If you enjoy gardening and want to help create a beautiful\, welcoming space for pollinators and people alike\, come join us! \nOur vision is to grow more than just flowers—we’re building a vibrant\, family-friendly oasis that serves as a hands-on educational space. It will highlight the importance of native plants and local pollinators\, inspiring both kids and adults to connect with nature. Our plan is to utilize the gardens for community outreach programs\, workshops\, and guided tours to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators and native plant species. In one half of the large garden bed\, we plan to create an interactive garden for families with children. On future workdays we may work on the hardscape by installing paths\, borders\, and structures for climbing plants\, and other things for kids to enjoy.  We welcome your ideas and creativity! \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener or just want to get your hands dirty for a good cause\, your help makes a difference. This program aims to introduce participants to the native mammals\, reptiles and amphibians\, fish\, insects\, and birds of South Carolina\, while emphasizing the importance of preservation and conservation and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world and inspire active involvement in conservation efforts. \nMelissa Fuentes was raised in Eagle Pass\, TX\, a small border town nestled against the rugged beauty of the Texas hill country. Her childhood was filled with adventure—hunting\, catching armadillos and snakes\, and immersing herself in the wild landscapes that shaped her love for the natural world. That passion soon extended beyond exploration and into academia\, where she developed a deep curiosity for science\, literature\, and the arts. \nAfter high school\, Melissa pursued her education at two universities\, earning degrees in Biology\, English\, and the arts—all centered on her lifelong commitment to teaching others about nature. Her academic journey led her to further studies\, but fate intervened when she was offered a position at Clemson University. As the curator of the Bob and Betsy Museum of Natural History\, she found the perfect space to merge scholarship with storytelling. SUMMARY:French Broad River Clean-Up with MountainTrue
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are invited to help clean up trash with Conserving Carolina\, French Broad Paddle Trail Manager\, Jack Henderson\, and other members of MountainTrue’s French Broad Riverkeeper team. \nThe clean-up will be boat-based and focus on the French Broad River in Transylvania and Henderson counties between Penrose Boating Access Area and Blantyre Park. \nMountainTrue can provide canoes (with paddles and PFDs) to volunteers with previous paddling experience\, but attendees are otherwise requested to bring their own boats. MountainTrue will also provide gloves\, trash bags\, a dumpster for trash removal\, and a shuttle to the put-in. \nIf you need to borrow a boat from MountainTrue\, please use the boat request form. (We have a limited number of boats so you must complete this form to borrow a boat). \nALL participants\, regardless of whether you are borrowing a boat or bringing your own\, must sign-up through this “sign-up” link to ensure we can adhere to safety standards for the maximum number of participants. \nPlease bring: \n\nPFD if bringing your own boat.\nAppropriate clothing and footwear for paddling and cleaning up trash (closed-toed shoes recommended).\nDrinking water\, snacks\, lunch.\nChange of clothes for after the event.\n\nKids under the age of 18 are allowed as long as accompanied by a parent/guardian AND are experienced paddlers. \nTo thank you for your time\, volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. Please email members@mountaintrue.org to request yours. \nREGISTER HERE. \nThis event has been generously-sponsored by Explore Brevard through the Transylvania County TDA’s Transylvania Always grant program. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: A Brief History of Air - air\, air pollution\, and solutions
DESCRIPTION:Asheville air\, clean and dirty \nThe history of air and the science of air pollution is part of the history of Western North Carolina. We will take a brief look into the past\, present\, and future through the lens of combustion and air pollution. We will discuss how science was used to help clean North Carolina’s air\, and to continue to study the air and keep it clean for both individual and environmental health. \nKeith Bamberger works for the Division of Air Quality out of the Asheville Regional Office of the Department of Environment Quality. His primary responsibility is coordinating the Western North Carolina Air Awareness Program. This program includes direct education and outreach to students and the general public\, supporting local governments\, non-governmental agencies\, and community resources groups in understanding air quality\, environmental health\, and the intersection between their programs and the health of the air. His responsibilities also include working on many statewide initiatives and committees\, and partnerships include NASA Earth to Sky Partnership\, the Land of Sky Clean Vehicles Coalition\, the Asheville Buncombe Air Quality Agency\, NC Soil and Water Conservation District\, the North Carolina Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs\, the Environmental Educators of North Carolina and others. Past work includes nature centers\, museums\, the National Park Service\, and North Carolina 4-H. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. You don’t have to drink at Green Drinks\, just come and listen. Trailside Brewing Co. offers beer\, wine\, cider\, prosecco and non-alcoholic beverages. DESCRIPTION:We’ll be joining Green Riverkeeper with MountainTrue to Clean the Lower Green! \nWe will meet at the Green Riverkeeper Office in Saluda\, NC at 10 am and carpool down to the river. The exact clean-up location will be announced in an email closer to the event date. \nThis event will be land and river-based. If you want to be on the river\, please plan to bring your own boat (MountainTrue is not providing boats for loan for this event) and appropriate river gear (pfd\, helmet\, paddles etc). \nPlease wear closed-toe shoes\, weather-appropriate attire (including things you don’t mind getting wet). Bring drinking water\, lunch/snacks\, and perhaps a change of clothes for afterward. We will have plenty of trash bags and gloves for use\, along with some hand tools such as shovels\, loppers\, etc.; however\, feel free to bring your own if you would like. \nAll volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. SUMMARY:Green River Library Speaker Series: Fungal Foundations - How Mushrooms Build the Earth Beneath Our Feet
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 24\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Green River Library \nSpeakers: Olga Katić \nJoin Olga\, of Mushroom Mountain\, for an engaging journey into the underground world of terrestrial fungi\, with a spotlight on Stropharia rugosoannulata—the mighty King Stropharia. Discover how mushrooms act as ecosystem engineers\, transforming woody debris and organic matter into rich\, fertile soil. This lecture explores the essential role of saprophytic fungi in building soil structure\, retaining moisture\, supporting plant life\, and even cleaning up toxins. You’ll also learn about practical applications in permaculture\, gardening\, and habitat restoration using mushrooms like King Stropharia. Whether you’re a mycophile\, a conservationist\, or just fungi-curious\, this talk will leave you seeing soil in a whole new light. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. This program was accepted by Health Departments of 7 states\, and counting\, and also endorsed by the FDA. In her free time\, Olga loves to be in the woods\, picking mushrooms and wild plants\, and of course taking tons of pictures of anything she finds. DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 9am –  12pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.
