SUMMARY:Pollinator Paradise Partners
DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main access to the Oklawaha Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25 just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nClick here for a GPS dropped pin. \nCome when you can\, and leave when you need to. \nFor more information\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org. \nPlease RSVP below.

SUMMARY:Etowah Library Speaker Series: Hummingbirds - Flying Jewels
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 22\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 pm \nLocation: Etowah Library \nSpeaker: Pam Torlina\, Community Engagement Director for Conserving Carolina \nDiscover the astonishing world of hummingbirds—tiny\, dazzling birds whose speed\, beauty\, and biology defy belief. This program explores their iridescent colors\, remarkable flight abilities\, extreme metabolisms\, and fascinating behaviors\, from migration and torpor to courtship and nesting. Learn why hummingbirds are found only in the Western Hemisphere\, how they evolved alongside flowering plants\, and what makes the Andes a hotspot for their diversity. The presentation also highlights species found in North America\, including rare winter visitors to the Southeast\, and offers practical ways you can support hummingbirds in your own backyard. A captivating blend of natural history\, evolution\, and conservation\, this program reveals why hummingbirds truly deserve their name—flying jewels. \nPam Torlina is the Community Engagement Director at Conserving Carolina. With over 30 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator\, Pam has dedicated nearly two decades to advancing the Conservancy’s mission in the Carolinas. She holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of South Carolina Upstate\, and before joining Conserving Carolina she worked with a variety of conservation and education organizations — including South Carolina State Parks\, the City of Greenville Parks & Recreation Youth Bureau\, and Haliburton Forest in Ontario\, Canada. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Etowah Library’s calendar of events at this link. \n \nThe Etowah Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

We welcome your enthusiasm and are happy to share our knowledge with you. If you enjoy gardening (or the idea of gardening)\, and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: World Labyrinth Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing. This walk will provide time to enjoy a 3 hour experience in the winter forest as we discover what the dynamic season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these events are limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. \nDonations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. A donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. Donations of $35 or more will include Conserving Carolina membership benefits. \nDONATE HERE \nLEARN MORE ABOUT FOREST BATHING \nRSVP below.

SUMMARY:Hike with Hemlock Restoration Initiative at John's Rock in Brevard
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Sunday\, May 3rd at 8:00 am for an educational hemlock and birding hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative and Conserving Carolina. \n\nThis early morning hike will begin at the John Rock Loop trailhead and will lead up to a stand of hemlocks recently re-treated by HRI. While we hike\, your hike leaders will cover the ecological importance of hemlocks with a focus on their role in bird habitat. We will also cover what is threatening the hemlocks\, what is being done about it\, and more. Once we get to the hemlock stand at Picklesimer Fields\, we will take some time to silently bird watch. Hemlocks are extremely important for bird habitat\, especially for species such as the Black-throated green warbler\, the Blackburnian warbler\, the Blue-headed vireo\, and the Acadian flycatcher. \n\nThe hike is a moderately strenuous 2 mile out-and-back with a creek crossing. We will plan to arrive back at our vehicles at 11am. More information about the trail can be found here. \nIn case of poor weather\, this hike will be rescheduled to Sunday\, May 24th. \n*****RSVP is required***** \nPlease register at the Hemlock Restoration Initiative here.

SUMMARY:Pollinator Paradise Partners
DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! No green thumb? We welcome your enthusiasm and are happy to share our knowledge with you. If you enjoy gardening (or the idea of gardening)\, and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. \nWe will meet at the North Main Street access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25 just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be  a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nClick here for the dropped pin. \nCome when you can\, and leave when you need to. \n  \nFor more information\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org. \n

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: Environmentally Friendly Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 12\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Steve Pettis\, Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent with the Henderson County Cooperative Extension \n\nJoin us for a presentation on Environmentally Friendly Landscaping from Henderson County Extension Agent and host of the Gardening in the Mountains Radio Show and Podcast\, Steve Pettis. Steve will discuss environmentally friendly garden techniques that you can implement this spring to make your garden a friendly place for wildlife including pollinating insects. Steve believes at least part of our landscapes should mimic nature as much as possible. Healthy urban and suburban environments can be achieved by reducing lawns\, holistic tree health care and protection\, using biorational pest control methods and increasing biodiversity utilizing native plants in naturalistically designed plantings. \nSteve has been in the plant business for 35 years and holds an undergraduate degree in horticulture and a Master’s degree in plant protection and pest management. As a NC State University County Agent\, he works with home gardeners\, landscape professionals and local municipalities to make our built environments more natural and environmentally friendly. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
