DESCRIPTION:Date: October 7\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Etowah Library \nSpeaker: Pam Torlina\, Community Engagement Director for Conserving Carolina \nThis presentation explores the remarkable world of bioluminescence in the mountains and forests of western North Carolina\, where fireflies\, glowworms\, and fungi illuminate the night through natural chemical light production. Blending science\, ecology\, and storytelling\, it examines how bioluminescence works\, why the Southern Appalachian region supports such extraordinary biodiversity\, and how healthy forests\, clean water\, and true darkness are essential to these species’ survival. From the synchronized flashes of fireflies to the eerie glow of foxfire and glowworms hidden in Appalachian ravines\, the program highlights both the wonder and fragility of these nighttime ecosystems while emphasizing the importance of conservation in protecting not only biodiversity\, but also opportunities for awe and human connection with the natural world. \nPam Torlina is a biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator with more than 30 years of experience connecting people to the natural world. She has been with Conserving Carolina for 20 years\, where she shares her passion for the rich biodiversity of western North Carolina through educational programs focused on native plants\, wildlife\, ecology\, and conservation. \nThroughout her career\, Pam has worked with organizations including the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks\, Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve in Ontario\, Canada. Her background includes field biology\, environmental education\, wildlife surveys\, and habitat conservation\, with a special love for the forests\, streams\, mountains\, and native species of the Southern Appalachians.
