SUMMARY:Tracking Our Tributaries: Exploring Mud Creek along the Oklawaha Greenway
DESCRIPTION:You’re Invited on a Walk-n-Talk Along the Greenway \nOn Tuesday\, June 10th\, at 9:00am join Mike Huffman\, the City of Hendersonville’s Stormwater and Floodplain Administrator\, for a walk entitled Tracking Our Tributaries: Exploring Mud Creek along the Oklawaha Greenway. Participants will meet at the round gazebo at Patton Park.The early start time of 9:00am was set to avoid the summer heat. It happens rain or shine\, and will last an hour and a half. \nHuffman will talk about\, and point out as he walks\, where the major floodwaters came from during Hurricane Helene. He will explain where the water goes when it rains\, and answer questions about his work in stormwater and floodwater management. \nJoin the Friends of the Oklawaha Greenway on this walk to learn about your ecological address. Most likely\, you live in the Mud Creek Watershed\, a 113 square mile area located within central Henderson County and encompassing the municipalities of Hendersonville\, Laurel Park\, and Flat Rock. It consists of five sub-watersheds: Upper Mud Creek\, Lower Mud Creek\, Bat Fork\, Devil’s Fork\, and Clear Creek.

DESCRIPTION:Date: June 10\, 2025 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeakers: Olivia Hall\, Communications and Educational Outreach Manager\, and Ayla Busch\, AmeriCorps Project Conserve member serving as Stewardship and Conservation Education Associate\, with Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) \nDiscover hemlocks’ foundational ecological role\, learn about the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid and the challenges it presents\, and explore the latest management practices to restore hemlock health. Whether you’re a landowner or an environmental enthusiast\, you’ll learn about what you can do to preserve hemlocks on your property and beyond. \nOlivia Hall is the Communications and Educational Outreach Manager for HRI. She graduated with her Masters in Biology in May of 2023 from Northern Michigan University and moved to the Asheville area in July of the same year. Being from the north country\, she holds a particular affinity for conifers\, and she loves the ecological value and beauty they hold. \nAyla Busch is an AmeriCorps Project Conserve member serving as Stewardship and Conservation Education Associate with Hemlock Restoration Initiative. She grew up in upstate New York\, and attended University of North Carolina Wilmington\, where she learned that she loved connecting with new people through environmental outreach. SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Butterflies in Your Backyard

Photo by Kim Bailey \nDate: June 10\, 2025 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nSpeaker: Brad Nelson \nThis program will be great for all ages\, and it will introduce basic information about butterflies and some of the species common in our area\, with a focus on the Monarch butterfly. Keeping it fun and entertaining\, Brad will discuss the Monarchs life cycle\, different types of milkweeds common in our area\, and which milkweeds are more likely to attract Monarchs. He will also provide gardening techniques that will help attract Monarchs\, describing specific types of plants that are best for enticing them and which are better to help perpetuate the species. The presentation will also include an explanation of migration routes and when to expect Monarchs in this area. This is sure to be a great program for the whole family\, so bring the kids! \nBrad has been involved with Monarch Watch\, the University of Kansas tagging program\, for the last 5 years.
