SUMMARY:Forest Bathing: Writing in Nature
DESCRIPTION:Mattie is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. She is also a Zen practitioner\, an Episcopal oblate\, and a retired education professor\, and she is certified in wilderness first aid. This event is one of our monthly forest bathing walks. Forest bathing is a practice from Japan that has been gaining attention in the West. Forest bathing is not about getting exercise. It’s not about hiking to get somewhere. It’s about being present in the forest\, taking it in. It’s about creating relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \nMany have asked if Mattie would consider “Writing in Nature”! So\, here it is! \n“This event begins a new series I’ll be offering for those who would like to begin a Nature Journal\, or simply write from their experiences in relationship with nature. DESCRIPTION:American_Beaver_by By Steve from washington\, dc\, usa\, CC BY-SA 2.0 \n  \nDate: August 17\, 2024 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. \nLocation: Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve \nSpeaker: Colleen Olfenbuttel\, Black Bear & Furbearer Biologist\, NC Wildlife Resources Commission \nColleen will discuss the important role\, both historically and currently\, of beavers in North American and North Carolina\, as well as fascinating beaver biology basics\, and how North Carolina currently manages beavers. \nColleen Olfenbuttel has worked in the wildlife profession for over 25 years and has co-authored over 35 peer-reviewed scientific publications. She was the Black Bear and Furbearer Biologist for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission from 2007 to 2024 and was responsible for managing and conserving black bears and 17 furbearer species. She is now the Game Mammals and Surveys Supervisor. Colleen is a past-president of the North Carolina Chapter of The Wildlife Society (TWS) and is chair of TWS Wildlife Damage Management Working Group.
