SUMMARY:Special Film Screening of "The Extraordinary Caterpillar — A Film Celebration of Nature’s Unsung Heroes"
DESCRIPTION:When: Tuesday\, March 3\, 7:00 p.m. \nWhere: Tryon Theatre\, 45 S. Trade St.\, Tryon\, NC 28782 \nJoin us for a free community movie night – a collaboration of Conserving Carolina\, The Gardening For Life Project\, and the Congregational Church\, UCC in Tryon. \nThe new documentary The Extraordinary Caterpillar shines a bright spotlight on one of the most overlooked — yet absolutely essential — creatures in our ecosystems: caterpillars. Through stunning visuals and engaging storytelling\, the film reveals how these tiny leaf-munchers fuel biodiversity\, sustain bird populations\, and help keep natural systems in balance. \nTo celebrate the release and help our community deepen its connection to the natural world\, local organizations are hosting a free community screening this March in the heart of the foothills. \n\n\n\nAbout the Filmmakers\nThe documentary The Extraordinary Caterpillar was written\, directed\, and produced by acclaimed filmmaker Jeff McKay\, whose work often explores the deep connection between humans and the natural world. The film was produced by Merit Motion Pictures in partnership with Edgeland Films Inc.\, and features stunning macro cinematography by naturalist Sam Jaffe of The Caterpillar Lab. It also includes insights from leading scientists and conservationists — including entomologist Doug Tallamy — to bring the hidden world of caterpillars and their vital ecological role to life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy Caterpillars Matter More Than You Think \nCaterpillars may look small and humble\, but they are ecological powerhouses. Scientists have found that they play a critical role in supporting wildlife and maintaining healthy habitats. \nHere’s why they’re so important: \n\nWithout caterpillars we don’t have our magical butterflies and moths!\nEssential food source for birds: Many songbirds rely on caterpillars to feed their young because they are packed with protein and nutrients.\nBiodiversity boosters: A rich diversity of caterpillar species indicates a healthy ecosystem with strong plant-animal relationships.\nNative plant connections: Many caterpillars depend on specific native host plants — highlighting why planting native species is one of the best ways to support wildlife.\n\nThe film beautifully illustrates these connections\, helping viewers see how even the smallest organisms can have massive ecological impact. \n\n\n\nView the trailer here. \nSpace is limited and pre-registration is required.\n  \nThe Box Office and theatre will be open at 6:30 p.m. Please arrive before 7:00 p.m. to allow time for check-in\, concessions\, and finding your seat.\n  \nConcessions will be available for purchase\, and no outside liquids are permitted in the theater.\n \nFor more information or questions\, contact pam@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Pollinator Paradise Partners
DESCRIPTION:Conserving Carolina is creating a pollinator garden along the scenic Oklawaha Greenway—and we need your green thumbs! If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. Come be part of something that benefits the whole community—humans\, bees\, butterflies\, and beyond! \nWe will meet at the North Main access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25 just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nClick here for a GPS dropped pin. \nCome when you can\, and leave when you need to. \nFor more information\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org. \nPlease RSVP below.

SUMMARY:Planting Butternut Tree Saplings Along the French Broad River at Pleasant Grove
DESCRIPTION:**Background** \nButternut (Juglans cinerea) is a globally threatened tree species\, largely due to the introduction of Thousand Cankers disease\, which has significantly reduced its original range. \nWe will plant locally sourced\, potentially resistant tree saplings along the French Broad River at our Pleasant Grove site. These saplings were grown by our Natural Resources Manager\, Torry Nergart\, with nuts collected from Conserving Carolina’s conservation lands. \nBy participating in this project\, you will make a significant contribution to an ongoing effort to identify resistant trees and support our national partners with the data we collect. \nJoin us in this important initiative and learn more about these environmentally significant trees as we work. \nWe’ll supply the tools and materials.   Dress appropriately for the weather conditions\, and bring drinking water\, snacks\, and your lunch. \n

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of forest bathing. This walk will provide time to enjoy a 3 hour experience in the winter forest as we discover what the dynamic season invites us to explore. \nMattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTo keep everyone safe\, these events are limited to 12 participants. Registration is required. \nDonations are not required and the amount of your gift is entirely up to you. A donation of $30 is suggested for forest bathing walks\, for those who are able. Donations of $35 or more will include Conserving Carolina membership benefits. \nDONATE HERE \nLEARN MORE ABOUT FOREST BATHING \nRSVP below.

\nFor more information or to sign-up\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Unregulated Drinking Water Contaminants
DESCRIPTION:The Safe Drinking Water Act regulates the amount of organic and inorganic chemicals in public water systems to levels that are considered safe for human consumption.  The Clean Water Act regulates the amount of  organic and inorganic chemicals that can be discharged to rivers and lakes from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants to levels that are considered safe for the environment. \nContaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) is a category of  unregulated contaminants that can often be detected in the discharge of treated wastewater.at trace to low levels. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) monitors CEC levels in rivers and lakes downstream of municipal and industrial wastewater discharges as well as in treated municipal drinking water.  The EPA will regulate CECs such as PFAS (a.k.a.\, forever chemicals) and pharmaceuticals (e.g.\, hormones\, antibiotics) when they are determined to be present in public drinking water at levels considered to be potentially hazardous to human health. \nJoin us as environmental consultant\, Ted Volskay explains the key aspects and the importance of the Safe Drinking Water Act\, Clean Water Act\, and Contaminants of Emerging Concern. Ted will also identify common sources of CECs and explain and give an update on the EPAs regulation of six PFAS compounds in drinking water and the recent partial rollback of these regulations. Ted will also provide recent municipal water quality reports pertaining to PFAS for the cities of Hendersonville (NC)\, Greenville (SC)\, Charlotte (NC)\, and Rock Hill (SC). Finally\, he’ll offer practical ways to minimize exposure to PFAS in home drinking water. \nTed Volskay has been a member of the legal women voters of Greenville County\, South Carolina for 30 years and he has served in a number of roles\, including board secretary\, interim president\, and chair of the legal women voters of South Carolina environmental work group. Ted received his B.S. in chemistry from the University of South Florida in 1981. After graduating\, he joined the Navy and served as an officer on the James Monroe until 1986.
\nWe will meet at the North Main access to the Greenway (a gravel parking lot to the left if coming from Hwy 25) just before the bridge over Mud Creek). There will be  a Conserving Carolina sign at the entrance. \nThe best way to find the access area is to put N. Main Automotive\, Hendersonville in your GPS\, and that will get you almost there. Go a little further and then pull into the parking lot mentioned above.  Go left on the Greenway and walk a short distance\, and you will find the garden on the right side\, marked with Conserving Carolina signs. \nCome when you can\, and leave when you need to. \nFor more information or to sign-up\, contact Mary Miller @mary@conservingcarolina.org.
