SUMMARY:Saluda Library Speaker Series: The Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas: Tracking and Conserving our Native Bumble Bees with Community Science
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: The Xerces Society / Katie Lamke \nDate: August 13\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 p.m. \nLocation: Polk County Public Libraries\, Saluda Branch \nSpeaker: Dr. Laurie Hamon\, Conservation Biologist for The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation \nBumble bees are familiar and charismatic visitors to our gardens. However\, nearly half of southeastern bumble bee species are at risk of extinction. To protect our bees\, conservationists need more information about our rare bumble bees and their habitat requirements. The Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas is a community science project that aims to track and understand southeastern bumble bees. This presentation will cover the background of the Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas\, our findings so far\, and how you can get involved. The Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas is led by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation in collaboration with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Division\, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources\, and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. \nLaurie Hamon is an Endangered Species Conservation Biologist with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and the lead coordinator for the Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas. Laurie earned a PhD in Biology and Entomology from North Carolina State University with a thesis on the pollination biology of Venus flytraps. SUMMARY:Presentation of Saluda Grade Trail Study (SC)
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the Saluda Grade Trail! The Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy will present the results of a year-long engineering and economic impact study to the public in two meetings\, one in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. \nThese presentations will address: \n\nFindings from public input – community goals and concerns\nRail to trail development process\nExisting condition of the trail corridor and bridges\nTrail design and safety recommendations from the engineering team\nProjected regional economic impacts\n\n\n\nConserving Carolina is one of three nonprofit partners spearheading the Saluda Grade Trail\, along with Upstate Forever and PAL: Play\, Advocate\, Live Well. Together\, these three nonprofits partners formed the Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy to advance the trail project. \n\n\nThe first meeting will take place on Aug. 6 at 6:00 at Polk County High School. The second meeting will take place Aug. 13 at 6:00 at Gramling United Methodist Church.
