In this presentation\, we’ll explore the fascinating group of birds known as aerial insectivores and the remarkable adaptations that make them masters of flight. Featuring species found across Western North Carolina including the Chimney Swifts\, Barn Swallows\, and Common Nighthawks\, we’ll take a closer look at how wing shape\, feeding strategies\, and behavior help these birds hunt in midair. Along the way\, discover how insect loss and changing landscapes are shaping the future of these remarkable birds and what we can do locally to help keep our skies full of life. \nSarah grew up in Brevard\, NC\, and spent much of her childhood exploring the natural spaces surrounding her home. This time spent observing and falling in love with her local ecosystem contributed to her drive to pursue a career in conservation. She is beyond thrilled to start her career here in Western NC as Community Engagement and Education Associate with AmeriCorps Project Conserve at Conserving Carolina. \nSarah graduated from UNC Wilmington in May 2025 with master’s degrees in public administration and environmental science\, building upon her knowledge of environmental management and policy from her undergraduate studies at UNC Asheville. She looks forward to using her skills in these fields to advance Conserving Carolina’s mission. This presentation introduces the often-overlooked role fungi play in our forest\, from forming vital underground partnerships with trees to breaking down organic matter and cycling nutrients through the ecosystem. \nE.J. will discuss mushroom ecology and biology\, common and notable species of Western North Carolina\, and how fungi intersect with human history\, cuisine\, and culture. SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: The Fall Raptor Migration in our South Carolina Mountains

Photo by leppyone is licensed under CC BY 2.0. \nDate: August 18\, 2026 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeaker: Ed Moorer\, Hawk Watch \nWe will take a look at  what  why\,  and how migrating raptors fly south during the autumn months.  Sassafras Mountain in Pickens County is one of the observational sites used to send data to Hawk Migration Association on a daily basis for the three month season  that begins just after Labor Day. Thousands of hawks could possibly be seen in one day at our state’s highest point. \nEd Moorer began the Sassafras Mountain Hawk Watch in 2015 and is currently the site coordinator. He began his career as a school teacher for 30 years and then worked at Table Rock State Park enjoying teaching for the Discover Carolina program and in the nature center.  He has volunteered with S.C. Dept. of Natural Resources as a Hunter Education Instructor and now participates  in the Conservation Education division. Ed has been counting raptors for 25 years learning from experts at Caesars Head overlook and then moving over to Sassafras Mountain.  One of his goals now is to recruit younger observers to learn and carry-on this endeavor. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

SUMMARY:Guided Mushroom/Ecology Walk at Swiftwater Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina for an interpretive nature walk to look for mushrooms with Olga Katić\, owner of Mushroom Mountain!\n  \nThe event will take place along the Green River in Mills Spring\, NC\, below the Lake Adger dam on Saturday\, August 22nd from 9:00-11:00 a.m. In order to make this an enjoyable and educational experience for participants\, space is limited to 20 and pre-registration is required. \nOlga grew up mushroom hunting with her relatives in Bosnia and Hercegovina. When her parents were at work\, her grandma watched her and her sister\, and they had the freedom of being in the woods all day long. At one moment they would be digging up leeches out of the fresh water well and feeding them to chickens\, and the next moment\, they would get chased by grandma’s rooster. But they also spent a lot of time picking boletes\, milk mushrooms\, and other varieties of mushrooms. They’d bring them to their grandpa and he would get rid of the ones he thought were not edible\, the rest they would cook on the wood stove and eat! Moving to the present\, Olga is the proud owner of Mushroom Mountain and she has an amazing team working with her. They produce mushroom spawn for many different edible and medicinal varieties. They also make several different medicinal mushroom extracts and medicinal mushroom honeys under the name Mycomatrix. Mushroom Mountain also runs a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification Program. This program was accepted by Health Departments of 7 states\, and counting\, and also endorsed by the FDA. In her free time\, Olga loves to be in the woods\, picking mushrooms and wild plants\, and of course taking tons of pictures of anything she finds. She is fascinated by nature in every possible aspect. \n  \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. A loop/hand lens may be helpful\, if you have one to bring! \nIn case of inclement weather\, please contact Pam Torlina by e-mail\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, by 8 a.m. on the day of the walk and/or check the Conserving Carolina website calendar event to see if the walk will take place. \nSpace is limited. SUMMARY:Etowah Library Speaker Series: Enjoying Butterflies in Your Backyard
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 2\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Etowah Library \nSpeaker: David Ahrenholz \nButterfly populations across the United States have declined at least 22% since 2000. This presentation is an introduction to the butterflies occurring in the fields\, forests and lawns of Western North Carolina and it includes ways to us backyard plants to attract and support them. \nDr. Ahrenholz began his interest in butterflies as a child in Iowa. He taught himself photography because family and friends were not interested in dead insect specimens. After medical school he continued his passion for nature photography\, photographing butterflies across the US and tropical South America. His photographs captured new species and led to an appointment as a Research Associate in the Entomology Department at the Smithsonian. He has pursued a 25-year project with the museum to document the butterflies of Ecuador in photographs and by collecting specimens. SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: The Ecology of Exposure - Rock Outcrop Plant Communities in the NC Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 8\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Gary Kauffman\, botanist and ecologist \nWe often admire rock outcrops from a scenic overlook or scramble across them on a favorite hike — but these dramatic landscapes are far more than just stone. Perched on ridges and cliffs throughout the western North Carolina mountains\, rock outcrops host unique plant communities shaped by elevation\, chemistry\, exposure\, and structure. \nIn this program\, we’ll explore where different outcrop types occur and how factors like pH\, slope\, and geology create distinct ecological worlds. You’ll learn how to tell them apart using a simple flow-chart key and discover the specialized plant species that cling\, bloom\, and thrive in these extreme environments. \nWhether you’re a hiker\, naturalist\, or plant enthusiast\, you’ll leave with a new way to “read” the rocks beneath your feet. \nGary Kauffman is trained as a botanist and ecologist\, with a master’s degree in botany and mycology. In 2025\, he retired from the National Forests in NC after 32 years of work. Gary’s job covered 1.4 million USFS acres from the mountains to the coast. He is currently on the board of the Asheville Botanical Garden and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. With some of the highest diversity of plants and wildlife anywhere in the world\, our region and its natural history is truly a story that will inform and inspire. Mr. Huffman will present a lifetime of study and discovery of the region and present how we came to be. \nRick Huffman\, American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)\, is the founder of Earth Design\, an environmental design and landscape architecture firm with more than 30 years of experience integrating ecology\, horticulture\, and landscape architecture to create resilient\, inspiring places. A nationally recognized conservation leader\, Rick founded the South Carolina Native Plant Society and continues to serve as its Advocacy Chair and Upstate Chapter President. He is the co-author of Life at the Water’s Edge\, recipient of numerous conservation and environmental education awards\, including the Governor’s Award for Environmental Awareness and the 2024 Lifetime Achievement for Conservation Award from Conservation Voters of South Carolina. In 2025\, he was elevated to Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects\, the profession’s highest national honor. Throughout his career\, Rick has been a passionate advocate for protecting native plants\, restoring natural landscapes\, and connecting people to the rich natural heritage of the Southern Appalachians. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Fighting for Farmland - Henderson County Farmland Preservation
DESCRIPTION:Henderson County Farmland Preservation has kickstarted a new agricultural conservation easement program to work in tandem with existing preservation efforts. The current efforts\, through outreach\, Voluntary Ag Districts and Enhanced Agricultural Districts\, are working to ensure that the farmland in Henderson County remains productive and in the hands of farmers. The County lost over 8\,000 acres of agricultural land between 2017-2022\, and the preservation efforts through Soil and Water are aiming at preventing the continuous bleed seen throughout North Carolina. The state of North Carolina ranks second in loss of farmland\, and first in loss of farmland to development. Henderson County’s efforts to reduce the loss of farmland are in partnership and funded through the North Carolina Department of Agriculture’s Farmland Preservation Trust Fund. \nAngela was born and raised in Columbus\, North Carolina\, and became interested in environmental conservation and agriculture in high school through the agriculture program and FFA chapter at Polk County High. She attended Appalachian State for environmental science and received her master’s in environmental and soil sciences at the University of Tennessee\, where she focused on the reduction of food insecurity in Appalachia through small-scale agricultural production and farmland preservation. Using real-world examples\, such as the Pleasant Grove and Kings Bridge restorations\, we’ll explore strategies to restore natural functions to floodplains and build resilience against extreme weather events like Tropical Storm Helene. Attendees will gain insights into effective restoration techniques\, the power of community partnerships\, and the importance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge. Join us to learn how these projects serve as a model for creating thriving\, sustainable landscapes that support both people and nature. \nOriginally from Greensboro\, Wood graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2013 with a BS in environmental science. Though his original plans pointed toward a career in glacial hydroclimatology\, he took the scenic route – spending the next decade on tour with his band\, watching the world pass by through van windows\, bright lights\, and thick smoke. When the music settled down he found his way back to the natural sciences through land protection work at a land trust in Utah. For some\, farmland preservation is about conserving farmland and natural resources. For others\, it is about preserving community. In this presentation\, author Andrew Waters describes the transdisciplinary approach to farmland preservation profiled in his new book\, American Farmland Preservation: Practices\, Policies\, and the Politics of Place. \nAuthor Andrew Waters is a native of Hendersonville and has worked in land conservation for almost twenty-five years. He has a Ph.D. in natural resource policy from Clemson University and writes frequently about conservation and southern history.
