This walk will be led by Mike Resch\, an experienced\, professional\, and expert birder. Mike will lead participants on an easy walk through the preserve\, where we’ll be looking and listening for sparrows\, blackbirds\, and other late wintering species. Mike will also share tips about how to identify these birds in the field. \nMike has been a birder since getting his first pair of binoculars at 8 years of age. Since then\, he’s birded throughout the US and Canada\, birding extensively in all 50 states and 10 provinces.  Mike’s state birding passion is chronicled in his blog – www.statebirding.blogspot.com. He formerly lived in New England where he was the Chair of the New Hampshire Rare Birds Committee. His technical specialty as an environmental engineer is in cleaning up hazardous waste sites. Since retiring to Hendersonville\, NC\, Mike has enjoyed birding the many excellent birding spots in the NC mountains and the upstate of SC. He is a co-coordinator for the western NC region of the North Carolina Bird Atlas and a guide for Ventures Birding Tours. Litter will always be a problem if we do not tackle it at the source. \nTo be part of the solution:\n1. REFUSE to use plastic single-use items\, such as plastic grocery bags\, plastic tableware and plastic cups\n2. REDUCE the amount of plastic and other waste you use by Bringing Your Own: water bottle\, coffee mug\, bag\, etc\n3. RECYCLE (correctly) as much as possible\n4. BUY products with little or no plastic packaging\, and products made from recycled materials\n5. DISPOSE of your waste properly\, and secure your loads\n6. KEEP storm drains clean\n7. SPREAD the word! Tell friends how to properly dispose of waste\, and encourage them to Bring Their Own\n8. PARTICIPATE in an cleanup event \nWorkday Description:\nBe part of the solution and participate in a cleanup! For this workday\, we will be completing a roadside cleanup along one of Polk County’s heavily trashed areas\, Shuford Road. SUMMARY:Guided Mushroom/Ecology Walk at Swiftwater Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Olga Katić\, owner of Mushroom Mountain!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 30th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. This program was accepted by Health Departments of 7 states\, and counting\, and also endorsed by the FDA. In her free time\, Olga loves to be in the woods\, picking mushrooms and wild plants\, and of course taking tons of pictures of anything she finds. She is fascinated by nature in every possible aspect. \n  \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. DESCRIPTION:Brackenfest 3.0 is a fundraising event to expand Bracken Preserve – Brevard’s own trail system which directly links to the Pisgah National Forest. With a current 432 acres and nine miles of trail – we are on our way to adding the next 3-4 miles (with 1-2 miles planned for completion within 2025) of beginner and intermediate trails and need your help!  \nBrackenfest is a Time Trial event – the winners achieving the most laps in a three hour timeline – and the bragging rights that the winners deserve. This year the event is open to Trail Runners as well!  \nThanks to generous donations – 100% of the proceeds from the event go to the new Bracken Trails  \nPrizes for the winners in all categories – Adult Men and Women\, Student Men and Women\, and Youth. Award Ceremony will be at 1:00PM  \nLunch for participants and volunteers is included in registration and location will be announced within this week. If you would like your friends or family to join you – there is a $15.00 additional cost. (Lunch and non-alcoholic beverages included). DESCRIPTION:Where: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve \nMeet: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve\, Oak Grove Rd\, Landrum\, SC 29356 (see map link below) \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nWhat to expect: 5.5–miles\, moderately strenuous; trail type-lollipop; elevation change 928′ \n  \nHikers\, and their dogs\, are invited to join Conserving Carolina and the Foothills Humane Society (FHS) on Saturday\, October 25 for a 5.5-mile hike at Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve in South Carolina. \nThis is a great opportunity to give a shelter dog a break from the shelter and allow them to enjoy a nice\, socializing walk in the woods. There is a limit to the number of dogs that can come from the shelter\, so if you’re interested in walking a dog\, please contact the Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator for FHS no later than Wednesday\, October 15th to arrange a time for training orientation\, pairing with the appropriate dog\, and to sign a volunteer waiver. E-mail communityoutreach@foothillshumanesociety.org . Participants may also bring their own dog on the hike so long as they are kept on leash and do not have any nose-to-nose meetings with the shelter dogs. \nThe 5.5-mile hike is 2.75-miles out and 2.75-miles back and it starts out as relatively easy\, winding through new growth forest and along several streams\, gradually becoming moderately strenuous as the trail ascends Squirrel Mountain through a rich hardwood forest with beautiful rock outcroppings. After reaching the ridge top\, the trail descends Squirrel Mountain through a lush cove forest to the South Pacolet River\, at the base of Chestnut Ridge. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. To register\, please RSVP below. \n  \nHikers will meet at the Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve parking area/trailhead at 10:00 a.m. to check in. We would like FHS to have a parking spot in the lot\, if possible\, for ease and safety getting the dogs out and to their walkers.  (There is overflow parking along Oak Grove Road.)  Hikers should be prepared to return to the area in the late afternoon. Before each hike\, you will be asked to sign a waiver form. For your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water (don’t forget snacks for your pooch!). \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by email at: pam@conservingcarolina by 7:00 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina website ‘calendar’ to see if the hike will take place. Join us to celebrate autumn and Halloween! What better way to celebrate YOU\, our volunteers\, All Hallows’ Eve\, and the change of the seasons and glory of autumn leaf color! \nJoin us at Swiftwater Farm for a scenic 5 mile trail featuring stunning mountain vistas overlooking the Lake Adger Dam. Then descend into the ravine where you will walk along Hitching Creek observing lovely ground cedar\, rhododendron\, and large rock outcroppings. Cross over into another ravine along natural springs and creeks where you witness remnants of past gold mining history. Following the creek leads you to a 1 mile stretch along the Green River where you will see signs of the grain milling history. From the Green River\, we will cross over the mountain along more creeks and springs to complete our loop trail. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. SUMMARY:A Nighttime Walk to Celebrate the Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2025 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area\, first/lower parking lot \nJoin us to celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – with a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nStarting from the lower/first parking lot\, participants will be asked to enjoy a silent walk in the darkness\, without the aid of flashlights. (Red flashlights are permitted\, but only if needed/when necessary.) The stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. Once arriving at the falls\, in the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining (white light) flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are asked to: \n\nbring (white light) flashlights to help illuminate the waterfall when we arrive\nonly us red flashlights along the trail and as needed – we’d like to invite you to use your senses and realize how well you can see and enjoy the wilderness in the dark!\nwalk in silence to the waterfall\nbring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the lower/first parking lot\n\nThe event will be cancelled in case of heavy rain\, snow\, or ice. Pre-registration is required\, please RSVP below.  There is no charge for this event. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the website event will be updated by 12 p.m. on the day of the walk if cancellation is necessary. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. Bring a snack and water for yourself. \nPlease also remember to bring any medication that you may need in the event of an emergency (ie: epinephrine\, nitroglycerine\, insulin\, etc.). Walk leaders will carry a first aid kit; however\, it may not contain specific medication for your individual needs. \nBefore each walk\, you will be asked to sign a waiver form. For your safety\, do not attempt any walk beyond your ability and experience. DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, April 18\, 2026 \nTime: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm \nWhere: South Main Street in Hendersonville between Allen Street and Caswell Street \n\nCelebrate Earth Day at Hendo Earth Fest\n  \nThe City of Hendersonville Environmental Sustainability Board is hosting the 4th annual Hendo Earth Fest in downtown Hendersonville from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm! Local organizations and environmental champions will educate\, entertain\, and raise awareness of the need to protect our planet for future generations.  This is a free\, family-friendly educational event! \nThe festival is sponsored by the Hendersonville Environmental Sustainability Board (ESB) in association with Caregivers of Mother Earth\, Conserving Carolina\, and the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club. \nThis is a free\, family-friendly educational event to promote community education for all ages about environmental and sustainable practices\, to inspire action\, and to renew and expand commitments to protect our planet. Local and regional environmental organizations will provide participation/hands-on activities and demonstrations designed to educate\, renew and expand action to protect our Western North Carolina environment and natural resources.
