SUMMARY:Kudzu Warriors
DESCRIPTION:Join the Conserving Carolina “Kudzu Warriors” as they continue the fight against Kudzu\, a non-native and invasive vine\, at the Conserving Carolina owned Norman Wilder Forest off of Hwy 176. \nThe Kudzu Warriors\, named for their hard work eradicating Kudzu on Little Warrior Mountain\, have been defending the Conserving Carolina nature preserve from Kudzu (and other exotic species) since 2011 and have made a tremendous impact on the property. Areas that were once a mat of Kudzu vines are now lush with native vegetation! But the fight is not over\, and we need your help! \nJoin us Monday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Norman Wilder Forest parking area/trailhead off of Hwy 176\, between Tryon and Saluda. GPS points (35.22458\, -82.27428) \nWe will supply tools and gloves\, but please bring water and a snack for yourself\, dress appropriately and bring your own work gloves if you’d like. \nTo RSVP or for more information email pam@conservingcarolina.org.

SUMMARY:Common Milkweed Rescue!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a native plant rescue! \n  \nA garden of Common Milkweed at a private residence in Pisgah Forest is in need of rescue and relocation! Join us to help dig up these important pollinator plants and a larval host plant of the Monarch butterfly! \nParticipants are welcome to take rhizomes/plants home to plant or they can help pot them up to be used in native pollinator gardens and restoration sites in the region. \n  \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be digging and potting up Common Milkweed rhizomes. \nVolunteers must be able to walk a short distances over relatively level terrain. Please bring a digging tool (shovel preferred) and gloves. Pots will be provided but if you have some at home\, please bring them! You will get dirty\, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing. \nWhat to Bring:\n• Water and snacks\n• Work Gloves\n• Change of Clothes for Drive Home (recommended) \nWhat to Wear:\n• Closed toed shoes that can navigate off-trail terrain and can get dirty\n• Work pants or shorts; dress for the weather \nFor questions or more information\, contact Pam Torlina at pam@conservingcarolina.org. \nPlease RSVP below.

DESCRIPTION:Date: August 12\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Transylvania County Public Library\, Rogow Room \nSpeaker: Steve O’Neil\, Executive Director of Earthshine Nature Programs \nJoin us for an up-close and personal introduction to some of the most important and yet most misunderstood wild creatures – the reptiles that live in our backyards – and maybe even in our basements and attics!  This program will focus on many of the more misunderstood animals we share our world with. These animals are integral parts of a healthy ecosystem\, healthy earth\, and healthy humans\, yet they have been misunderstood and mistreated by many for centuries. It’s time to end the misunderstandings and build some respect for our wild friends. \n\nThis program will include LIVE ANIMALS and will be perfect for all ages!  So\, come out and bring the kids\, to meet Steve and his friends and learn some amazing secrets of our less than cuddly wild neighbors.\n\n\n\nSteve is from Hendersonville\, North Carolina and has worked as an interpretive naturalist for many years and with many organizations. He is the Executive Director of Earthshine Nature Programs. He received is Associate of Applied Science in Wildlife & Fisheries Management from Haywood Community College and his Bachelor of Science in Recreation Mgt./Outdoor Experiential Education from Appalachian State University\, and he loves to share his passion for forests\, mountains\, caves\, swamps\, and dunes – in search of all things and all places wild and wonderful – with youngsters and adults. \n \nThe Brevard Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the NC Cooperative Extension\, Transylvania County Center. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
