But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special session of forest bathing and yoga at Transfiguration Preserve with Kiersten Angelos\, Certified Yoga instructor and Ayurvedic medicine practitioner. Participants will enjoy gentle yoga along the Rocky Broad River. \nBring your own yoga mat and props\, and a water bottle. \nDr. Mattie Decker’s friend Kiersten Angelos will begin a monthly offering here of Nature and Yoga! Kiersten is an ANFT-Certified Forest Therapy Guide and a Yoga Teacher certified in both Vinyasa yoga (200RYT) and Ayuryoga (500RYT).  She moved here from Albuquerque\, New Mexico where she was certified as an Ayurvedic Practitioner with The Ayurvedic Institute. With all of her training\, she helps guide others to live life harmoniously by incorporating wellness and holistic teachings. Kiersten has been on all of Dr. Mattie Decker’s walks since moving to Asheville\, and is delighted to bring this practice to the community. \nSpace is limited to 12 participants. Registration is required by RSVP below. Worthen\, ecologist and professor of biology at Furman University \n  \nDragonflies are important components of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems\, and their diversity is a good indicator of habitat quality. This presentation will focus on the general ecology of these fascinating organisms and will provide an overview of the diverse species that make the upstate their home. \nDr. Wade B. Worthen is the Rose J. Forgione Professor of Biology at Furman University\, where he has taught Biology and Ecology for over 30 years.  He has published more than 50 papers on community ecology\, with most examining the effects of competition and resource partitioning among dragonflies. SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Youngs Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Where: Youngs Mountain \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 4.2 miles\, moderate/strenuous; trail type – out and back \nElevation gain: 1\,200′ \nApproximately 50 minute drive \nLocated on the north side of Lake Lure\, this trail ascends 1\,200 feet in elevation to reach the top of scenic cliffs near the summit of the mountain. This dramatic destination offers panoramic views of Lake Lure\, Rumbling Bald\, Weed Patch Mountain\, and the lower Hickory Nut Gorge. On a clear day\, Mt. Mitchell and the Black Mountains are also visible. \nThis trail traverses 437 acres of land protected by Conserving Carolina. It is part of the emerging Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail network\, and will one day connect to other trails\, including the nearby Weed Patch Mountain Trail. The Youngs Mountain Trail also represents a likely future connection between the Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail and the proposed Wilderness Gateway State Trail\, which will ultimately extend as far east as Hickory! \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, September 1\, 2023.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m.\, unless otherwise specified. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ and/or Facebook page to see if the hike will take place. DESCRIPTION:Help Expand Bracken Preserve\nFinish Buying the Land and Start Building Trails!\nBrackenfest 2.0 is a “fun”draising ride to support the expansion of Bracken Preserve with 34 acres of beautiful forest land where we can build 2-3 miles of moderate trails. These trails will be inviting to more of our community—including athletes\, adventurers\, beginners\, children\, families\, seniors\, and people at various levels of ability and fitness. \nLast year\, we needed to act fast to buy the land while it was still for sale. In December 2022\, Conserving Carolina closed on the land\, but we still have a funding gap to cover the purchase\, so we can move on to the exciting part—building trails! \nLast year\, Brackenfest generated over $25\,000 in funding for the Bracken expansion. If we could match that success\, or do even better this year\, it would be a huge step toward creating these new trails for walking\, running\, hiking\, and biking. \nThere are two ways to participate in Brackenfest. You can raise funds by riding as many laps as possible—solo or as a relay—in three hours. DESCRIPTION:Date: September 23\, 2023 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat – in the orchard \nSpeaker: Steve O’Neil\, executive director of Earthshine Nature Programs \nIn this program\, Steve will be bringing several working examples of his favorite form of renewable energy – solar power.  He will explain how they work and even let you explore them in a hands-on show and tell.  Steve will also bring the SS NaSA PoD\, with its 1780-watt rooftop solar array\, as the centerpiece. \nSteve is from Hendersonville\, North Carolina and has worked as an interpretive naturalist for many years and with many organizations. Currently\, he is a naturalist and environmental science educator with Trails Carolina and he is the Executive Director of Earthshine Nature Programs. He received is Associate of Applied Science in Wildlife & Fisheries Management from Haywood Community College and his Bachelor of Science in Recreation Mgt./Outdoor Experiential Education from Appalachian State University\, and he loves to share his passion for forests\, mountains\, caves\, swamps\, and dunes – in search of all things and all places wild and wonderful – with youngsters and adults. \nGuests will park in the orchard at Laughing Waters Retreat\, accessed from the address below\, and walk up a little hill and gravel driveway to the pavilion.  If anyone has mobility challenges\, there is the opportunity to be dropped off closer to the pavilion. \nFor more information about Laughing Waters Retreat Center\, visit laughingwatersnc.com.

SUMMARY:Fall Hiking Series: Lookout Rock\, Montreat
DESCRIPTION:Where: Montreat Wilderness Area \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.5 miles\, moderate; trail type – loop \nElevation gain: 890′ \nApproximately 1 hour drive \nThe trailhead is accessed from the historic Montreat Conference Center.  The highlight of this hike is Lookout Rock\, a stone outcrop which offers views of the Montreat and Swannanoa valleys and the Seven Sisters range (or Middle Mountain). \nNestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains\, Montreat Conference Center has been “a place set apart” for spiritual rest\, renewal\, and recreation for over 100 years.  In 1897\, the Mountain Retreat Association purchased 4\,500 acres with the intention of building a Christian settlement.  In October of 1916\, Montreat Normal School opened as a four-year preparatory and two-year college geared at preparing young Christian women to become teachers; the first session had eight students in attendance.  In 1934\, Montreat Normal School was renamed Montreat College.  In 1945\, the college began a four-year degree program\, and in 1959 the college became a coeducational junior college and was re-named Montreat-Anderson College.   In 1974\, the Mountain Retreat Association and Montreat-Anderson College became two separate organizations.  In 1986\, the college again became a baccalaureate institution and in 1995\, returned to the original name of Montreat College.  In 2004\, the 2\,460-acre Montreat Wilderness Area was placed under a conservation easement that would permanently protect the mountain cove property from development.  To this day\, Montreat College has a four-year program on several campuses\, as well as a graduate program\, and the Montreat Conference Center offers a wide variety of meeting\, housing\, dining\, and recreational facilities for large conferences to private retreats and reunions. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. The hikes will meet at Ironwood Plaza (Conserving Carolina’s office) and will leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. Hikers should plan to return to the area in the late afternoon\, time varying with group size\, distance of hike\, and drive time. Car-pooling will be organized at the meeting location. If you’re coming from an area closer to the trailhead\, please contact Pam Torlina (email above) to make other meeting arrangements. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ and/or Facebook page to see if the hike will take place. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing with opportunities for reflections and expressions in art. This event will offer avenues for creative expression which participants in past Forest Bathing walks have requested. We will close with the traditional tea ceremony and\, depending on weather\, may return to the house or porch for closing sharing together. \nWe will open all of our senses as we take in the fall forest.  This event includes creative activities led by artist Jim Stilwell and forest bathing guided by Dr. Mattie Decker. \nArtist\, Jim Stilwell\nJim is a well-known artist in Asheville\, NC and has worked over many years guiding individuals to come to know their own inner artist. He recently taught a large class outdoors at Flying Cloud Farm and many were beginners who delighted in his intuitive ease of instruction (with gentle modeling and suggestions). \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nSpace is limited to 12 participants. Often it is not for a fish.” Fennel Hudson\, Fly Fishing – Fennel’s Journal – No. 5 \nJoin us as we approach fly fishing as a contemplative practice and a way to experience renewal beyond just “getting on the water.” Western North Carolina has some of the best fly fishing on the east coast. Participants will have opportunities to fish on a private section of the Broad River. All levels of skill are welcome\, but gear\, and instruction is not provided. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. With all of her training\, she helps guide others to live life harmoniously by incorporating wellness and holistic teachings. SUMMARY:Pleasant Grove Workday
DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPleasant Grove is a property owned by Conserving Carolina as of August 2017. It consists of around 110 acres of floodplain and was a dairy farm in its former life\, beginning in the early 1920s. In the mid-2000s\, the property was graded and slated to become a residential development known as Seven Falls. That development fell through. Now that Conserving Carolina owns the property\, removing non-native invasive species is a priority for increasing the conservation values of the property. Some of the non-native invasive species noted on the property are Japanese honeysuckle\, multiflora rose\, Japanese knotweed\, Chinese silvergrass\, autumn olive\, and privet. \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Chinese privet\, Japanese honeysuckle\, and multiflora rose from the property. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. Do you know the origin of that word ‘saunter?’ It’s a beautiful word. Back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land\, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going\, they would reply\, “A la sainte terre\,’ ‘To the Holy Land.’ And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers.
