SUMMARY:A Nighttime Walk to Celebrate the Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2021 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area \nTo celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls will be hosted by Conserving Carolina on Tuesday\, December 21\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest\, at 7 p.m. Meet at the Hooker Falls parking lot on DuPont/Staton Road in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 30 participants. RSVP below.  There is no charge for this event. \nThe stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. In the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are invited to bring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the parking lot. Bring a flashlight for use when necessary. The event will be cancelled in case of heavy rain\, snow\, or ice. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the website event will be updated by 12 p.m. the day of the walk if cancellation is necessary. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. Walkers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and plenty of water. Please be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. GPS points (35.22458\, -82.27428) \nWe will supply tools and gloves\, but if you prefer your own\, the tools that we use are: hand pruners\, hand mattock\, and a folding hand saw; occasionally loppers. SUMMARY:Mud Creek Volunteer Workday
DESCRIPTION:Background Info:\nPreviously used as an agricultural site\, the Mouth of Mud Creek is a 100+ acre habitat restoration project taken on by Conserving Carolina in 2015. Through several years of restoration work\, Conserving Carolina and several partnering organizations have restored this property back to its original ecological function\, a natural plain along the French Broad River. This remediation has provided significant ecological benefits\, such as creating important habitat for wildlife\, a forest buffer along the river\, and breeding sites for fish\, such as the elusive Muskellunge. Although major construction has been completed\, there is still a lot of on-going work to do! \nTo learn more about this site\, the Asheville Citizen Times recently put out a story about the Mouth of Mud Creek: HERE. \nWorkday Description:\nWe will be promoting the growth of native species by removing non-native invasive plant species\, such as Chinese privet and Japanese honeysuckle\, along Mud Creek and the French Broad River. We will remove these plants through hand pulling or cutting them at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface.\nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances across rough terrain. All tools and gloves will be provided. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. You will get dirty\, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing. \nWhat to Bring:\nWater\nSnacks/Lunch\nLeather Work Gloves (if you have a personal pair)\nSmall Backpack\nChange of Clothes for drive home (recommended) \nWhat to Wear:\nFace mask\nClosed toed shoes that can navigate off-trail terrain and that can get dirty\nWork pants\, long sleeves; dress for the weather \nRSVP below.\nRSVP period will close on 01/10/22 at noon.\nQuestions?
