DESCRIPTION:Date: January 18\, 2025 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Liz Hillard\, Wildlands Network’s senior wildlife biologist for the Appalachian region \nThis presentation will highlight the importance of habitat connectivity in Western North Carolina/the Southern Appalachians\, highlighting local efforts to provide wildlife safe passage across our roadways\, and discuss the challenges (and opportunities) in building back better\, with wildlife in mind\, after Hurricane Helene. \nLiz Hillard is Wildlands Network’s senior wildlife biologist for the Appalachian region and based in Asheville. SUMMARY:Etowah Library Speaker Series: Tracks and Signs of Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Date: January 23\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Etowah Library \nSpeaker: Pam Torlina\, Community Engagement Director for Conserving Carolina \nOften we tend to think that there isn’t much to discover in nature during the dormant months of winter\, but many species of wildlife are still active and on the move\, looking for food and going from place to place. Join us to learn how to see and identify many of the tracks and signs that animals leave behind when we’re not there to see them. \nTorlina\, a biologist\, has been with the Conservancy for 18 years. She has over 25 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator. She has worked with the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation-Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve\, in Haliburton\, Ontario\, Canada\, where she has performed annual migratory and breeding bird surveys\, surveys on nocturnal owls\, hawks and woodpeckers\, presented educational programs on birds for adults and children\, conducted nest searches and nest record data in the U.S. and Canada\, she has volunteered with a licensed bird bander\, and she has participated in data collection for the most recent Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas and is currently a co-coordinator for the North Carolina Bird Atlas\, region 9. \n*Space is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting the Etowah Library’s calendar of events at this link.  \n \nThe Etowah Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Henderson County Public Library. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
