DESCRIPTION:Date: November 2\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. – with optional guided interpretive hike at the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail at Bradley Nature Preserve at 2 p.m. (see below for more information) \nPresentation Location: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: William Caldwell\, the National Park Ranger for the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail \nDid you know that the Blue Ridge Mountains played a role in the American Revolution? Join National Park Ranger William Caldwell to learn about the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail and the story of how frontier settlers from the Blue Ridge Mountains played a key role in the American Revolution and securing our nation’s independence. This lecture is approximately 45 minutes followed by time for questions. Please RSVP below to register for the speaker series presentation. \nWilliam Caldwell is the National Park Ranger for the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail which consists of a 330-mile network of roads and hiking trails following the route used during the American Revolution by Patriot frontiersmen through Virginia\, Tennessee\, North Carolina\, and South Carolina to reach the pivotal 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain. Established as a National Historic Trail in 1980\, Overmountain Victory features a Commemorative Motor Route and growing network of hiking trails allowing visitors to retrace that historic journey. William is the Lead Interpretive Ranger for the trail\, traveling its length to provide stories and interpretation of what happened along the trail in 1780\, what impact it made in the American Revolution\, and how it continues to impact us today. \nOptional guided interpretive walk:\nDate: November 2\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail at Bradley Nature Preserve \nGuide: William Caldwell\, the National Park Ranger for the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail \nA Trail with a Tale: The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail is a network of driving routes and hiking trails that follows the path used in 1780 by Patriot frontiersmen during the American Revolution. Join Ranger William Caldwell\, the National Park Ranger for the trail\, for a guided hike of one of these trails at Alexander’s Ford at Bradley Nature Preserve in Mill Spring\, North Carolina. This hike begins with an approximately 1.25-mile hike to the banks of the Green River\, hearing the story the trail and how that trail was used in 1780. After arriving at the banks of the Green River and a short break\, the trail loops another 1.25-mile back to the trailhead where Ranger William can answer questions and discuss more details about the American Revolution and the Overmountain Victory Trail. Approximate time for the total program is 2 hours. \nSpace is limited to 30 participants and pre-registration is required. This engaging talk offers a comprehensive overview of these remarkable creatures\, exploring their unique life cycle\, habitat preferences\, and the factors contributing to their alarming decline. \nJoin us on a journey through the rivers and streams that serve as the home for these hidden gems. Discover the intricate relationship between freshwater mussels and their environment\, as we explore their vital role in maintaining water quality and stream bed stability. Gain insight into the fascinating reproductive strategies and the complex interactions that shape their existence. \nHowever\, this talk also sheds light on the challenges faced by freshwater mussels. Learn about the various factors that have led to their decline\, including habitat degradation\, pollution\, and changes in river flow patterns. Explore the interconnectedness of these factors and their impact on the delicate balance of freshwater ecosystems. \nBy the end of this talk\, you will develop a deeper appreciation for the significance of freshwater mussels and the urgent need for their conservation. Discover how researchers and conservationists are coming together to protect these imperiled species\, implementing innovative strategies to restore their habitats and raise awareness about their importance. \n  \nHans\, a freshwater mussel enthusiast\, developed a passion for these aquatic creatures during his internship with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) while completing his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He gained invaluable expertise in captive propagation techniques and identifying diverse mussel species across the aquatic habitats of Western North Carolina. \nFurthering his education at Appalachian State University\, Hans earned his master’s degree and conducted his thesis research comparing freshwater mussel taxonomic relationships using a combination of DNA analysis\, geographic range data\, and shell morphology. This academic pursuit deepened his understanding of these fascinating organisms. \nFollowing his academic journey\, Hans dedicated three years to the NCWRC\, focusing on the conservation of freshwater mussels through the preservation of both wild and captive populations. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Green Built Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Green Built Alliance has a 22-year history of advancing sustainable living\, green building and climate justice through inspired action\, community education and collaborative partnerships in Western North Carolina and beyond. Jamie Wine\, Clean Energy Program Manager\, will talk about how the membership-based nonprofit makes sustainability more accessible to the community through its efforts distributing 25\,000 copies of the annual Green Home & Living Guide (formerly known as the Green Building Directory); coordinating the Appalachian Offsets carbon-offsetting program; managing the Blue Horizons Project community campaign to help create our region’s clean energy future; and administering green-building certifications through the Green Built Homes program. You can learn more about Green Built Alliance at greenbuilt.org. \nJamie Wine joined Green Built Alliance in the spring of 2022. He hails most recently from New Orleans where he managed an education and outreach program for energy efficiency and building science across Louisiana. Before that\, in Seattle\, California and Boston\, he developed nonprofit programs for varied audiences like students in grades K-12\, ocean advocates\, traffic engineers\, community organizers\, adults\, families and youth. Jamie is deeply committed to community empowerment through education\, fighting the climate crisis\, and bringing environmental peace to disadvantaged communities. While an executive decision is often easier\, he believes a collaborative approach yields a more satisfying result. Jamie studied marine biology and environmental studies at the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, and holds professional certifications in building performance\, leadership development\, public speaking and real estate. \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co.
