DESCRIPTION:Native Plant Garden Volunteer Team! \nDo you have an interest in native plants?  Join us Thursdays from 9am –  12pm at Ironwood Square\, 847 Case Street in Hendersonville\, home of the Conserving Carolina office.  Over two acres has been planted with an amazing collection of native flowers\, shrubs\, trees\, and bog plants.  Volunteers are needed to maintain the extensive garden for community use and educational programming. \nNo experience needed\, but please bring gloves and gardening tools! \nPlease note that hours will change seasonally.  Starting May 1st we will work from 9am- 11 pm every Thursday.  As the weather gets cooler we’ll work from 1:00 – 3:00pm every other week.  The website calendar will reflect these changes. \nFor more information or to sign up contact mary@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Pleasant Grove Preserve Bradford Pear Removal & Treatment
DESCRIPTION:In the Summer of 2023 Conserving Carolina completed a large floodplain and stream restoration project along the French Broad River at the Pleasant Grove Preserve. The project restored an eroded stream (Little Willow Creek)\, stabilized banks along the French Broad River\, and created floodplain\, wetland\, and pollinator habitat. In order to protect the newly created habitats\, maintenance and management activities need to occur regularly. \nWe will be protecting the floodplain and wetland habitats by focusing on the removal of Bradford Pear\, a non-native invasive plant species. We will remove these trees and saplings via the “cut & dab” method: cutting the trees at their base and applying a small amount of herbicide to the cut surface. This work is critical to maintain the high-quality habitat created during the restoration. We will be hiking a short distance across moderate terrain. Tools and gloves will be provided\, but personal cutting tools such as handsaws\, Sawzalls\, and small chainsaws are welcome. Plant ID and removal techniques will be taught on-site. You will get dirty\, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing. Light clothing is recommended in the floodplain\, along with hats\, sunscreen\, insect repellent\, work shoes or boots\, and sunglasses. There is a wooden fence line and a large metal gate covered in black fabric that will be unlocked and open. Please park and meet in the gravel lot just inside the gate.
