SUMMARY:A Nighttime Walk to Celebrate the Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2024 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area\, first/lower parking lot \nJoin us to celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – with a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nStarting from the lower/first parking lot\, participants will be asked to enjoy a silent walk in the darkness\, without the aid of flashlights. (Red flashlights are permitted\, but only if needed/when necessary.) The stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. Once arriving at the falls\, in the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining (white light) flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are asked to: \n\nbring (white light) flashlights to help illuminate the waterfall when we arrive\nonly us red flashlights along the trail and as needed – we’d like to invite you to use your senses and realize how well you can see and enjoy the wilderness in the dark!\nwalk in silence to the waterfall\nbring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the lower/first parking lot\n\nThe event will be cancelled in case of heavy rain\, snow\, or ice. Pre-registration is required\, please RSVP below.  There is no charge for this event. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the website event will be updated by 12 p.m. on the day of the walk if cancellation is necessary. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. DESCRIPTION:December 7th 10:00 – 2:00 “Writing in Nature” \nWhere:  Walnut Creek Preserve\, 179 Wood Thrush Lane\, Mill Spring\, NC 28756 \nWhat:  “Writing in Nature” includes an experience of Shinrin Yoku\, known as “Forest Bathing” with Mattie Decker\, ANFT certified guide and mindfulness teacher.  We gather in a circle\, with mindfulness meditation before embarking into the forest to “find our spot”\, our tree\, or place we are drawn to sit and write. Afterward there are refreshments shared\, as we tell about our experiences\, often reading what we’ve written. Participants are also encouraged to bring writing they are working on\, or journals to continue projects they are midst. There are always surprises\, and amazement in how the medicine of the forest provides us what is uniquely needed for each of us. For new writers\, or those who are writers\, this experience offers a dimension of awakening to the deep relationship we each have in Nature. \nDirections: How to Get to Walnut Creek Preserve \nPlease note that the preserve is open to the public only by invitation for educational events. Go 1 mile to the intersection with Big Level Road; turn left\, go 0.2 miles and take the first right onto Aden Green Road. Follow Aden Green for 0.4 mile and turn left on Wood Thrush Lane and into Walnut Creek Preserve. Take the first left onto Conservatory Lane\, which takes you to the parking area for the nature center on the right. \nDirections from Hendersonville \nGo east on I-26 for 18 miles. Take exit 67 from I-26 (exit for Rutherfordton\, Columbus\, Tryon\, etc.)\, and then take the left fork of the exit (Highway 74) toward Forest City and Charlotte. Take the first exit off of Highway 74 (Exit 163) to Mill Spring. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp (you are on Highway 108). Go 3 miles to blinking light at Highway 9. Turn left (north) toward Lake Lure. \nGo 5 miles on Highway 9 to McGuinn Road (McGuinn’s store/Exxon on the right corner). Turn right and go 1 mile to intersection with Big Level Road (dead end). Turn left. Go .3 miles to Aden Green Road on the right. Turn right and go .4 miles to Walnut Creek Preserve drive entrance on the left at Herbarium Lane. (There is a gate at the driveway\, which will be open for events). Turn left onto the drive\, through the black gate and then left onto Conservatory Lane. Come up the drive to the Nature Center parking lot on the right. \n

DESCRIPTION:Photo by Diane Carr/AllTrails.com \nWhere: Holmes Educational State Forest \nMeet: Ironwood Square\, Conserving Carolina’s office\, 847 Case Street\, Hendersonville\, NC\, at 8:30 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 3.9  miles\, moderate/strenuous; trail type – lollipop \nElevation gain: 767′ \nApproximately 20 minute drive \nHikers will follow the Short Cut trail starting in the valley of Crab Creek. After following the Short Cut trail for a short distance the group will take the Forest Demonstration trail with opportunities to enjoy the beautiful forest\, a small pond\, and views of the surrounding area. The trail ascends approximately 767′ before descending back down the mountain\, making a loop in the 235 acre Forest. \n[Except from their website] Holmes Educational State Forest has been providing the citizens of North Carolina a living outdoor classroom where visitors of all ages can learn about the local natural forest environment since 1977. The forest\, which started out as a nursery developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps\, has now become one of seven educational state forests located throughout the state. The land along Crab Creek Road was obtained by the state in the mid-1930’s to provide North Carolina landowners White pine and Yellow poplar seedlings. By the late 1960’s the state moved the nursery to Avery County and developed Holmes has a small state forest. Since then\, the forest has grown into a diverse woodscape that includes many other plant species from herbs on the forest floor to towering forest trees. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Registration\, by RSVP below\, opens at 9:00 am Friday\, November 1\, 2024.   \nContact pam@conservingcarolina.org with additional questions. \nConserving Carolina is sponsoring a Friday hiking series this fall that is free\, guided\, and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nTransfiguration Preserves members will be hosting their in person events at the Walnut Creek Preserve Anne Suratt Nature Center this month\, and perhaps until our roads are safe for travel to Transfiguration Preserve in Bat Cave after Hurricane Helene. \n“WRITING IN NATURE” has been creating a community of writers for nearly a year now. Participants who feel deep kinship with the Earth and all of life and who come together in the sanctity of nature\, for respite\, contemplation and freedom of expression. DESCRIPTION:Green Built Alliance has a 22-year history of advancing sustainable living\, green building and climate justice through inspired action\, community education and collaborative partnerships in Western North Carolina and beyond. Jamie Wine\, Clean Energy Program Manager\, will talk about how the membership-based nonprofit makes sustainability more accessible to the community through its efforts distributing 25\,000 copies of the annual Green Home & Living Guide (formerly known as the Green Building Directory); coordinating the Appalachian Offsets carbon-offsetting program; managing the Blue Horizons Project community campaign to help create our region’s clean energy future; and administering green-building certifications through the Green Built Homes program. You can learn more about Green Built Alliance at greenbuilt.org. \nJamie Wine joined Green Built Alliance in the spring of 2022. He hails most recently from New Orleans where he managed an education and outreach program for energy efficiency and building science across Louisiana. Before that\, in Seattle\, California and Boston\, he developed nonprofit programs for varied audiences like students in grades K-12\, ocean advocates\, traffic engineers\, community organizers\, adults\, families and youth. Jamie is deeply committed to community empowerment through education\, fighting the climate crisis\, and bringing environmental peace to disadvantaged communities. While an executive decision is often easier\, he believes a collaborative approach yields a more satisfying result. This engaging talk offers a comprehensive overview of these remarkable creatures\, exploring their unique life cycle\, habitat preferences\, and the factors contributing to their alarming decline. \nJoin us on a journey through the rivers and streams that serve as the home for these hidden gems. Discover the intricate relationship between freshwater mussels and their environment\, as we explore their vital role in maintaining water quality and stream bed stability. Gain insight into the fascinating reproductive strategies and the complex interactions that shape their existence. \nHowever\, this talk also sheds light on the challenges faced by freshwater mussels. Learn about the various factors that have led to their decline\, including habitat degradation\, pollution\, and changes in river flow patterns. Explore the interconnectedness of these factors and their impact on the delicate balance of freshwater ecosystems. \nBy the end of this talk\, you will develop a deeper appreciation for the significance of freshwater mussels and the urgent need for their conservation. Discover how researchers and conservationists are coming together to protect these imperiled species\, implementing innovative strategies to restore their habitats and raise awareness about their importance. \n  \nHans\, a freshwater mussel enthusiast\, developed a passion for these aquatic creatures during his internship with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) while completing his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He gained invaluable expertise in captive propagation techniques and identifying diverse mussel species across the aquatic habitats of Western North Carolina. \nFurthering his education at Appalachian State University\, Hans earned his master’s degree and conducted his thesis research comparing freshwater mussel taxonomic relationships using a combination of DNA analysis\, geographic range data\, and shell morphology. This academic pursuit deepened his understanding of these fascinating organisms. \nFollowing his academic journey\, Hans dedicated three years to the NCWRC\, focusing on the conservation of freshwater mussels through the preservation of both wild and captive populations. DESCRIPTION:Date: November 2\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail at Bradley Nature Preserve \nDistance: 2.5 miles\, easy\, loop \nElevation gain: 130′ \nGuide: William Caldwell\, the National Park Ranger for the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail \nJoin us for a presentation\, Path to Liberty\, at Walnut Creek Preserve at 10:30 a.m. (click here for more information about the speaker series presentation and to register) then join us for a 2.5 mile interpretive walk at the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail at Bradley Nature Preserve led by Ranger William Caldwell\, the National Park Ranger for the trail. This hike begins with an approximately 1.25-mile hike to the banks of the Green River Along the way\, participants will learn the story the trail and how the trail was used in 1780. After arriving at the banks of the Green River and taking a short break\, the trail loops back for another 1.25-miles\, returning to the trailhead and where Ranger Caldwell can answer questions and discuss more details about the American Revolution and the Overmountain Victory Trail. Approximate time for the total walk is 2 hours. \nSpace is limited to 30 participants and pre-registration is required. Scroll down to RSVP and register for the walk! \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring plenty of water and a snack for yourself. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina.org by 12:30 p.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ to see if the hike will take place. Please also remember to bring any medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). Hike leaders will carry a first aid kit; however\, it may not contain specific medication for your individual needs. \nBefore each hike\, you will be asked to sign a waiver form. For your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. \nMeet up for the walk is a Alexander’s Ford at Bradley Nature Preserve (see below).

DESCRIPTION:Date: November 2\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. – with optional guided interpretive hike at the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail at Bradley Nature Preserve at 2 p.m. (see below for more information) \nPresentation Location: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: William Caldwell\, the National Park Ranger for the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail \nDid you know that the Blue Ridge Mountains played a role in the American Revolution? Join National Park Ranger William Caldwell to learn about the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail and the story of how frontier settlers from the Blue Ridge Mountains played a key role in the American Revolution and securing our nation’s independence. This lecture is approximately 45 minutes followed by time for questions. Please RSVP below to register for the speaker series presentation. \nWilliam Caldwell is the National Park Ranger for the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail which consists of a 330-mile network of roads and hiking trails following the route used during the American Revolution by Patriot frontiersmen through Virginia\, Tennessee\, North Carolina\, and South Carolina to reach the pivotal 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain. Established as a National Historic Trail in 1980\, Overmountain Victory features a Commemorative Motor Route and growing network of hiking trails allowing visitors to retrace that historic journey. SUMMARY:Native Plant Gardening Group
DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 9AM – Noon at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  For the warmer months we will work from 9AM – Noon.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 4:00PM.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.
