SUMMARY:Guided Bird Walk at Pleasant Grove
DESCRIPTION:Date: March 22\, 2025 \nTime: 9:00 a.m. \nLocation: Pleasant Grove \nGuide: Mike Resch \nJoin Conserving Carolina for a free\, guided bird walk at one of our newest French Broad River restoration sites\, Pleasant Grove! This walk will be led by Mike Resch\, an experienced\, professional\, and expert birder. Mike will lead participants on an easy walk through the preserve\, where we’ll be looking and listening for sparrows\, blackbirds\, and other late wintering species. Mike will also share tips about how to identify these birds in the field. \nMike has been a birder since getting his first pair of binoculars at 8 years of age. Since then\, he’s birded throughout the US and Canada\, birding extensively in all 50 states and 10 provinces.  Mike’s state birding passion is chronicled in his blog – www.statebirding.blogspot.com. He formerly lived in New England where he was the Chair of the New Hampshire Rare Birds Committee. His technical specialty as an environmental engineer is in cleaning up hazardous waste sites. Since retiring to Hendersonville\, NC\, Mike has enjoyed birding the many excellent birding spots in the NC mountains and the upstate of SC. He is a co-coordinator for the western NC region of the North Carolina Bird Atlas and a guide for Ventures Birding Tours. Mike/Ventures Birding Tours has graciously donated their time to lead this walk. \nFor your safety\, do not attempt this activity if it is beyond your ability and experience. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a snack\, water\, and any personal medication that may be required. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Writing in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Come join Dr. Mattie Decker for her special offering of “Spring Equinox Writing in Nature.” Writing in Nature includes an experience of Shinrin Yoku\, known as “Forest Bathing” with Mattie Decker\, ANFT certified guide and mindfulness teacher. We gather in a circle\, with mindfulness meditation before embarking into the forest to “find our spot”\, our tree\, or place we are drawn to sit and write. Afterward there are refreshments shared\, as we tell about our experiences\, often reading what we’ve written. Participants are also encouraged to bring writing they are working on\, or journals to continue projects they are midst. There are always surprises\, and amazement in how the medicine of the forest provides us what is uniquely needed for each of us. For new writers\, or those who are writers\, this experience offers a dimension of awakening to the deep relationship we each have in Nature. \n  \n**Participants will meet up at the back parking lot of the Lake Lure Inn in Lake Lure and will caravan together to the event location on a privately conserved property adjoining Chimney Rock State Park. SUMMARY:Walnut Creek Preserve Speaker Series: Lessons from the Field\, with Sci NC Executive Producer and Host\, Frank Graff!
DESCRIPTION:Date: March 22\, 2025 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Frank Graff\, Sci NC Executive Producer and Host \nJoin Frank Graff to hear about the lessons he has learned from a decade of science and environmental reporting\, as well as what he has learned from covering the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Frank will provide evidence and explain that science is real\, it effects all of us\, and it’s okay to question science. Frank will also speak about Hurricane Helene and this new period of climate change charged weather and provide some new advice about being prepared. \nFrank Graff has spent his career telling stories on television\, explaining complex topics and showing viewers things they’ve never seen. Frank started his new career in Northern Maine and has worked in local television newsrooms in markets including Cincinnati\, Baltimore\, Norfolk and Raleigh\, and has reported for network news operations. But he’s always been fascinated by stories related to science. The Ohio native got the opportunity to put that passion into practice when he joined PBS North Carolina and helped launch Sci NC. \nFrank and the science team use their storytelling skills to bring science out of the labs at the state’s universities\, government agencies and industries to show how the research and discoveries impact our daily lives. They hope their stories help to create good science citizens and inspire the next generation of scientists. \nFrank is a graduate of Ohio University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in political science.
