DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2021 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area \nTo celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls will be hosted by Conserving Carolina on Tuesday\, December 21\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest\, at 7 p.m. Meet at the Hooker Falls parking lot on DuPont/Staton Road in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 30 participants. RSVP below.  There is no charge for this event. \nThe stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. In the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are invited to bring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the parking lot. Bring a flashlight for use when necessary. The event will be cancelled in case of heavy rain\, snow\, or ice. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the website event will be updated by 12 p.m. the day of the walk if cancellation is necessary. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. Walkers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and plenty of water. Please be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require.

DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPreviously used as an agricultural site\, the Mouth of Mud Creek is a 100+ acre habitat restoration project taken on by Conserving Carolina in 2015. Through several years of restoration work\, Conserving Carolina and several partnering organizations have restored this property back to its original ecological function\, a natural plain along the French Broad River. This remediation has provided significant ecological benefits\, such as creating important habitat for wildlife\, a forest buffer along the river\, and breeding sites for fish\, such as the elusive Muskellunge. Although major construction has been completed\, there is still a lot of on-going work to do! \nTo learn more about this site\, the Asheville Citizen Times recently put out a story about the Mouth of Mud Creek: HERE. \nWorkday Description:\nWe will be promoting the growth of native species by removing non-native invasive plant species\, such as Chinese privet and Japanese honeysuckle\, along Mud Creek and the French Broad River. We will remove these plants through hand pulling or cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface.\nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing. This walk will provide time to enjoy a 2 1/2 hour experience in the wonders of the wintry forest as we discover what the dynamic season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these walks are limited to 10 participants. Registration is required. \nA donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. Donations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. SUMMARY:Pleasant Grove Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPleasant Grove is a property owned by Conserving Carolina as of August 2017. It consists of around 110 acres of floodplain and was a dairy farm in its former life\, beginning in the early 1920s. In the mid-2000s\, the property was graded and slated to become a residential development known as Seven Falls. That development fell through. Now that Conserving Carolina owns the property\, removing non-native invasive species is a priority for increasing the conservation values of the property. Some of the non-native invasive species noted on the property are Japanese honeysuckle\, multiflora rose\, Japanese knotweed\, Chinese silvergrass\, autumn olive\, and privet. \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be removing various non-native invasive species\, such as Chinese privet\, Japanese honeysuckle\, and multiflora rose from the property. Using only mechanical techniques\, volunteers will be using pruners\, handsaws\, and pulling to remove invasive plant species. \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided; all materials are sanitized before and after each workday. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site.
