SUMMARY:Pollinator Paradise Partners
DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! No green thumb? We welcome your enthusiasm and are happy to share our knowledge with you. If you enjoy gardening (or the idea of gardening)\, and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main Street access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25 just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be  a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nClick here for the dropped pin. \nCome when you can\, and leave when you need to. \nFor more information\, or to sign  up\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org. \nPlease RSVP below.

SUMMARY:Guided Bird Walk along the Green River!
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 23\, 2026 \nTime: 8:00 a.m. \nLocation: Swiftwater Farm \nGuide: Mike Resch \nJoin us for an easy 2-hour guided bird walk in search of residents and Neotropical migrants that visit the region to raise their young. We will be exploring open grassy fields\, brush\, and edges along the Green River where we will have the opportunity to see and hear a large diversity of species. Highlights along the river should include Louisiana Waterthrush and Yellow-throated Warbler. \nMike has been a birder since getting his first pair of binoculars at 8 years of age. His technical specialty as an environmental engineer is in cleaning up hazardous waste sites. Since retiring to Hendersonville\, NC\, Mike has enjoyed birding the many excellent birding spots in the NC mountains and the upstate of SC. He is a co-coordinator for the western NC region of the North Carolina Bird Atlas and a guide for Ventures Birding Tours. Mike/Ventures Birding Tours has graciously donated their time to lead this walk. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. Be sure to bring your binoculars! \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by e-mail\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, by 7 a.m. on the day of the walk and/or check the Conserving Carolina website to see if the walk will take place. \nSpace is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required; RSVP below. \nFor more information\, email pam@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: From Soil to Supper - Where Your Garden and the World Grow Together
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 19\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Mike Odle\, gardener and land steward \nJoin us for a conversation about how curiosity\, attention\, and imagination can transform the way we see and work with our gardens. Drawing on decades of hands-on experience growing food in a wide range of soil types and conditions\, Mike will share practical ways to observe and support the life of the garden right now\, while also exploring how our individual gardens can contribute to the vitality of our communities and the wider world. \nPart discussion and part exploration\, this program encourages gardeners of all experience levels to experiment\, learn from the garden itself\, and discover how their unique approach can help both their garden—and their community—grow. \nMike Odle is a lifelong gardener and land steward with more than two decades of hands-on experience growing food in a wide range of soil types and conditions. He has worked with many different farmers\, gardeners\, and communities and enjoys helping people see the garden as a living relationship between soil\, plants\, and people. Mike teaches in a conversational style that invites participants to share their experiences and discover new possibilities within their own gardens. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series: Bugs in Motion - Filming Insects to Appreciate Biodiversity & Advance Science
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 16\, 2026 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Dr. Adrian Smith\, Head of the Insect Behavior Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University \nArthropods and insects are some of the most inspiring and incredible creatures that live right outside (and sometimes inside!) our door. But because of their small size and cryptic lifestyles\, it can be hard to see and appreciate what they do. As a research scientist and a media maker\, Dr. Adrian Smith works to visualize\, study\, and tell the stories of these creatures. During this presentation\, he’ll show some of his work filming the behaviors of things like trap-jaws ants\, beetles\, moths\, springtails\, and more. His goal is to illuminate the lives of animals to both advance research science but also create new ways of appreciating our own local biodiversity. \nDr. Adrian Smith is the Head of the Insect Behavior Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University. He is also the creator of the popular YouTube channel Ant Lab. \nRSVP is requested below\, but not necessary to attend the event! Please join us! \n \nThe Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Preserve. \n*Walnut Creek Preserve is private property and guests are only allowed on the property by invitation (a planned event or scheduled group).  Thank you. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: Environmentally Friendly Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 12\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Steve Pettis\, Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent with the Henderson County Cooperative Extension \n\nJoin us for a presentation on Environmentally Friendly Landscaping from Henderson County Extension Agent and host of the Gardening in the Mountains Radio Show and Podcast\, Steve Pettis. Steve will discuss environmentally friendly garden techniques that you can implement this spring to make your garden a friendly place for wildlife including pollinating insects. Steve believes at least part of our landscapes should mimic nature as much as possible. Healthy urban and suburban environments can be achieved by reducing lawns\, holistic tree health care and protection\, using biorational pest control methods and increasing biodiversity utilizing native plants in naturalistically designed plantings. \nSteve has been in the plant business for 35 years and holds an undergraduate degree in horticulture and a Master’s degree in plant protection and pest management. As a NC State University County Agent\, he works with home gardeners\, landscape professionals and local municipalities to make our built environments more natural and environmentally friendly. \n \nThe Saluda Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Polk County Public Libraries Systems. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Hike with Hemlock Restoration Initiative at John's Rock in Brevard
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Sunday\, May 3rd at 8:00 am for an educational hemlock and birding hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative and Conserving Carolina. \n\nThis early morning hike will begin at the John Rock Loop trailhead and will lead up to a stand of hemlocks recently re-treated by HRI. While we hike\, your hike leaders will cover the ecological importance of hemlocks with a focus on their role in bird habitat. We will also cover what is threatening the hemlocks\, what is being done about it\, and more. Once we get to the hemlock stand at Picklesimer Fields\, we will take some time to silently bird watch. Hemlocks are extremely important for bird habitat\, especially for species such as the Black-throated green warbler\, the Blackburnian warbler\, the Blue-headed vireo\, and the Acadian flycatcher. \n\nThe hike is a moderately strenuous 2 mile out-and-back with a creek crossing. We will plan to arrive back at our vehicles at 11am. More information about the trail can be found here. \nIn case of poor weather\, this hike will be rescheduled to Sunday\, May 24th. \n*****RSVP is required***** \nPlease register at the Hemlock Restoration Initiative here.

\n  \nFor more information\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org. \n
