DESCRIPTION:Date: October 5\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Laughing Waters Retreat – in the orchard \nSpeaker: Sara Jackson of Bat Cave Designs \nThis Forest Lifeways discussion explores the myriad lifeforms and lifeways of the forest from a naturalist’s perspective. From fungi to flora to fauna\, we will first take a bird’s eye view of the intricate web of forest life. In the second part\, we will delve into the ways that people have lived with\, stewarded and been part of these very special places from early on\, up to the present day. Shelter\, water\, food\, medicine\, materials\, and deep connection are all ways that humans always have and continue to benefit from one of the greatest strongholds of life on this earth: our incredible forests. \nSara lives among three creeks\, deep in the forest of Bat Cave\, NC. As a student of nature\, she is profoundly grateful to gain and offer her understanding as a naturalist\, educator and photographer. Along with family life in the forest and raising a future steward\, she is a conservationist\, advocate and resource creator who assists nonprofits\, groups and programs in the areas of conservation\, forest farming\, education and more. SUMMARY:Green Drinks: Conserving Carolina’s Trails - Conservation and Recreation
DESCRIPTION:Join Conserving Carolina’s Trails and Land Management Coordinator\, Max Howes\, for an update on Conserving Carolina’s trail systems! Conserving Carolina has built and maintains ~39 miles of trail in the region\, showcasing many acres on\, and scenic views from\, protected land. He will be going over what makes trails sustainable\, why they are important to the region\, what it takes to build and maintain trails\, trail history\, Conserving Carolina’s involvement with the Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail\, and more! There will be an update on current trail projects and opportunities to get involved with trail expansion and maintenance. \nMax was born and raised in North Carolina\, visiting areas across the state while calling Chapel Hill his home until he left for college. He attended Denison University in Ohio where he earned a B.A. in environmental studies with a minor in geoscience. Knowing he wanted to return to North Carolina after graduation\, he served two terms with AmeriCorps Project Conserve as Conserving Carolina’s Habitat Restoration and Volunteer Coordinator. He gained a great appreciation for the diverse flora and fauna as well as the mountain trails in the area. He is now Conserving Carolina’s Trail and Land Management Coordinator. In his free time\, he enjoys swimming\, disc golf\, biking\, and watching college basketball. \n  \n5:30 p.m.: Grab and drink and network with like-minded locals.\n6:00 p.m.: Enjoy the presentation and learn something new!\n  \nHendersonville Green Drinks is presented by Conserving Carolina\, MountainTrue and Trailside Brewing Co. Come to Green Drinks to learn more about current environmental issues\, have relevant discussions\, and meet with like-minded people. This is a monthly event and everyone is welcome. DESCRIPTION:Barred Owl by Sara Jackson \nDate: October 22\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: \nPam Torlina\, Community Engagement Director \nTorlina’s presentation will focus on the several species of owls found in the Carolinas and highlight the special characteristics that make them successful predators of the night. \nDuring the presentation\, participants will get an up-close look at feathers\, talons\, and owl specimens in order to gain a better understanding of their unique characteristics (it is illegal to possess any part of a migratory bird without the proper permitting\, and Conserving Carolina is permitted by the federal government to collect and possess bird specimens to be used for educational purposes). \nTorlina\, a biologist\, has been with the Conservancy for 18 years.  She has over 25 years of experience as a field biologist\, naturalist\, and outdoor educator.  She has worked with the South Carolina State Park Service\, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation-Youth Bureau\, the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation\, and Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve\, in Haliburton\, Ontario\, Canada\, where she has performed annual migratory and breeding bird surveys\, surveys on nocturnal owls\, hawks and woodpeckers\, presented educational programs on birds for adults and children\, conducted nest searches and nest record data in the U.S. and Canada\, participated in data collection for the most recent Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas\, she volunteered with a licensed bird bander in the past\, and she is a co-regional coordinator for the current North Carolina Bird Atlas. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Date: October 28\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Transylvania County Public Library\, Rogow Room \nSpeaker: Sharon Mammoser\, naturalist\, photographer\, and writer \nBats are amazingly diverse\, and incredibly important to a healthy ecosystem. One average size bat can eat up to 1000 mosquito-sized insects in ONE HOUR and save farmers all over the world millions of dollars in pest control. Yet so many people have a negative opinion of this gentle animal. My friend\, and bat biologist and photographer\, Merlin Tuttle has dedicated his life to studying bats and educating people around the world about their value. With the help of some of his incredible photos\, this program will introduce you to the fascinating world of bats. How many bat species are there? How many live in NC? How do they find their prey in pitch darkness? Do they spread rabies and other diseases? Why would you want to welcome bats into your yards? These and many more questions will be answered as we discover the truth about these masters of the night. \nAfter a childhood full of time spent exploring the wild lands around her house in western New York state\, Sharon earned her Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY at New Paltz. For the next 12 years she shared nature with people of all ages in Minnesota\, Michigan\, Rhode Island\, Colorado and New York. After thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail\, she moved to western North Carolina. Through photography\, writing\, and educational programs\, she aims to educate people about their outdoor neighbors and encourage actions that will help the natural world thrive. Sharon states\, “Nature is my church.
