DESCRIPTION:Date: May 12\, 2026 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Steve Pettis\, Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent with the Henderson County Cooperative Extension \n\nJoin us for a presentation on Environmentally Friendly Landscaping from Henderson County Extension Agent and host of the Gardening in the Mountains Radio Show and Podcast\, Steve Pettis. Steve will discuss environmentally friendly garden techniques that you can implement this spring to make your garden a friendly place for wildlife including pollinating insects. Steve believes at least part of our landscapes should mimic nature as much as possible. Healthy urban and suburban environments can be achieved by reducing lawns\, holistic tree health care and protection\, using biorational pest control methods and increasing biodiversity utilizing native plants in naturalistically designed plantings. \nSteve has been in the plant business for 35 years and holds an undergraduate degree in horticulture and a Master’s degree in plant protection and pest management. Whether you’re new to recycling or looking to deepen your commitment to greener habits\, this presentation will offer valuable tips\, resources\, and inspiration to help you take the next step. \nPaulina Jones (she/her) is the environmental planner for Henderson County with a professional background in wildlife and pollinator conservation. Her work as an interdisciplinary environmental scientist has taken her from federal wildlife management to national pollinator protection efforts\, all rooted in using good science—and good data—to help landscapes thrive. But because of their small size and cryptic lifestyles\, it can be hard to see and appreciate what they do. As a research scientist and a media maker\, Dr. Adrian Smith works to visualize\, study\, and tell the stories of these creatures. During this presentation\, he’ll show some of his work filming the behaviors of things like trap-jaws ants\, beetles\, moths\, springtails\, and more. His goal is to illuminate the lives of animals to both advance research science but also create new ways of appreciating our own local biodiversity. \nDr. Adrian Smith is the Head of the Insect Behavior Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University. Drawing on decades of hands-on experience growing food in a wide range of soil types and conditions\, Mike will share practical ways to observe and support the life of the garden right now\, while also exploring how our individual gardens can contribute to the vitality of our communities and the wider world. \nPart discussion and part exploration\, this program encourages gardeners of all experience levels to experiment\, learn from the garden itself\, and discover how their unique approach can help both their garden—and their community—grow. \nMike Odle is a lifelong gardener and land steward with more than two decades of hands-on experience growing food in a wide range of soil types and conditions.
