SUMMARY:Common Milkweed Rescue!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a native plant rescue! \n  \nA garden of Common Milkweed at a private residence in Pisgah Forest is in need of rescue and relocation! Join us to help dig up these important pollinator plants and a larval host plant of the Monarch butterfly! \nParticipants are welcome to take rhizomes/plants home to plant or they can help pot them up to be used in native pollinator gardens and restoration sites in the region. \n  \nWorkday Description:\nVolunteers will be digging and potting up Common Milkweed rhizomes. \nVolunteers must be able to walk a short distances over relatively level terrain. Please bring a digging tool (shovel preferred) and gloves. Pots will be provided but if you have some at home\, please bring them! You will get dirty\, so make sure to wear appropriate clothing. \nWhat to Bring:\n• Water and snacks\n• Work Gloves\n• Change of Clothes for Drive Home (recommended) \nWhat to Wear:\n• Closed toed shoes that can navigate off-trail terrain and can get dirty\n• Work pants or shorts; dress for the weather \nFor questions or more information\, contact Pam Torlina at pam@conservingcarolina.org. \nPlease RSVP below.

SUMMARY:Presentation of Saluda Grade Trail Study (NC)
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the Saluda Grade Trail! The Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy will present the results of a year-long engineering and economic impact study to the public in two meetings\, one in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. \nThese presentations will address: \n\nFindings from public input – community goals and concerns\nRail to trail development process\nExisting condition of the trail corridor and bridges\nTrail design and safety recommendations from the engineering team\nProjected regional economic impacts\n\n\n\nConserving Carolina is one of three nonprofit partners spearheading the Saluda Grade Trail\, along with Upstate Forever and PAL: Play\, Advocate\, Live Well. Together\, these three nonprofits partners formed the Saluda Grade Trail Conservancy to advance the trail project. \n\n\nThe first meeting will take place on Aug. 6 at 6:00 at Polk County High School. The second meeting will take place Aug. 13 at 6:00 at Gramling United Methodist Church.

SUMMARY:Landrum Library Speaker Series: Water Quality in Streams and Rivers of Upstate South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Date: August 6\, 2024 \nTime: 6:00 p.m. \nLocation: Landrum Library \nSpeakers: Dr. Greg Lewis\, professor of biology at Furman University \nThe Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces of South Carolina are experiencing some of the fastest urban growth in the country.  Therefore\, it’s important to understand how the transformation of rural lands to urban and suburban lands affects water quality and other conditions in streams and rivers\, which are often used as public water supplies\, receivers of treated wastewater\, and for recreational opportunities. This presentation will provide a summary of over 20 years of research by faculty and students at Furman University on how both natural variations in the landscape and human activity influence water quality in streams and rivers in this region. \nGreg is a Professor and the Chair of the Biology Department at Furman University.  He has been on the faculty at the University since 2000.  Since childhood\, he has been fascinated by freshwater ecosystems and has spent most of his professional career studying them.  As a PhD student at Cornell University\, he studied small streams in the Allegheny National Forest of northwestern Pennsylvania.  As a postdoctoral research fellow at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory near Aiken\, South Carolina\, he studied small artificial lakes. For the past 23 years at Furman\, he has collaborated with other Biology faculty and faculty in the Department of Earth\, Environmental\, and Sustainability Sciences on interdisciplinary studies of streams\, rivers\, ponds\, and wetlands across the South Carolina Piedmont and Blue Ridge Escarpment.  His research has focused on how a variety of human activities (including release of wastewater treatment effluent\, urbanization\, and agriculture) influence water quality in streams and rivers. \n \nThe Landrum Library Speaker Series programs are made possible thanks to our partnership with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. \nContact Pam Torlina\, pam@conservingcarolina.org\, with questions or for more information.
