” where he continues his innovative environmental education\, natural history research\, and conservation activities. \nDr. Hilton is one of only about 150 people authorized to capture wild hummingbirds and has banded 10\,000-plus Ruby-throated Hummingbirds since 1984. He also investigates other aspects of natural history\, from pollination to predation and ecological succession to environmental change. \nDr. Hilton led more than 260 U.S.\, Canadian\, Swiss\, and Costa Rican citizen scientists on 30 Neotropical hummingbird field expeditions to Central America–all as part of his Operation RubyThroat (www.rubythroat.org). “This Week at Hilton Pond\,” Dr. Hilton’s on-going series of information-rich photo essays about nature phenomena in the Carolinas and elsewhere\, has a large international following; nearly 800 installments are permanently archived on-line at www.hiltonpond.org. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems and a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Writing in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. We will begin with mindfulness meditation and some “forest bathing” with “texture gathering.”- Mattie Decker \nJournals and supplies will be provided\, however you may wish to bring your own. \nRegistration is limited to 12 participants. \nLEARN MORE ABOUT FOREST BATHING \nTO REGISTER PLEASE CLICK HERE \nYou will be redirected from the Conserving Carolina site at this time. \n*Transfiguration Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Water Quality in Streams and Rivers of Upstate South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 6\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Dr. Greg Lewis\, professor of biology at Furman University \nThe Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces of South Carolina are experiencing some of the fastest urban growth in the country.  Therefore\, it’s important to understand how the transformation of rural lands to urban and suburban lands affects water quality and other conditions in streams and rivers\, which are often used as public water supplies\, receivers of treated wastewater\, and for recreational opportunities. This presentation will provide a summary of over 20 years of research by faculty and students at Furman University on how both natural variations in the landscape and human activity influence water quality in streams and rivers in this region. \nGreg is a Professor and the Chair of the Biology Department at Furman University.  He has been on the faculty at the University since 2000.  Since childhood\, he has been fascinated by freshwater ecosystems and has spent most of his professional career studying them.  As a PhD student at Cornell University\, he studied small streams in the Allegheny National Forest of northwestern Pennsylvania.  As a postdoctoral research fellow at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory near Aiken\, South Carolina\, he studied small artificial lakes. For the past 23 years at Furman\, he has collaborated with other Biology faculty and faculty in the Department of Earth\, Environmental\, and Sustainability Sciences on interdisciplinary studies of streams\, rivers\, ponds\, and wetlands across the South Carolina Piedmont and Blue Ridge Escarpment.  His research has focused on how a variety of human activities (including release of wastewater treatment effluent\, urbanization\, and agriculture) influence water quality in streams and rivers. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Restoration Projects Along the French Broad River
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an update on Conserving Carolina’s restoration projects along the French Broad River from Conserving Carolina’s Natural Resources Manager\, David Lee! \nConserving Carolina has completed several restoration projects along the French Broad River and it’s tributaries. To date restoring nearly 50 acres of wetlands\, 125 acres of floodplain\, nearly 23 acres of native pollinator habitat\, and nearly 5 miles of streams. These restoration sites have returned abandoned agricultural land and a failed golf course development back to more natural floodplains designed to handle periods of high water\, created wetlands\, and restored native vegetation and habitat that supports a variety of species\, both terrestrial and aquatic. \nIn addition\, Conserving Carolina has been directly collaborating with Cherokee artisans who have harvested rivercane from some of these sites for making traditional baskets and clay for making traditional pottery. Cherokee artisans are also helping to develop planting plans on upcoming restoration projects along the French Broad River. These plans will prioritize plants of cultural significance to the Cherokee\, such as white oak\, rivercane\, and yellowroot for their future harvest and sustainable use. \nCome learn about these exciting projects and what the Conservancy has planned for 2024 – 2026! \nDavid lived most of his life in Florida\, but he spent many vacations camping\, hiking\, and enjoying nature in the southern Appalachians. These experiences instilled in him a sense of appreciation for the environment that led to a strong commitment to conserve it. After earning a BS in Environmental Science from the University of West Florida\, David relocated to Asheville where he worked as a Bog Steward for The Nature Conservancy. He then served two consecutive terms with AmeriCorps Project Conserve with Conserving Carolina’s Weed Action Coalition of the Hickory Nut Gorge (WAC-HNG) where he preserved the natural habitats and scenic beauty of the Gorge through management of non-native invasive plants. He joined the staff in 2014 where he works to keep our protected lands healthy\, which means a good deal of non-native\, invasive species management. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. You don’t have to drink at Green Drinks\, just come and listen. Trailside Brewing Co. offers beer\, wine\, cider\, prosecco and non-alcoholic beverages. A limited food menu will be available. \n       \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
