SUMMARY:Edneyville Library Speaker Series: Beneficial Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 4\, 2024 \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nLocation: Edneyville Library \nSpeaker: Steve Pettis\, Henderson County Horticulture Agent \nJune is ‘Pollinator Month’. Join Steve Pettis\, Henderson County Extension Agent for NC State University\, to learn about pollinating insects and how to attract them to your yard! Pollinating insects such as native bees\, wasps\, beetles and flies are critical to native plant reproduction and to our food supply but these workhorses of the insect world are under threat from land use changes\, pesticides and habitat loss. The great news is that you can make a difference by dedicating a part of your landscape to the plants that feed and shelter pollinators. Steve will teach you how to make your yard and garden a pollinator paradise! \nSteve Pettis has spent his life studying plants and gardening.  As a child\, he gardened with his grandmother dividing daylilies\, irises and daffodils and collecting native plants in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia.  Steve has been a tree farm and nursery manager\, a research greenhouse manager\, a consulting arborist\, UGA Extension Agent in Rockdale and Gwinnett Counties\, and is now a North Carolina Horticulture Agent in Henderson County. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Edneyville Library’s calendar of events at this link. Registrations open at 10:00am Tuesday\, May 7\, 2024. \n \nThe Edneyville Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: André Michaux and his contribution to botany in the southeast
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 6\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: author\, Charles Williams \nKnown to today’s biologists primarily as the “Michx.” at the end of more than 700 plant names and to historians for his part in the Genet Affair\, André Michaux was an intrepid French naturalist. Under the directive of King Louis XVI\, he was commissioned to gather and grow American plants and ship them back to his homeland in order to improve French forestry\, agriculture\, and horticulture. He made major botanical discoveries that he published in his two landmark books\, Histoire des Chênes de l’Amérique (1801)\, a compendium of all oak species recognized from eastern North America\, and Flora Boreali-Americana (1803)\, the first account of all plants known in eastern North America. \nTo carry out his mission for the French government\, Michaux traveled from the Bahamas to Hudson’s Bay and west to the Mississippi River on a series of journeys that are indicated on a finely rendered\, color-coded map in this volume. His writings detail the many hardships and dangers that Michaux endured on the North American frontier and on his return home. But it also conveys the soaring joys of exploration in a new world where Nature still reigned supreme\, a paradise of plants mostly unknown to science. \n  \nCharlie Williams is retired librarian from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library in North Carolina. He recently authored André Michaux in North America; Journals and Letters\, 1785–1797 and he edited The Annotated Memoirs of the Life and Botanical Travels of André Michaux by J.P.F. Deleuze and chairs the André Michaux International Society (AMIS). \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: An Introduction to Western Carolina Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 11\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: David Ahrenholz \n  \nDuring this presentation\, participants will learn how to identify the butterflies of the western Carolinas through photographs taken by the presenter\, as well as the foodplants needed to attract both the caterpillar and adult stages to your home butterfly garden. \nDr. Ahrenholz began his interest in butterflies as a child in Iowa. He taught himself photography because family and friends were not interested in dead insect specimens. After medical school he continued his passion for nature photography\, photographing butterflies across the US and tropical South America. His photographs captured new species and led to an appointment as a Research Associate in the Entomology Department at the Smithsonian. He has pursued a 25 year project with the museum to document the butterflies of Ecuador in photographs and by collecting specimens. Now retired from his surgical career at the University of Minnesota\, he has moved with his wife to their horse farm in the Landrum area where he enjoys equestrian foxhunting and sharing images from his butterfly garden. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems and a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Why should environmentalists support building more housing?
DESCRIPTION:We know that healthy communities exist within the context of a healthy environment — and right now\, both are threatened. There is a housing shortage across the country\, with many hard-working families unable to find a place to live. There is also a climate crisis\, with greenhouse gas emissions threatening the stability of all our planet’s ecosystems and biodiversity. \nJoin us to learn more about MountainTrue’s newest program\, Neighbors for More Neighbors WNC\, and about part of the solution to both these crises. \nAs the Housing & Transportation Director for MountainTrue and the program director for Neighbors for More Neighbors WNC\, Susan Bean informs organizational policy priorities for housing and transportation projects across Western North Carolina. Susan earned her Masters in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville\, where she led wilderness expeditions as a graduate assistant for the university’s outdoor program. She is actively involved in the community serving as a member of the Planning & Zoning Commission for the City of Asheville and a facilitator for Building Bridges. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. You don’t have to drink at Green Drinks\, just come and listen. Trailside Brewing Co. offers beer\, wine\, cider\, prosecco and non-alcoholic beverages. A limited food menu will be available. \n       \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series: The Backyard Chorus - Insect Songs Through the Seasons
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 15\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Timothy G. Forrest\, Professor Emeritus\, Department of Biology\, UNC-Asheville \nWhy do insects make sounds?  How do they make sounds?  What are the common sound-producing species in North Carolina and when are they most active?  If you are curious about these questions\, this is a presentation for you!  This presentation is a brief introduction to the most common singing insects with special reference to those in North Carolina.  The talk discusses the function and mechanisms of sound production for crickets\, katydids\, and cicadas.  Along with learning tidbits of natural history and the behavior of singing insects\, you hear the species-specific songs that help you identify them and you learn how the chorus in your backyard changes during the year. \nTim Forrest is an Emeritus Professor of Biology at UNC-Asheville and has been studying and teaching about insect biology and behavior for over 40 years.   He received Masters and Doctoral degrees in Entomology from the University of Florida. After postdoctoral research in Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell University\, he took a position in the Biology Department at UNCA.  There\, Tim taught courses in Ecology\, Evolution\, Animal Behavior\, Invertebrate Zoology\, and Entomology.  For 9 years during his tenure at UNCA\, Tim organized and ran Bug Camp\, a week-long summer camp for middle school students. \n \nThe Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Preserve. \n*Walnut Creek Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series at Laughing Waters Retreat: Cross Cultural Understanding and the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 22\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat – in the orchard \nSpeaker: Elaine Eisenbraun\, Executive Director of the Nikwasi Initiative\, and Kirstie Frady\, Enrolled Member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) \nPeople have lived on\, learned from\, and altered this extraordinary landscape for millennia. Noquisi Initiative invites people to cross the bridge between Cherokee heritage and today’s society.  How does the scenery out our window\, the stories we tell\, even the language we speak bring us together as people and with our homeland. How can we incorporate Cherokee wisdom into our approach to the land and each other? What can we offer in return? This presentation will share the interplay between people and place and how it is influenced by our own experience. \nElaine Eisenbraun guides Noquisi Initiative in its mission to ‘preserve\, protect\, and promote culture and history in the original homelands of the Cherokee. This is Elaine’s fourth executive directorship and she sees this organization as the one that can have the greatest impact on place-based understanding of diverse cultures. Elaine’s undergraduate work was in forest management\, which led to several years of working in the woods for industry\, government and consulting. She believes that her years working in the woods was where she learned to see relationships that tend to elude the eye. After drifting toward environmental education\, Elaine directed organizations in Vermont and Oregon. She taught communities to be “community focused and landscape reflected.” In a short detour\, Elaine founded and led an organization that brought fine art to critically ill children. Then she came to western North Carolina to combine her skills in landscape awareness\, community development\, art\, and outreach. Together\, her experience and Master of Science degree in Leadership and Management helps her embrace the tasks that unfold every day within Noquisi Initiative. Sometime\, ask her about her fun work in such diverse fields as: avalanche study\, equipment operation\, textiles\, fire fighting\, wildlife management and more. \nKirstie is a recent graduate of the Dadiwonisi Cherokee Language and Heritage program for enrolled Tribal members.  She has worked as a Cherokee language transcriber.  Kirstie now works for Noquisi Initiative and attends college seeking a degree in Human Services. She is a traditional basket weaver and lives in Robbinsville (Snowbird) with her husband and 6 children. \nThe Nikwasi Initiative was founded to promote\, interpret and link cultural and historic sites (such as the Noquisiyi and Cowee mounds) along a Cherokee Cultural Corridor\, along with raising awareness and funds to pursue those efforts and exploring more opportunities for collaboration between the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and local communities.  \nGuests will park in the orchard at Laughing Waters Retreat\, accessed from the address below\, and walk up a little hill and gravel driveway to the pavilion.  If anyone has mobility challenges\, there is the opportunity to be dropped off closer to the pavilion. \n \nPrograms at Laughing Waters Retreat Center are made possible thanks to our partnership with Laughing Waters Retreat Center. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Writing in Nature
DESCRIPTION:“Writing in Nature”  RETREAT at Transfiguration Preserve. This month we will write\, and spend more time in the wild. Pack your lunch and bring a mat or blanket/towel for our mid-day break. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. We will begin with mindfulness meditation and some “forest bathing” with “texture gathering.”- Mattie Decker \nPlease contact Mattie Decker drmattie.decker@gmail.com with questions and more details. A welcome letter will come to you after you register. \nLEARN MORE ABOUT FOREST BATHING \nTO REGISTER PLEASE CLICK HERE \nYou will be redirected from the Conserving Carolina site at this time.

SUMMARY:French Broad River Series: LEARN! – Freshwater Mussels of the Western Carolinas
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 8\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Transylvania County Public Library \nSpeaker: Hans Lohmeyer\, freshwater ecologist and Conserving Carolina Stewardship Coordinator \nDive into the captivating world of freshwater mussels found in the mountain and foothill regions of the Carolinas\, as we unravel their biology\, ecology\, and pressing conservation concerns. This engaging talk offers a comprehensive overview of these remarkable creatures\, exploring their unique life cycle\, habitat preferences\, and the factors contributing to their alarming decline. \nJoin us on a journey through the rivers and streams that serve as the home for these hidden gems. Discover the intricate relationship between freshwater mussels and their environment\, as we explore their vital role in maintaining water quality and stream bed stability. Gain insight into the fascinating reproductive strategies and the complex interactions that shape their existence. \nHowever\, this talk also sheds light on the challenges faced by freshwater mussels. Learn about the various factors that have led to their decline\, including habitat degradation\, pollution\, and changes in river flow patterns. Explore the interconnectedness of these factors and their impact on the delicate balance of freshwater ecosystems. \nBy the end of this talk\, you will develop a deeper appreciation for the significance of freshwater mussels and the urgent need for their conservation. Discover how researchers and conservationists are coming together to protect these imperiled species\, implementing innovative strategies to restore their habitats and raise awareness about their importance. \n  \nHans\, a freshwater mussel enthusiast\, developed a passion for these aquatic creatures during his internship with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) while completing his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He gained invaluable expertise in captive propagation techniques and identifying diverse mussel species across the aquatic habitats of Western North Carolina. \nFurthering his education at Appalachian State University\, Hans earned his master’s degree and conducted his thesis research comparing freshwater mussel taxonomic relationships using a combination of DNA analysis\, geographic range data\, and shell morphology. This academic pursuit deepened his understanding of these fascinating organisms. \nFollowing his academic journey\, Hans dedicated three years to the NCWRC\, focusing on the conservation of freshwater mussels through the preservation of both wild and captive populations. Recently\, he has taken on the role of Stewardship Coordinator at Conserving Carolina\, collaborating with private landowners to promote conservation easements. \n    \nThe French Broad River Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the NC Cooperative Extension\, Transylvania County Center and the Transylvania County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: Top Ten Hummingbird Myths (Plus Two\, Maybe More!)
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 9\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Bill Hilton\, Jr.\, executive director of Hilton Pond North: Blue Ridge Birds & Nature\, Lansing\, NC \nRuby-throated Hummingbirds are likely the most common hummingbird species in the world\, but there is much to be learned about their life history. Alas\, many facts about hummers are clouded by misperceptions and untruths. During his presentation\, Dr. Bill Hilton Jr.\, principal investigator for “Operation RubyThroat: The Hummingbird Project\,” will “bust” some common myths about ruby-throats and share exciting results of his work—includingcitizen science hummingbird expeditions to the Neotropics. There will be plenty of time following for questions and answers about these amazing little birds that break all the rules. \nDr. Hilton was twice named South Carolina Science Teacher of the Year and was honored as the state’s Outstanding Biology Teacher. In December 2008 Discover magazine cited him as one of “50 Best Brains in Science” and one of ten top amateur scientists in America. His undergraduate major in philosophy from Newberry College was excellent preparation for his advanced science degrees from Winthrop University and University of Minnesota. \nFrom 1982 to early 2024 Dr. Hilton was based near York\, South Carolina\, at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History (www.hiltonpond.org)\, a non-profit organization he founded on family property. An active field researcher\, Hilton banded more than 79\,000 birds of 127 species during 43 years just at York. In February 2024 he moved operations to a new site in upper Ashe County\, North Carolina\, calling it “Hilton Pond North: Blue Ridge Birds & Nature\,” where he continues his innovative environmental education\, natural history research\, and conservation activities. \nDr. Hilton is one of only about 150 people authorized to capture wild hummingbirds and has banded 10\,000-plus Ruby-throated Hummingbirds since 1984. He also investigates other aspects of natural history\, from pollination to predation and ecological succession to environmental change. \nDr. Hilton led more than 260 U.S.\, Canadian\, Swiss\, and Costa Rican citizen scientists on 30 Neotropical hummingbird field expeditions to Central America–all as part of his Operation RubyThroat (www.rubythroat.org). “This Week at Hilton Pond\,” Dr. Hilton’s on-going series of information-rich photo essays about nature phenomena in the Carolinas and elsewhere\, has a large international following; nearly 800 installments are permanently archived on-line at www.hiltonpond.org. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems and a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
