SUMMARY:Guided Nature Walk – Looking for Mushrooms with Todd Elliott!
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Todd Elliott!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 24th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nTodd Elliott’s studies in biodiversity and interrelationships in nature have taken him to remote corners of the world to explore tropical rainforests\, deserts\, temperate forests\, beaches\, and high mountains on six continents. He is particularly interested in edible and medicinal mushrooms and plants and their importance to humans. Todd is an author of the Timber Press field guide Mushrooms of the Southeast and has published academic literature on various aspects of fungal ecology and taxonomy. Todd received his undergraduate degree in interpretive natural history from Warren Wilson College (USA) and his PhD in ecology from the University of New England (Australia). He enjoys sharing his research and knowledge of the natural world through presentations\, workshops\, and consultations for many different organizations in the US and abroad. To read more about Todd’s research\, check out his website: https://toddelliott.weebly.com/.  Todd will have copies of his book available for purchase\, so if you’re interested\, please bring cash or a check. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Please bring a digging tool (shovel preferred) and gloves. Pots will be provided but if you have some at home\, please bring them! DESCRIPTION:Date: June 19\, 2024 \nTime: 11:00 am \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat Center \nConserving Carolina volunteers are invited to join us to explore Laughing Waters Retreat Center and the Hickory Nut Forest Eco-community located in Gerton\, NC. \nHickory Nut Forest (HNF)\, an intentionally planned community\, was founded by the late John Myers and his wife Jane Lawson in 2006.  HNF has 20 homesites on 25 acres with an additional 35-acre conservation-easement common area\, which is protected through Conserving Carolina. Community members also have access to 60 acres of adjacent property which includes Laughing Waters Retreat Center and an organic orchard and gardens. Currently\, the community has 9 completed homes with several more in the planning stages. The pillars of the community are Earth Stewardship\, Green Built Homes\, Renewable Energy\, Healthy Food\, and Education. \nStarting at Laughing Waters Retreat Center\, we will learn about the history and intentions of the site and the activities that the Center offers. Then\, we will tour the micro – hydro system which powers all the buildings of Laughing Waters from Hickory Nut Creek. \nAfter the tour of Laughing Waters\, we will carpool to Hickory Nut Forest\, less than half a mile up 74A\, to see and learn more about the green community. \nParticipants are invited to enjoy a hike at the nearby Florence Nature Preserve or Wildcat Rock trails after the tour of the Eco-community. \nBe prepared for walking on uneven surfaces and be sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a snack bag and/or lunch and plenty of water for yourself. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Where: Bearwallow Mountain \nMeet: Bearwallow Mountain Trailhead\, Bearwallow Mountain Road \nTime: 11:00 a.m. \nWhat to expect: 2–mile\, easy/moderate; trail type-loop; elevation change ~500′ \n  \nJoin Conserving Carolina & Blue Ridge Humane Society for a hike & \nwalk an adoptable dog!\nHikers\, and their dogs\, are invited to join Conserving Carolina and Blue Ridge Humane Society (BRHS) on Wednesday\, April 24th at 11 a.m. for an approximately 2-mile hike up Bearwallow Mounatain. Conserving Carolina’s Community Engagement Director\, Pam Torlina\, will lead the hike from the trail head off of Bearwallow Mountain Road. \nThis is a great opportunity to give an adoptable dog a break from the Adoption Center and allow them to enjoy a nice\, socializing walk in the outdoors. There is a limit to the number of dogs that can come from BRHS\, so if you’re interested in walking a dog\, please contact Cameron Davis\, Volunteer Manager for BRHS by Monday\, April 1st to arrange a time for training orientation\, pairing with the appropriate dog\, and to sign a volunteer waiver. Cameron can be reached at\, volunteer@blueridgehumane.org. Participants may also bring their own dog on the hike so long as they are kept on leash and do not have any nose-to-nose meetings with the BRHS dogs. If bringing your own dog\, there is no need to go through orientation at BRHS. \nThe approximately 2-mile easy/moderate\, loop hike begins by ascending Bearwallow Mountain\, gaining just over 500’ in elevation in approximately 1 mile. The trail traverses through a maturing hardwood forest before opening up to a grassy meadow near the mountain’s summit at 4\,232 feet above sea level. Here\, hikers will enjoy a nearly 280° panoramic view of the surrounding mountains with views that include Mt. Mitchell and Mt. Pisgah. This breathtaking vista also includes a birds-eye view of Hickory Nut Gorge\, downtown Hendersonville\, and the high country of South Carolina. A historic fire lookout tower occupies the summit\, as do grazing cattle who call the mountaintop home. \nAfter taking in the sights and enjoying a little break and snack near the summit of the mountain\, hikers and their dogs will complete the loop by returning to the trailhead by traveling a gravel service road on the property. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. Hikers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and dogs must be on a leash and accustomed to being around many other dogs. DESCRIPTION:Where: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve \nMeet: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve\, Oak Grove Rd\, Landrum\, SC 29356 (see map link below) \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nWhat to expect: 5.5–miles\, moderately strenuous; trail type-lollipop; elevation change 928′ \n  \nHikers\, and their dogs\, are invited to join Conserving Carolina and the Foothills Humane Society (FHS) on Saturday\, April 13 for a 5.5-mile hike at Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve in South Carolina. \nThis is a great opportunity to give a shelter dog a break from the shelter and allow them to enjoy a nice\, socializing walk in the woods. There is a limit to the number of dogs that can come from the shelter\, so if you’re interested in walking a dog\, please contact Dee Anderson\, Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator for FHS by Wednesday\, April 3rd to arrange a time for training orientation\, pairing with the appropriate dog\, and to sign a volunteer waiver. Dee can be reached at\, volunteer@foothillshumanesociety.org. Participants may also bring their own dog on the hike so long as they are kept on leash and do not have any nose-to-nose meetings with the shelter dogs. \nThe 5.5-mile hike is 2.75-miles out and 2.75-miles back and it starts out as relatively easy\, winding through new growth forest and along several streams\, gradually becoming moderately strenuous as the trail ascends Squirrel Mountain through a rich hardwood forest with beautiful rock outcroppings. After reaching the ridge top\, the trail descends Squirrel Mountain through a lush cove forest to the South Pacolet River\, at the base of Chestnut Ridge. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. To register\, please RSVP below. \n  \nHikers will meet at the Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve parking area/trailhead at 10:00 a.m. to check in. DESCRIPTION:Date: April 13\, 2024 \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nDistance and Difficulty: 2-miles\, out and back; easy \nLocation: Pleasant Grove \nJoin us for a Members Only walk through Conserving Carolina’s Pleasant Grove Preserve! \nThis walk will be guided by Conserving Carolina’s Natural Resources Manager\, David Lee\, who has spearheaded all of Conserving Carolina’s French Broad River restoration projects. \nThe guided walk will take participants through the 70-acre floodplain restoration project\, showcasing restored features including Little Willow Creek\, the French Broad River\, a backwater slough\, and floodplain wetland habitats. In addition to witnessing these restored natural features\, we’ll also discuss the successful collaboration with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). As a key part of our project\, we planted native species that hold significant value for EBCI artists\, aiming to support and sustain their traditional crafts. This walk offers a unique opportunity to see the profound impacts of our conservation efforts\, blending ecological restoration and cultural preservation. \nThis is an easy walk on flat terrain\, in a restored flood plain that was completed in 2023. Participants should be prepared to cross a stream on steppingstones that may be slippery. Children accompanied by adults are welcome. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy (and waterproof\, if you have them) footwear. DESCRIPTION:Date: April 11\, 2024 \nTime: 11:00 am \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat Center \nConserving Carolina volunteers are invited to join us to explore Laughing Waters Retreat Center and the Hickory Nut Forest Eco-community located in Gerton\, NC. \nHickory Nut Forest (HNF)\, an intentionally planned community\, was founded by the late John Myers and his wife Jane Lawson in 2006.  HNF has 20 homesites on 25 acres with an additional 35-acre conservation-easement common area\, which is protected through Conserving Carolina. Community members also have access to 60 acres of adjacent property which includes Laughing Waters Retreat Center and an organic orchard and gardens. Currently\, the community has 9 completed homes with several more in the planning stages. The pillars of the community are Earth Stewardship\, Green Built Homes\, Renewable Energy\, Healthy Food\, and Education. \nStarting at Laughing Waters Retreat Center\, we will learn about the history and intentions of the site and the activities that the Center offers. Then\, we will tour the micro – hydro system which powers all the buildings of Laughing Waters from Hickory Nut Creek. \nAfter the tour of Laughing Waters\, we will carpool to Hickory Nut Forest\, less than half a mile up 74A\, to see and learn more about the green community. \nParticipants are invited to enjoy a hike at the nearby Florence Nature Preserve or Wildcat Rock trails after the tour of the Eco-community. \nBe prepared for walking on uneven surfaces and be sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2023 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area\, first/lower parking lot \nJoin us to celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – with a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nStarting from the lower/first parking lot\, the stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. In the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are invited to bring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the lower/first parking lot. Bring a flashlight for use when necessary. The event will be cancelled in case of heavy rain\, snow\, or ice. \nPre-registration is required\, please RSVP below.  There is no charge for this event. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the website event will be updated by 12 p.m. the day of the walk if cancellation is necessary. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. SUMMARY:Guided Bird Walk along the Green River!
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 22\, 2023 \nTime: 8:00 a.m. \nLocation: Swiftwater Farm \nGuide: Clifton Avery of Ventures Birding Tours \n  \nJoin us for an easy 2-hour guided bird walk in search of residents and Neotropical migrants that visited the region to raise their young. We will be exploring open grassy fields\, brush\, and edges along the Green River where we will have the opportunity to see and hear a large diversity of species. Highlights along the river should include Louisiana Waterthrush and Yellow-throated Warbler. \n  \nClifton was born and raised in the foothills of western North Carolina. He has always had a passion for nature and the outdoors but did not discover his love for birds until he saw a Painted Bunting off the coast of North Carolina on an early summer morning. Soon after this eye-opening experience\, Clifton had the opportunity to participate in a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) course in Brazil where he was overwhelmed by the beauty and diversity of the birds of the Amazon Rainforest. Following this experience\, Clifton went to Appalachian State University where he majored in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a focus in Ornithology. \nClifton worked for various ornithological research projects after college where he banded and nest searched for a wide range of avian species in Peru\, Colombia\, and Nicaragua. He also worked a couple seasons for the NC Audubon Society studying the Golden-winged Warbler on its breeding grounds in northwestern NC. For the past 5 years Clifton has worked for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission as the Mountain Wildlife Diversity Technician. His duties include conducting surveying\, monitoring\, habitat management\, and public outreach for wildlife conservation projects focusing on species of greatest conservation need that occur in western North Carolina. He mostly focuses on birds\, flying squirrels\, and Hellbender salamanders. He currently lives in Asheville\, NC and is the father of a 4-year old boy. He does not have any inside pets but the bears and turkeys that pass through his yard regularly suffice. \n  \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should bring binoculars and wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by e-mail\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, by 7 a.m. on the day of the walk and/or check the Conserving Carolina website or Facebook page to see if the walk will take place. \nSpace is limited. DESCRIPTION:In support of the NC Bird Atlas citizen-science project and the Big Atlas Weekend\, Conserving Carolina’s\, Pam Torlina will be leading a bird walk in an un-adopted priority block in southeastern Henderson County. \nThe Big Atlas Weekend\, June 23-25\, is an opportunity for birders in multiple states and provinces that are running bird atlases to engage in some friendly atlasing competitions. Last year’s overall winner was Maine – with some additional effort we’re hopeful that NC can come in first this year! \nThis is a fun way for birders from across the state to document breeding birds and come together as a birding community. For many birds in our area\, breeding peaks in late June. Riverfest is Saturday June 17\, 2023\nWhen: June 17\, 2023 \nWhere: Champion Park in Rosman \nTime: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm \n  \nThe Transylvania French Broad Stewards\, the Town of Rosman\, Conserving Carolina\, Headwaters Outfitters\, and the Transylvania County Tourism Development Authority are joining up again to put on the eighth annual Upper French Broad Riverfest and invite residents and visitors to come spend a fun day celebrating the river! Join us at Champion Park in Rosman\, NC for free\, family-friendly festival with live local music\, hands-on educational activities from many local businesses\, interactive displays about the French Broad River\, and a scavenger hunt with prizes for kids and adults\, free tubing for everyone\, food trucks (Feta Flav\, Jenny’s Minis Donut Bus\, and Baabals Ice Cream and Family Grill)\, and more (and don’t forget your swimsuit!)! SUMMARY:Adopt-a-Greenway Litter Clean-up
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community greenway cleanup on the beautiful Oklawaha Greenway!\nCome help us clean up the Oklawaha Greenway! We will clean up litter along Conserving Carolina’s two-mile Adopt-a-Greenway section from 10AM – 12PM. \nThe Oklawaha Greenway provides a green recreational space for the City of Hendersonville and we want to make sure it stays clean of litter! \nVolunteers must be able to walk moderate distances (~3-miles) and may need to bend over to pick up trash.
