SUMMARY:French Broad River Clean-Up with MountainTrue
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are invited to help clean up trash with Conserving Carolina\, French Broad Paddle Trail Manager\, Jack Henderson\, and other members of MountainTrue’s French Broad Riverkeeper team. \nThe clean-up will be boat-based and focus on the French Broad River in Transylvania County between Island Ford River Access and Morrow Landing. \nMountainTrue can provide canoes (with paddles and PFDs) to volunteers with previous paddling experience\, but attendees are otherwise requested to bring their own boats. MountainTrue will also provide gloves\, trash bags\, a dumpster for trash removal\, and a shuttle to the put-in. \nIf you need to borrow a boat from MountainTrue\, please use the boat request form. (We have a limited number of boats so you must complete this form to borrow a boat).\nALL participants\, regardless of whether you are borrowing a boat or bringing your own\, must sign-up through this “sign-up” link to ensure we can adhere to safety standards for the maximum number of participants. \nPlease bring: \n\nPFD if bringing your own boat.\nAppropriate clothing and footwear for paddling and cleaning up trash (closed-toed shoes recommended).\nDrinking water\, snacks\, lunch.\nChange of clothes for after the event.\n\nKids under the age of 18 are allowed as long as accompanied by a parent/guardian AND are experienced paddlers. \nMeet-up coordinates: Island Ford River Access (GPS Coordinates: 35.17843014706829\, -82.75543437584966) \nTo thank you for your time\, volunteers are eligible to receive a complimentary annual membership to MountainTrue. Please email members@mountaintrue.org to request yours. \nREGISTER HERE. \nThis event has been generously-sponsored by Explore Brevard through the Transylvania County TDA’s Transylvania Always grant program. DESCRIPTION:Date: July 19\, 2025 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Steve O’Neil\, executive director of Earthshine Nature Programs \nJoin us for an up-close and personal introduction to some of the most important and yet most misunderstood wild creatures – the reptiles that live in our backyards – and maybe even in our basements and attics!  This program will focus on many of the more misunderstood animals we share our world with. These animals are integral parts of a healthy ecosystem\, healthy earth\, and healthy humans\, yet they have been misunderstood and mistreated by many for centuries. It’s time to end the misunderstandings and build some respect for our wild friends. \n\nThis program will include LIVE ANIMALS and will be perfect for all ages!  So\, come out and bring the kids\, to meet Steve and his friends and learn some amazing secrets of our less than cuddly wild neighbors.\n\n\n\nSteve is from Hendersonville\, North Carolina and has worked as an interpretive naturalist for many years and with many organizations. He is the Executive Director of Earthshine Nature Programs. He received is Associate of Applied Science in Wildlife & Fisheries Management from Haywood Community College and his Bachelor of Science in Recreation Mgt./Outdoor Experiential Education from Appalachian State University\, and he loves to share his passion for forests\, mountains\, caves\, swamps\, and dunes – in search of all things and all places wild and wonderful – with youngsters and adults. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
