SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Writing in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. We will begin with mindfulness meditation and some “forest bathing” with “texture gathering.”- Mattie Decker \nJournals and supplies will be provided\, however you may wish to bring your own. \nRegistration is limited to 12 participants. \nDonations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. A donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. DESCRIPTION:Date: February 3\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat Center \nPresenter: Doug Elliott\, naturalist and storyteller \nIt all starts in Elliott’s mountain-side cabin with a gift from an old groundhog hunter. From there we go on a rollicking and revealing journey\, not only through the natural world\, but also into folklore\, history\, mythology\, philosophy and into the lives of people of different cultures\, past and present. You’ll hear how groundhogs have been a source of food\, clothing\, medicine and music for generations of Appalachian folks. You’ll learn the mystical aspects of groundhogs — how they are woven into Native American and European mythology. You will find out the real story of Groundhog Day\, you’ll get clues to the great riddle: How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? You will learn how groundhogs can teach us about ourselves and even give us perspectives on society\, and world politics\, today! \nDoug Elliott is a naturalist\, herbalist\, storyteller\, basket maker\, philosopher\, and harmonica wizard who lives in Rutherford County\, NC. He has performed at festivals\, museums and schools from Canada to the Caribbean.  He has been a featured storyteller at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough\, TN and has conducted workshops and programs at the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and the Smithsonian Institution. He has trained rangers for the National Park Service and guided people on wilderness experiences from Down-east Maine to the Florida Everglades.  He was named harmonica champion at Fiddler’s Grove Festival in Union Grove\, N.C.  He regularly writes articles for regional and national magazines.  He has authored five books and produced a number of award winning recordings of stories and songs. \nThe event will take place in the indoor retreat center on the property. SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series – Hope for the Hemlocks
DESCRIPTION:Date: February 3rd\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Thom Green and Olivia Hall from Hemlock Restoration Initiative \nNorth Carolina’s hemlock trees need your help. We have two species of hemlock in North Carolina\, the eastern and the Carolina\, and the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid threatens both. Though hemlocks are declining\, there is hope to bring them back to their previous glory. The mission of Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is to work with a variety of partners and existing programs to restore hemlocks to long-term health throughout North Carolina and ensure that eastern and Carolina hemlocks can resist hemlock woolly adelgid and survive to maturity on North Carolina’s public and private lands. Join Olivia and Thom from the Hemlock Restoration Initiative to learn about hemlock ecology\, woolly adelgid biology\, what is being done to help\, and management strategies to take care of hemlocks on your own land. \nOlivia Hall is serving an AmeriCorps term with HRI as the Stewardship and Conservation Education Associate. She graduated with her Masters in Biology in May of 2023 from Northern Michigan University\, and moved to the Asheville area in July. Being from the north country\, she holds a particular affinity for conifers\, and she loves the ecological value and beauty they hold. She is thrilled to be a part of HRI for the year. \nThom Green is the national forests treatment coordinator for the Hemlock Restoration Initiative. He holds an MS in Biology from Western Carolina University where his studies focused on forest ecology of the Southern Appalachians. He has worked for HRI since 2017 carrying out hemlock conservation on public lands and educating landowners about protecting their own hemlocks. Tools\, safety vests\, and gloves will be provided. We will meet at the Fruitland Baptist Bible College.\n\nAfterwards\, please join us for a hike up Bearwallow Mountain (optional; 3 PM – 4:30 PM). SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Ecusta Trail Update and Plans for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Date: February 8\, 2024 \nTime: 5:30 p.m. \nLocation: Trailside Brewing Co. \nSpeakers: Mark Tooley\, president of Friends of Ecusta Trail (FOET) \nJoin us to learn about the latest developments on planning and construction of the Ecusta Trail\, as well as potential trail enhancements and connections that could occur in the future. Initial construction of the Ecusta Trail will be bare bones\, but there is the potential for many types of amenities that will vastly improve the user experience and involve community collaboration. During this presentation\, Mark will discuss some of the ideas that are being discussed for future development of the trail. Studies have found that the more connectivity a trail has to other trails and popular destinations\, the more useful and desirable it becomes. Mark will share information about how the Ecusta Trail connects with existing trails or those being planned in the region which will help provide connectivity for an enhanced user experience. \nThe Friends of Ecusta Trail (FOET) has been in existence for nearly 15 years as an advocacy organization to create a rail trail on the unused rail line between Hendersonville and Brevard.  FOET has worked with local governments\, private businesses\, non-governmental organizations\, and non-profits to gain community support for the trail during that time.  After Ecusta Rails2Trail LLC. (a subsidiary of Conserving Carolina) purchased the rail line in 2021\, FOET has worked with Conserving Carolina to raise private funds to provide required local matching funds for the federal grants that have been received.  Those grants that have been awarded\, totaling nearly $46 million\, will be used to build the entirety of the Ecusta Trail in the next several years.  Mark is a past board member of Conserving Carolina has been a board member of FOET for nearly 10 years.  He has been FOET’s president for the past two years and resides in Transylvania County. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. Learn how to care for your space throughout the year to support the widest diversity of creatures. \nBrannen Basham and Jill Jacobs are owners of Spriggly’s Beescaping\, a nature education and habitat restoration business with a special focus on native plants and native pollinators. On the habitat restoration side of their business\, they offer in-person and online consultations for wildlife-focused sustainable landscaping\, along with full-scale 2D and 3D design services. \nOn the nature education side\, they offer a variety of educational courses\, both in-person and online\, including a 16+ hour on-demand video series called Gardening for the Planet. This series covers everything from attracting pollinators\, to integrative pest management\, to tackling drainage issues. In addition\, they create nature-based interpretive exhibits and informational signage for museums\, zoos\, nature centers\, and more. They have published two books\, A Guide to the Wonderful World Around Us: Notes on Nature\, and Finding Home: A Story of a Mason Bee\, with more on the way. DESCRIPTION:Date: February 17\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Winslow Umberger of Appalachian Wildlife Refuge \nAppalachian Wild provides injured and orphaned wild animals a place to go for care and treatment to give them a second chance at life in the wild. Join us to learn about Appalachian Wildlife Refuge‘s mission\, its origin story\, and the broad range of animals species it serves in our region.  This presentation is filled with images and videos of animals that are rescued\, rehabilitated\, and released each year. The presentation will conclude with information about how the hotline works and suggestions about what you can do in your own backyard to help wildlife. \nWinslow Umberger\, like the nonprofit she represents\, shares the values of Appalachian Wildlife Refuge. Her move from her native home of Coral Gables\, Florida to Biltmore Lake in 2008 found her surrounded by forests filled with wildlife — wildlife that was becoming increasingly threatened as development increased.  Learning of Appalachian Wild’s work to provide a wildlife emergency facility for the community\, Winslow felt her skillset as a public relations and marketing professional could be of use.  She soon found herself writing a monthly “Wild Truth” column for The Laurel of Asheville as well as making presentations and hosting tabling events in the community.  A six-year Board member\, Winslow takes her role as an ambassador for Appalachian Wildlife Refuge seriously\, acting as a voice not only for the organization but for the wildlife it serves. \n \nThe Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Preserve. \n*Walnut Creek Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:The Way of Water: Fly Fishing as Contemplative Practice
DESCRIPTION:“People fish because they are searching for something. Often it is not for a fish.” Fennel Hudson\, Fly Fishing – Fennel’s Journal – No. 5 \nJoin us as we approach fly fishing as a contemplative practice and a way to experience renewal beyond just “getting on the water.” Western North Carolina has some of the best fly fishing on the east coast. Participants will have opportunities to fish on a private section of the Broad River. All levels of skill are welcome\, but gear\, and instruction is not provided. You must bring your own gear (rod\, reel\, North Carolina fishing license\, flies\, etc.). Participants must know how to fly fish. SUMMARY:Special Edition Green Drinks: “Drought\, Climate Change\, and The Mystery of the Missing Western Water”
DESCRIPTION:Hear WNC Native and Rocky Mountain Biological Lab Research Scientist Ian Breckheimer discuss how a team of environmental scientists are revolutionizing our understanding of water in the West and helping us adapt to climate change. \nThe Colorado River is the lifeblood of the American Southwest\, and the river’s 40 million human users are struggling to adapt to a severe drought made worse by climate change. The vast majority of the river’s flow comes from winter snowpack in the Rocky Mountains\, and in recent years scientists and water managers have become extremely good at measuring how much water is in the snowpack in early spring. Ideally\, we could use this information to forecast how much water will be available for human use in the river the following summer\, helping us better conserve this scarce resource. Unfortunately\, water forecasting on the Colorado is has been held back by a large and unpredictable amount of snow water (up to 25% of the river’s annual flow) that seems to disappear between the snowpack and the river. Solving the mystery of this “missing” water has brought together a diverse group of hydrologists\, ecologists\, and atmospheric scientists at a remote field station in Colorado. This talk will gather and synthesize exciting new results from their pioneering work\, showing how environmental researchers can play a critical role in helping us adapt to accelerating climate change. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: The effects of land use on streams and fish populations in the Piedmont of SC
DESCRIPTION:Photo licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 \n  \nDate: February 22\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Dennis Haney\, Ph.D. and Professor of Biology at Furman University \nJoin us to learn about the effects of present-day and historical land use on stream structure and fish populations in the Piedmont of South Carolina. For a number of years Dennis’s research has focused on human effects on rural streams and the organisms living within those streams. Observations showed that fish populations in rural piedmont streams are lacking in numbers and variety of species when compared to similar areas in the southeastern USA\, even in rural\, forested locations where we would expect fish diversity to be high. Over the past 10 years Dennis has looked at various aspects that might contribute to this\, conducting research on the effects of present-day land covers\, historical land covers\, and most recently focusing on microhabitat-level land covers (e.g.\, land cover adjacent to the stream channels) as possible explanations for present-day fish diversity and abundance. This presentation will summarize some of his findings over the past decade of work. \nDr. Dennis Haney is a Professor in the Biology Department at Furman University in Greenville\, South Carolina\, having been at Furman University since 1997. He received a B.A. in Biology at the University of California\, San Diego\, a M.S. in Zoology from Oregon State University\, and a Ph.D. in Zoology at the University of Florida (1996). Dr. Haney’s research is in the area of environmental and comparative physiology. More specifically he is interested in the physiological responses of animals\, especially fish\, to environmental stressors. Since 1999 Dr. Haney has been involved in an interdisciplinary watershed research program at Furman University\, the River Basins Research Initiative (RBRI)\, collaborating with colleagues in the Biology and Earth\, Environmental\, and Sustainability Sciences departments. His research has focused on studying the interactions between historic and present-day land use with water chemistry and geomorphology and how these factors affect the distribution and physiology of local stream fish. He is a strong advocate of undergraduate research\, helping to mentor well over 150 undergraduate students since 1997. Dr. Haney’s students have given numerous presentations at national and regional scientific conferences and have been co-authors on a number of publications. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing with opportunities for reflections and expressions in art. This event will offer avenues for creative expression which participants in past Forest Bathing walks have requested. We will close with the traditional tea ceremony and\, depending on weather\, may return to the house or porch for closing sharing together. \nWe will open all of our senses as we take in the fall forest.  This event includes creative activities led by artist Jim Stilwell and forest bathing guided by Dr. Mattie Decker. \nArtist\, Jim Stilwell\nJim is a well-known artist in Asheville\, NC and has worked over many years guiding individuals to come to know their own inner artist. He recently taught a large class outdoors at Flying Cloud Farm and many were beginners who delighted in his intuitive ease of instruction (with gentle modeling and suggestions). \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. SUMMARY:Volunteer Workday at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a volunteer workday removing non-native invasive species at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary\n\nBackground Info:\nPut under a conservation easement with Conserving Carolina in 2018\, Carolina Memorial Sanctuary is an 11-acre conservation & green cemetery passionate about protecting the land and conserving the environment. In addition to eco-burials\, CMS is a public park that strives to improve the land. The neighboring property\, under a conservation easement and owned by the Barkwells\, is partnering with Conserving Carolina and CMS to work on various conservation projects\, including: stream restoration\, storm water retention\, a pollinator meadow\, bluebird boxes\, invasive species removal\, native plantings\, and stream restoration \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Kudzu\, bamboo\, Chinese Privet\, Japanese Honeysuckle\, and Multiflora Rose from the sanctuary. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. DESCRIPTION:Where: Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC \nTime: 8:30 a.m. \nTrail info.: 5.5 miles\, moderate; trail type – out and back \nElevation gain: 823′ \nDrive time: approximately 35 minutes \nJoin us for an approximately 5.5-mile\, moderate\, out and back hike in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. Leaving from Asbury Hills Camp and Retreat Center in Cleveland\, South Carolina\, the trail winds through a maturing forest and offers great winter views of Table Rock.  At one point\, hikers will have to cross Matthews Creek using a cable crossing (one cable for your feet and one cable for your hands).  This is the easiest way to cross the creek\, though rock hopping and wadding may be possible.  The cable crossing may test your courage but it will offer a great sense of accomplishment! \nApproaching the waterfall\, hikers will arrive near the top of the falls and take a short\, fairly steep descent to a cave behind the falls.  This offers a unique view of the waterfall.  There will also be an opportunity to hike down to the base of the falls to take in the full splendor of this hidden gem. \nThe waterfall was named for the illegal moonshining activity that occurred in the ‘cave’ behind the falls\, and old moonshining barrels still remain behind the falls.  This waterfall plunges like a veil 40 feet over a dark granite cliff\, strikes a ledge\, turns 90 degrees and plunges into a pool. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. DESCRIPTION:Invasive Species Awareness Week is the last week in February (February 26 – March 1). We are supporting the NC Forest Service’s statewide Weed Out Day by removing invasive plants from the Florence Nature Preserve\, and we need your help! \nWe will work on removing Multiflora Rose\, Bittersweet\, and Privet\, trying to hand pull as much as we can as that is the most effective treatment this time of year. We will take a snack/lunch break mid-way through\, so bring your favorite packable foods. \nWear long sleeves and pants and sturdy work shoes. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring plenty of water. \nWe will meet at the Strawberry Gap trailhead and from there we will carpool/caravan up Little Pisgah Rd and work on one of the northern parts of the preserve that is away from the main trailhead. \n

DESCRIPTION:“People fish because they are searching for something. Often it is not for a fish.” Fennel Hudson\, Fly Fishing – Fennel’s Journal – No. 5 \nJoin us as we approach fly fishing as a contemplative practice and a way to experience renewal beyond just “getting on the water.” Western North Carolina has some of the best fly fishing on the east coast. Participants will have opportunities to fish on a private section of the Broad River. All levels of skill are welcome\, but gear\, and instruction is not provided. You must bring your own gear (rod\, reel\, North Carolina fishing license\, flies\, etc.). Participants must know how to fly fish. SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series – Historical Findings of Cherokee Living in the Carolinas
DESCRIPTION:Date: March 12\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Dennis Chastain\, naturalist\, historian and outdoor writer \n  \nBased on thirty years of research\, naturalist\, outdoor writer\, and historian\, Dennis Chastain will present his findings of the history and culture of the Cherokee people. The Cherokee people have lived in this area for thousands of years and are the aboriginal inhabitants and keepers of a vast geographic landscape covering parts of eight southeastern states. \nChastain says the slideshow will describe what he has discovered about the culture: the construction of houses and ceremonial buildings; foods and agricultural practices\, including the story of corn and how it changed the lifestyles of all southeastern Native Americans. \nAlso included is a description of some of the games played and how “ball play” was essential to everyday life. Chastain will also talk about hunting practices and the importance of the deer skin trade; why annual trips were made to the coast of South Carolina and what goods were brought back to the mountains and foothills from the coast. \nAnd finally\, Chastain will tell the story of how the arrival of Europeans at Charles Town in 1670\, and the interactions between early colonists and the Cherokee altered the culture of the Cherokee forever. \nDennis is an award-winning outdoor writer\, interpretive naturalist\, and modern-day explorer.  He has been writing feature articles for South Carolina Wildlife magazine and other outdoor publications for more than twenty years. As you’ll soon discover\, by using his skills as a naturalist and his love of cultural history\, Dennis has a unique way of interpreting what can be seen when exploring the local mountains. \nWe acknowledge that though we are the current stewards\, the land where we live and work is stolen land. Homeland of the Cherokee\, the Yuchi\, and the Catawba people\, acquired through genocide and forced removal. Wildlife Resources Commission will discuss the natural history of black bears in western North Carolina and how you can use that information to safely coexist with these North Carolina treasures.  BearWise\, now a national program\, started as a southeastern initiative to teach people how to safely coexist with bears.  It provides ways to prevent conflicts\, provides resources to resolve problems\, and encourages community initiatives to keep bears wild.  A question and answer session will follow the presentation. \nTanya Poole is a Conservation Initiatives Engagement Coordinator with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.  She has a 20-year career with the agency as an educator.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Western Carolina University and a master’s in Environmental Education from Montreat College. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Etowah Library’s calendar of events at this link. Join them for a fulfilling day of good work and companionship!  Wear long-sleeved shirts\, long pants\, and gloves\, and bring a pair of hand clippers if you have them. \nWorkdays are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will likely continue through the summer of 2024. \nVolunteers will meet at the FENCE parking lot on Hunting Country Road. For driving directions\, click here. After you turn onto the Fence property\, make a sharp right turn by the covered picnic area. Please note that while this endeavor is included on our calendar\, Conserving Carolina is not managing this activity. SUMMARY:White Oak Planting at Florence Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:The Florence family donated 300 acres to Conserving Carolina in 1996\, and was the first property that the land trust owned. Conserving Carolina adopted and improved nearly five miles of existing trails and has opened the land to the public as the Florence Nature Preserve. The Florence’s’ property was the first land to be protected in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge and it offered the first publicly accessible hiking trails in the area. This conservation project proved to be a springboard for much more land protection\, encouraging nearby landowners to pursue conservation. Today\, nearby nature preserves and trails include Wildcat Rock Trail\, Bearwallow Mountain\, the Trombatore Trail\, and Blue Ridge Pastures. \nOn this workday we will focus on planting white oak saplings to support oak regeneration on site\, with the hope of offering sustainable harvesting in the future for Cherokee artisans who use white oak for their basketry. Depending on time and the number of volunteers\, we may also manage the area to support montane oak hickory forests by removing competing species. \nWhere to Meet: 3836 Gerton Hwy\, Gerton\, NC 28735 \nYou will see a parking area\, next to a kiosk and an old stone chimney.
