DESCRIPTION:Date: June 19\, 2024 \nTime: 11:00 am \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat Center \nConserving Carolina volunteers are invited to join us to explore Laughing Waters Retreat Center and the Hickory Nut Forest Eco-community located in Gerton\, NC. \nHickory Nut Forest (HNF)\, an intentionally planned community\, was founded by the late John Myers and his wife Jane Lawson in 2006.  HNF has 20 homesites on 25 acres with an additional 35-acre conservation-easement common area\, which is protected through Conserving Carolina. Community members also have access to 60 acres of adjacent property which includes Laughing Waters Retreat Center and an organic orchard and gardens. Currently\, the community has 9 completed homes with several more in the planning stages. The pillars of the community are Earth Stewardship\, Green Built Homes\, Renewable Energy\, Healthy Food\, and Education. \nStarting at Laughing Waters Retreat Center\, we will learn about the history and intentions of the site and the activities that the Center offers. Then\, we will tour the micro – hydro system which powers all the buildings of Laughing Waters from Hickory Nut Creek. \nAfter the tour of Laughing Waters\, we will carpool to Hickory Nut Forest\, less than half a mile up 74A\, to see and learn more about the green community. \nParticipants are invited to enjoy a hike at the nearby Florence Nature Preserve or Wildcat Rock trails after the tour of the Eco-community. \nBe prepared for walking on uneven surfaces and be sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring a snack bag and/or lunch and plenty of water for yourself. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required\, and space is limited to 20 participants. SUMMARY:Guided Nature Walk – Looking for Mushrooms with Todd Elliott!
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Todd Elliott!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 24th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nTodd Elliott’s studies in biodiversity and interrelationships in nature have taken him to remote corners of the world to explore tropical rainforests\, deserts\, temperate forests\, beaches\, and high mountains on six continents. He is particularly interested in edible and medicinal mushrooms and plants and their importance to humans. Todd is an author of the Timber Press field guide Mushrooms of the Southeast and has published academic literature on various aspects of fungal ecology and taxonomy. Todd received his undergraduate degree in interpretive natural history from Warren Wilson College (USA) and his PhD in ecology from the University of New England (Australia). He enjoys sharing his research and knowledge of the natural world through presentations\, workshops\, and consultations for many different organizations in the US and abroad. SUMMARY:A Nighttime Walk to Celebrate the Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Date: December 21\, 2024 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. \nLocation: DuPont State Recreational Forest\, Hooker Falls Access Area\, first/lower parking lot \nJoin us to celebrate the winter solstice – the longest night of the year – with a nighttime walk to Hooker Falls\, in DuPont State Recreational Forest. \nStarting from the lower/first parking lot\, participants will be asked to enjoy a silent walk in the darkness\, without the aid of flashlights. (Red flashlights are permitted\, but only if needed/when necessary.) The stroll will be along a one-fourth mile trail to the base of Hooker Falls. Once arriving at the falls\, in the dark of night we’ll create soft moonlight by shining (white light) flashlights upon the falls…creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants are asked to: \n\nbring (white light) flashlights to help illuminate the waterfall when we arrive\nonly us red flashlights along the trail and as needed – we’d like to invite you to use your senses and realize how well you can see and enjoy the wilderness in the dark!\nwalk in silence to the waterfall\nbring a thermos with a warm (non-alcoholic) drink to toast the sun’s return when we arrive back at the lower/first parking lot\n\nThe event will be cancelled in case of heavy rain\, snow\, or ice. Pre-registration is required\, please RSVP below.  There is no charge for this event. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the website event will be updated by 12 p.m. on the day of the walk if cancellation is necessary. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. SUMMARY:Everett Rd. Transylvania County Clean-up with MountainTrue & Conserving Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Come join the French Broad Riverkeeper team and Conserving Carolina as we clean up the trash left behind by Hurricane Helene in Transylvania County. We will be removing trash and debris along the riparian areas upstream and downstream. Please note this will be a land-based clean up. \nPlease wear long sleeves\, long pants\, work boots\, rubber boots and/or waders. (Expect to get dirty!) We will have protective equipment available (gloves\, glasses)\, but feel free to bring your own as well. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring tools (loppers\, saws\, shovels\, ladders\, etc.) to help dislodge and collect garbage. \nPlease bring water and snacks and any food or drinks that you need. \nVolunteer Safety Reminder: Always Wear Your PPE During Cleanups!\nAs more volunteers participate in river clean-ups and other recovery activities\, many will be coming into contact with mud\, sludge\, sediment\, and dust left behind by the storm. These materials may contain higher levels of pollutants and contaminants\, so it’s important to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself. \nTo work safely\, we recommend using the following personal protective equipment (PPE): \n     ✔️Rubber boots that can be easily cleaned to prevent cross-contamination. \n     ✔️Rubber gloves to protect your hands from direct contact with contaminated materials. \n     ✔️N95 masks (or better) to reduce inhalation of harmful dust and particles. \n     ✔️Long sleeves to protect your arms from direct contact with potentially harmful substances. \n     ✔️Waterproof bandages to cover any cuts or abrasions\, reducing the risk of infection. \n     ✔️Safety glasses or goggles to shield your eyes from mud particles and dust. \nAfter your clean-up activities\, be sure to shower as soon as possible to remove any remaining contaminants from your skin and clothing. Given the lack of running water in many areas\, you may want to arrange your shower plans before signing up for a clean-up. It’s also a good idea to make sure you are up to date on your tetanus shot.  \nBy following these guidelines\, you can help ensure your safety while helping our community recover. \n  \nPre-registration is required. Mike will lead participants on an easy walk through the preserve\, where we’ll be looking and listening for sparrows\, blackbirds\, and other late wintering species. Mike will also share tips about how to identify these birds in the field. \nMike has been a birder since getting his first pair of binoculars at 8 years of age. Since then\, he’s birded throughout the US and Canada\, birding extensively in all 50 states and 10 provinces.  Mike’s state birding passion is chronicled in his blog – www.statebirding.blogspot.com. He formerly lived in New England where he was the Chair of the New Hampshire Rare Birds Committee. His technical specialty as an environmental engineer is in cleaning up hazardous waste sites. Since retiring to Hendersonville\, NC\, Mike has enjoyed birding the many excellent birding spots in the NC mountains and the upstate of SC. He is a co-coordinator for the western NC region of the North Carolina Bird Atlas and a guide for Ventures Birding Tours. Litter will always be a problem if we do not tackle it at the source. \nTo be part of the solution:\n1. REFUSE to use plastic single-use items\, such as plastic grocery bags\, plastic tableware and plastic cups\n2. REDUCE the amount of plastic and other waste you use by Bringing Your Own: water bottle\, coffee mug\, bag\, etc\n3. RECYCLE (correctly) as much as possible\n4. BUY products with little or no plastic packaging\, and products made from recycled materials\n5. DISPOSE of your waste properly\, and secure your loads\n6. KEEP storm drains clean\n7. SPREAD the word! Tell friends how to properly dispose of waste\, and encourage them to Bring Their Own\n8. SUMMARY:Guided Mushroom/Ecology Walk at Swiftwater Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Olga Katić\, owner of Mushroom Mountain!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 30th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. This program was accepted by Health Departments of 7 states\, and counting\, and also endorsed by the FDA. In her free time\, Olga loves to be in the woods\, picking mushrooms and wild plants\, and of course taking tons of pictures of anything she finds. She is fascinated by nature in every possible aspect. \n  \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. DESCRIPTION:Brackenfest 3.0 is a fundraising event to expand Bracken Preserve – Brevard’s own trail system which directly links to the Pisgah National Forest. With a current 432 acres and nine miles of trail – we are on our way to adding the next 3-4 miles (with 1-2 miles planned for completion within 2025) of beginner and intermediate trails and need your help!  \nBrackenfest is a Time Trial event – the winners achieving the most laps in a three hour timeline – and the bragging rights that the winners deserve. This year the event is open to Trail Runners as well!  \nThanks to generous donations – 100% of the proceeds from the event go to the new Bracken Trails  \nPrizes for the winners in all categories – Adult Men and Women\, Student Men and Women\, and Youth. Award Ceremony will be at 1:00PM  \nLunch for participants and volunteers is included in registration and location will be announced within this week. If you would like your friends or family to join you – there is a $15.00 additional cost. (Lunch and non-alcoholic beverages included). DESCRIPTION:Where: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve \nMeet: Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve\, Oak Grove Rd\, Landrum\, SC 29356 (see map link below) \nTime: 10:00 a.m. \nWhat to expect: 5.5–miles\, moderately strenuous; trail type-lollipop; elevation change 928′ \n  \nHikers\, and their dogs\, are invited to join Conserving Carolina and the Foothills Humane Society (FHS) on Saturday\, October 25 for a 5.5-mile hike at Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve in South Carolina. \nThis is a great opportunity to give a shelter dog a break from the shelter and allow them to enjoy a nice\, socializing walk in the woods. There is a limit to the number of dogs that can come from the shelter\, so if you’re interested in walking a dog\, please contact the Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator for FHS no later than Wednesday\, October 15th to arrange a time for training orientation\, pairing with the appropriate dog\, and to sign a volunteer waiver. E-mail communityoutreach@foothillshumanesociety.org . Participants may also bring their own dog on the hike so long as they are kept on leash and do not have any nose-to-nose meetings with the shelter dogs. \nThe 5.5-mile hike is 2.75-miles out and 2.75-miles back and it starts out as relatively easy\, winding through new growth forest and along several streams\, gradually becoming moderately strenuous as the trail ascends Squirrel Mountain through a rich hardwood forest with beautiful rock outcroppings. After reaching the ridge top\, the trail descends Squirrel Mountain through a lush cove forest to the South Pacolet River\, at the base of Chestnut Ridge. \nPre-registration is mandatory\, and space is limited to 20 participants. To register\, please RSVP below. \n  \nHikers will meet at the Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve parking area/trailhead at 10:00 a.m. to check in. We would like FHS to have a parking spot in the lot\, if possible\, for ease and safety getting the dogs out and to their walkers.  (There is overflow parking along Oak Grove Road.)  Hikers should be prepared to return to the area in the late afternoon. Before each hike\, you will be asked to sign a waiver form. For your safety\, do not attempt any hike beyond your ability and experience. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. SUMMARY:Volunteer Only Hike at Swiftwater Farm
DESCRIPTION:Where: Swiftwater Farm\, private property \nMeet: Katydid Lane\, Mill Spring\, NC\, at 8:45 a.m. \nDistance and difficulty: 5 miles\, moderate\, loop \nThis hike will take place on private property next to the Green River in Mill Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam. Join us to celebrate autumn and Halloween! What better way to celebrate YOU\, our volunteers\, All Hallows’ Eve\, and the change of the seasons and glory of autumn leaf color! \nJoin us at Swiftwater Farm for a scenic 5 mile trail featuring stunning mountain vistas overlooking the Lake Adger Dam. Then descend into the ravine where you will walk along Hitching Creek observing lovely ground cedar\, rhododendron\, and large rock outcroppings. Cross over into another ravine along natural springs and creeks where you witness remnants of past gold mining history. Following the creek leads you to a 1 mile stretch along the Green River where you will see signs of the grain milling history. From the Green River\, we will cross over the mountain along more creeks and springs to complete our loop trail. \nBe sure to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear.
